SANDAKAN: Close cooperation between the people and the security forces is the key to ensuring the continued safety and sovereignty of the nation, said District Municipal Council (MPS) President Walter Kenson. He said the responsibility of protecting national peace cannot rest solely on the shoulders of the security forces, but instead requires the full support of all levels of society. 'The most effective way to safeguard national security is through close collaboration between the public and security personnel. 'We must foster a spirit of tolerance and strengthen unity and harmony within the community,' he said. Walter was speaking at the Sandakan District-level Warriors' Day celebration held at the Dewan Masyarakat on Thursday. The event was also attended by local leaders, members of the security forces and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in appreciation of the sacrifices made by the nation's heroes. Walter said Warriors' Day should continue to be celebrated annually as a way to send a clear message and educate the younger generation on the importance of defending the country's sovereignty. Touching on security concerns in the area, he highlighted Sandakan's proximity to neighbouring borders, noting the need for close cooperation between district administrators and security forces, especially in sharing relevant information. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? BN eyes representation in all 25 Sabah MP seats

Published on: Sunday, August 03, 2025 Published on: Sun, Aug 03, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan MEMBAKUT: Barisan Nasional (BN) intends to contest at least one state seat in each parliamentary constituency in Sabah during the 17th state election, said its Deputy Chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. The Umno deputy president said the move is to ensure BN is represented in all 25 parliamentary constituencies in Sabah, which has a total of 73 state seats. However, Mohamad, who is also Foreign Minister and Rembau MP, said the proposal has not been finalised and will be discussed further with the BN component parties, namely Umno, MCA, MIC and Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS). 'We do not want to see a recurrence of the situation in the last election, when some parliamentary constituencies lacked BN representation. 'This will lead to frustration and disillusionment among supporters, possibly causing them to leave the party,' he told reporters after launching the Kimanis Umno Division delegates meeting at Dewan Terbuka Membakut, here, Saturday. The current five-year term of the 16th State Assembly will expire automatically on Nov 11, paving the way for the 17th State Election. Meanwhile, Mohamad urged the people, particularly Umno members, not to be influenced by malicious allegations that the party had formed a coalition with DAP. 'BN, particularly Umno, has never merged with any party after the 15th General Election (GE15). Instead, BN only formed the current government with Pakatan Harapan (PH) based on an agreement with the coalition. 'Umno and BN agreed to form the Government because we needed to manage the country, as no party was able to form a government after GE15,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Stop making negative comments: IGP

Published on: Sunday, August 03, 2025 Published on: Sun, Aug 03, 2025 Text Size: Regarding the bullying case involving the death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir from Sipitang on July 17, Mohd Khalid said 60 witnesses comprising students, staff and teachers have been interviewed. KOTA KINABALU: Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail urged the public to stop making negative comments about the student bullying case in Papar that could cause unrest and touch on sensitive racial, religious and royalty (3R) issues. Speaking to the media after visiting Governor Tun Musa Aman, Mohd Khalid pointed out the need to give police adequate space to complete their investigation thoroughly. 'I appeal to all parties to allow police to continue their investigation. Negative comments and public perceptions linking this to 3R issues sometimes make it difficult for us to complete investigations. 'I urge related parties not to make negative comments that could create an unhealthy atmosphere or unrest by associating certain parties, politics, or the palace with this issue,' he said. Regarding the bullying case involving the death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir from Sipitang on July 17, Mohd Khalid said 60 witnesses comprising students, staff and teachers have been interviewed. 'We have obtained substantial information and evidence. The investigation papers have been completed and submitted to the Criminal Investigation Department at Bukit Aman headquarters and will be brought to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for further action,' he said. The IGP said his visit to the Governor was aimed at discussing security and stability issues in Sabah, including domestic matters and international concerns involving territorial waters with the Philippines and claims by China. 'We are in a win-win situation, discussing matters properly to ensure everything can be resolved well,' he added. Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun accompanied him during the visit. This is Mohd Khalid's first official visit to Sabah since his appointment as IGP on June 23. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Fire near Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant contained: Russia

A fire that broke out near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant after Ukrainian shelling has been brought under control, the Russian-installed administration of the Russia-held plant in Ukraine said on Saturday. Russian forces seized the Zaporizhzhia plant in the first weeks of Russia's February 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Both sides have accused each other of firing or taking other actions that could trigger a nuclear accident. The plant's administration said on Telegram that a civilian had been killed in the shelling, but that no plant employees or members of the emergency services had been injured. Reuters could not independently verify the Russian report. The station, Europe's biggest nuclear power plant, is not operating but still requires power to keep its nuclear fuel cool. The plant's Russia-installed management said radiation levels remained within normal levels and the situation was under control. - Reuters
