Will hurricane season start early this year? Recent trends suggest yes
In recent days, some forecasting models have hinted at the possibility of a head start to the 2025 season, showing the potential for storm development—specifically in the western Caribbean where conditions appear more favorable.
In seven of the last 10 years, at least one named storm has formed before June 1. For comparison, there were only three years with early named storms from 2005 to 2014.
After six years of storms forming early, the National Hurricane Center decided in 2021 to start issuing tropical weather outlooks beginning May 15—two weeks earlier than previously done.
Some years have even seen multiple prior to the season's start. There were two ahead-of-schedule named storms in 2012, 2016 and 2020 – and 2020 nearly had three, with Tropical Storm Cristobal forming on June 1.
When a hurricane season starts early, it doesn't necessarily mean there will be more storms.
But there could be cause for concern this year, as the season's poised to be a busy one, with an above-average 17 named storms predicted, according to hurricane researchers at Colorado State University.
Early activity has largely been thanks to unusually warm waters in the Atlantic, Caribbean or Gulf basins during the spring. It's a trend meteorologists and climate scientists have been watching for years.
As our climate continues to warm, so do the oceans, which absorb 90% of the world's surplus heat. That can have a ripple effect on tropical systems around the globe.
Warm water acts as fuel for hurricanes, providing heat and moisture that rises into the storm, strengthening it.

The hotter the water, the more energy available to power the hurricane's growth. And a warmer atmosphere can hold more moisture, which in turn means more fuel for the tropical systems to pull from.
Sea surface temperatures are already incredibly warm for this time of year, especially in the Gulf and southern Caribbean. This means any system passing through those regions could take advantage if other atmospheric conditions are favorable and develop into an early named storm.
In the Caribbean, water temperatures are among some of the warmest on record for early May, and more in line with temperatures found in late June and July.

The Eastern Pacific hurricane season has also seen some preseason activity in recent years, though not as frequent as the Atlantic.
Part of the reason is because the Eastern Pacific season begins two weeks earlier, on May 15. In the last 20 years, the Eastern Pacific basin has only had three named tropical systems prior to that date—Andreas in 2021, Adrian in 2017 and Aletta in 2012.
Another reason is the relationship between the two basins and storm formation. Generally, when the Atlantic basin is more active, the Pacific is less so due to a number of factors, including El Niño and La Niña.

Tropical Storm Chantal weakens to a depression as it moves across Carolinas
Tropical Storm Chantal weakened into a depression after sweeping inland across South Carolina into eastern North Carolina on Sunday, July 6, though the system still brought a threat of flash flooding and dangerous rip currents. Chantal, the third tropical storm of the 2025 Atlantic season, made landfall near Litchfield Beach, South Carolina, at about 4 a.m. local time. By midmorning, the system's sustained winds had decreased to near 35 mph with higher gusts, according to the National Hurricane Center. While the storm is expected to continue weakening, it was still likely "to produce heavy rainfall across portions of northeastern South Carolina today and across portions of North Carolina through Monday," the center said. Total rainfall of 2 to 4 inches, and local amounts up to 6 inches, were expected. "The combination of storm surge and tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters moving inland from the shoreline," the center warned. Meanwhile, from the Carolinas to Florida coast, Chantal was expected to produce "life-threatening surf and rip currents" into next week, the hurricane center said. The depression was moving toward the north near 9 mph and was expected to move over eastern North Carolina into the night, the hurricane center said. The circulation of Chantal could lead to dangers far from the storm's track in areas from Savannah, Georgia, to Jacksonville, Florida, such as rough surf and treacherous rip currents, according to Accuweather. The storm's most intense winds should remain offshore, but risks remain, forecasters said. "The strongest winds are expected near and to the east of where the storm makes landfall and can produce tree damage, localized power outages and some structural damage," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Tyler Roy said. The Atlantic hurricane season officially began on June 1 and will last through the end of November. Active hurricane weather typically peaks between mid-August and mid-October. Chantal, which intensified into a tropical storm Saturday, followed two earlier tropicals storms in June: Andrea, which was the first named storm of the 2025 season, and the short-lived Barry. Hurricanes are born in the tropics, above warm water. Clusters of thunderstorms can develop over the ocean when water temperatures exceed 80 degrees Fahrenheit. If conditions are right, the clusters swirl into a storm known as a tropical wave or tropical depression. A tropical depression becomes a named tropical storm once its sustained wind speeds reaches 39 mph. When its winds reach 74 mph, the storm officially becomes a hurricane. Prepare now for hurricanes: Here's what you should do to stay safe before a storm arrives Delaying potentially life-saving preparations could mean waiting until it's too late. "Get your disaster supplies while the shelves are still stocked, and get that insurance checkup early, as flood insurance requires a 30-day waiting period," NOAA recommends. Develop an evacuation plan: If you are at risk from hurricanes, you need an evacuation plan. Now is the time to begin planning where you would go and how you would get there. Assemble disaster supplies: Whether you're evacuating or sheltering-in-place, you're going to need supplies not just to get through the storm but for the potentially lengthy aftermath, NOAA said. Get an insurance checkup and document your possessions: Contact your insurance company or agent now and ask for an insurance check-up to make sure you have enough insurance to repair or even replace your home and/or belongings. Remember, home and renters insurance doesn't cover flooding, so you'll need a separate policy for it. Flood insurance is available through your company, agent, or the National Flood Insurance Program. Act now, as flood insurance requires a 30-day waiting period. Create a family communication plan: NOAA said to take the time now to write down your hurricane plan, and share it with your family. Determine family meeting places, and make sure to include an out-of-town location in case of evacuation. Top experts from Colorado State University released an updated forecast for the Atlantic hurricane season on July 9, and there is a morsel of good news: "We have decreased our forecast slightly," said meteorologist Phil Klotzbach about the updated prediction. Instead of nine hurricanes forming in the Atlantic basin in 2025, the new forecast calls for 8. An average season sees seven. "The primary reason for the slight decrease in the outlook is both observed and predicted high levels of Caribbean shear," the forecast said. In this context, forecasters are referring to wind shear, upper-level winds that act to tear developing storms apart. "High levels of Caribbean shear in June/July are typically associated with less active hurricane seasons," the forecast said. But don't let your guard down: Overall, the team still says a total of 16 named tropical storms will form in 2025 (this includes the three that have already formed: Andrea, Barry and Chantal). Additionally, forecasters wrote, "we anticipate a slightly above-average probability for major hurricanes making landfall along the continental United States coastline." The forecast includes a state-by-state look at hurricane risk. Those calculations predict the chances of a storm passing within 50 miles of the state. Per usual, the highest risk is in Florida, which faces a 90% chance of being impacted by a tropical storm and a 62% chance of being impacted by a hurricane. Will tropical storm form in Gulf next week? See latest forecast from AccuWeather, NOAA
The tropics are quiet right now, with no activity expected over the next seven days, according to the National Hurricane Center. But AccuWeather forecasters are keeping an eye on an area close to Florida and the United States which shows some potential for tropical development next week. Elsewhere, the National Hurricane Center is tracking four tropical waves. The next named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season will be Dexter. Today's weather forecast across Florida calls for showers and thunderstorms across several portions of the state, temperatures in the 90s and heat indices hitting as high as 107. Here's the latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center as of 8 a.m., July 10: The National Hurricane Center is keeping an eye on four tropical waves in the Atlantic basin: Tropical wave 1: A tropical wave is analyzed near 21W from 04N-19N, moving west at around 11 mph. Scattered moderate convection is active from 07N-13N between the coast of Africa and 25W. Tropical wave 2: A tropical wave is analyzed near 38W, from 05N-18N, moving west at around 17 to 23 mph. Scattered showers are noted along the wave axis. Tropical wave 3: A tropical wave is analyzed near 66W from 20N to northern Venezuela, moving west at around 1a mph. No significant convection is noted with this wave. Tropical wave 4: A tropical wave is analyzed near 82W from 07-22N, and is moving west at around 11 mph. Scattered moderate convection is seen in the far southwestern Caribbean, and also from 14-17N between 80-85W. "There's a lot of African dust, which is common this time of the year. June and July typically have the most African dust coming across the Atlantic Basin, and this year is no different." There is a low risk of a tropical depression or tropical storm forming from July 15-18, according to AccuWeather. "It's in the northeastern Gulf and off the southeast coast, a very similar area to where we outlooked Chantal," DaSilva said. ➤ CSU predicting slightly fewer storms this hurricane season. Florida shouldn't ignore tropics "I think it's a similar setup, but not the exact same thing. We are going to have a cold front coming down in that area and you can get a little bit of spin on the end of it. It looks like there could be a little more wind shear with this setup, potentially, and that could prevent development. "Either way, it looks like over the entirety of the Atlantic Basin, if anything is going to develop here over the next couple of weeks, it's likely to be really close to home. It's likely to be that what we call homegrown tropical development in the northeastern Gulf or off the Southeast coast," DaSilva said. "Much like Chantal, if something develops, it's unlikely that it would become a hurricane. I don't think it would have enough time to develop, and also it's got to deal with some of that wind shear. If anything develops, it would likely be a tropical depression or tropical storm, and that's if anything develops at all." Historically, July tropical systems develop close to the United States, in the Gulf, Caribbean and in the southwestern Atlantic. Later in the season, they form out of tropical waves moving off the coast of Africa. If development of the system occurs in the Atlantic east of Florida, "it may once again drift northward toward the U.S. coast," AccuWeather said. "Should development occur on the Gulf side of Florida, which is looking more plausible at this time, steering breezes could guide the area of interest westward along the northern Gulf coast. "In either case, showers and thunderstorms can increase in coastal areas and adjacent waters offshore even if a storm center fails to form. Should a center form, more substantial rain and wind, with building surf, would unfold," AccuWeather said. An average Atlantic hurricane season has 14 named storms, seven hurricanes, and three major hurricanes.
