New West Bengal BJP chief seeks Left supporters' help to oust Trinamool from power
The newly elected president of the Bharatiya Janata Party's West Bengal unit, Samik Bhattacharya, on Thursday (July 3, 2025) called for the defeat of the Trinamool Congress in next year's State Assembly election, seeking Left supporters' aid in removing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee from power. In his first address after taking over the post from Sukanta Majumdar, Mr. Bhattacharya, 62, urged Opposition political parties in the State to keep their individual flags aside for the time being. 'Leave all ideologies aside and come together to remove Trinamool from power. Then you can raise your flag and find your own path again. There will be a space for Opposition,' the State BJP chief said. However, the Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, who was speaking at the same event, urged the people of the State to be careful of the Left parties. 'They call themselves secular, bring out Muslims in their rallies and divide Hindu votes. In the last Lok Sabha polls, the BJP lost 12 seats in the State because of them,' Mr. Adhikari said. Over 10% votes with Left, Congress Though the BJP has emerged as the main Opposition party in West Bengal, it trails behind the ruling Trinamool Congress by a vote share margin of 10%. The Left Front, led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist), and the Congress do not have any seats in the West Bengal Assembly, but together, these parties garnered a vote share of over 10% in the last election. Mr. Bhattacharya said that the people of West Bengal have come to realise that the BJP can remove the Trinamool Congress from power, and that the slogan of 'SonarBengal (Golden Bengal)' can become a reality by bringing investment to the State. 'No power can ensure that Mamata Banerjee will return to power in the State for the fourth time in 2026,' Mr. Bhattacharya said. Tracing the history of the BJP in West Bengal — from the days when it was an 'irrelevant' political force with a vote share of less than 1% — the BJP leader said that the party has now become the main Opposition party in the State on its own strength. 'Muslims are killing Muslims' The newly elected BJP president also reached out to minority communities in the State, saying, 'The BJP's fight is not against minorities. We are not against Muslims... We want to provide them with books in their hands instead of tools for migrant workers.' Mr. Bhattacharya accused Ms. Banerjee's government of precipitating a communal divide in the State. In the political violence occurring under the Trinamool Congress regime, 'Muslims are being killed by Muslims', he said. Uniting BJP veterans, newcomers The outgoing BJP president of West Bengal Sukanta Majumdar, was also present at the event, where he and Mr. Adhikari vowed to work with Mr. Bhattacharya. The new BJP president also tried to bring together veterans and new entrants in the party. 'The old-timers in the party must remember that without newcomers, the party can't grow. We can't order people from Kumartuli to create cadres for us. At the same time, the newcomers must never forget that the old guard held the flag high even when defeat was inevitable,' Mr. Bhattacharya said.

‘Cong will never come to power, let them daydream…': Nitesh Rane's fiery response to Priyank Kharge's ‘ban RSS' remark
Maharashtra Minister Nitesh Rane on Thursday slammed Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge over his recent statement to ban the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), stating that Congress is never going to come to power. 'Congress is never going to come into power, let them daydream,' Rane said. Congress leader Priyank Kharge on Tuesday slammed the RSS over their General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale's statement demanding reconsideration of the terms 'socialist' and 'secular' in the Preamble of the Indian Constitution. Alleging that the RSS wants to "alter" the Indian Constitution, Kharge said that these are the same people who "staged a protest when the constituent assembly debates were going on and burned the Constitution". On being asked if Congress is thinking of banning the RSS, Kharge said, 'We will see. It's not the first time they have been banned, right? Didn't Sardar Patel ban them? Then they went and fell at his feet. They pleaded no, no, we will follow the law of the land. After that, Indira Gandhiji banned it again. They went and said No, we will cooperate. We will abide by the laws of the land. There cannot be one law of the land for the rest of the country and for one organisation like this...' According to an ANI report, earlier on Thursday, addressing a program on the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, RSS General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale remarked that during the Emergency, terms like "Socialism" and "Secularism" were forcibly inserted into the Constitution, a move that needs to be reconsidered today. Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Mahesh Tenginkai hit back at Kharge as well, stating that the Congress does not even deserve to sit in the "opposition" and that Kharge should think before making such a statement. The BJP MLA stated that his party will remain in power for the next 20 years and that no attention will be given to Priyank Kharge's statement. "Priyank Kharge should think once. BJP is PM Narendra Modi's party, which will stay in power for 20 more years. Your party (Congress) will not be in power. It doesn't even deserve to be in is no need to give more attention to his statement", the BJP MLA told ANI. The Karnataka unit of the BJP slammed Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge through a message posted on X. Stating that Kalaburagi, which has been "ruled" by Kharge for more than 50 years, remains one of the most "underdeveloped" parts of Karnataka. "Priyank Kharge, a minister only because of his father's influence, is now threatening bans like it's 1975 all over again. The Congress's alleged "President/High Command" Mallikarjun Kharge ruled the Kalaburagi region for half a century. Yet it remains one of the most underdeveloped parts of Karnataka", the post said. RSS wants to create caste-based, religiously divided society, says Speaker Appavu
The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh wants to uproot the words secularism, socialism and egalitarian society from Indian Constitution as the outfit aims to create an unequal, caste-based and religiously divided society with the 'upper caste' ruling the roost, Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker M. Appavu has said. During an informal chat with reporters, Mr. Appavu, after inaugurating an urban health centre at Chidambara Nagar near Thatchanallur here on Thursday, said the RSS had never accepted the ideas of secularism, socialism and egalitarian society and always advocated for a caste-based and religiously divided society with the 'upper caste' at the top of the administration.. Hence, RSS leaders were repeatedly stressing that the words secularism and socialism be removed from the Indian Constitution. 'While the Indian Constitution vociferously supports secularism, socialism and egalitarian society, the RSS works overtime to uproot it from the Constitution as this outfit sees these high ideals as the stumbling block for achieving its dream of creating caste-based, unequal and religiously divided society. Hence the Union Government is travelling towards this direction to realise its masters' dream, which is not good for the country's integrity and prosperity. Having realised this wickedness, the people of Tamil Nadu will never accept these evil designs,' Mr. Appavu said. The Speaker also said the RSS and Union Home Minister Amit Shah were keen on the obliteration of English, the country's link language, by initially pushing forward Hindi and then replacing Hindi with Sanskrit later. 'It will also not be possible in Tamil Nadu.' Terming the recent custodial death in Sivaganga district as 'unpardonable', Mr. Appavu said the Chief Minister had ensured the registration of a case against five policemen and their arrest since the brutal incident was against law and the people. 'The Chief Minister even went on to apologise to the family of the deceased, which shows his respect for high values.' Asked about the information that Ajith was brutally thrashed on the instruction from an IAS officer, Mr. Appavu said: 'The probe is on to bring out the truth. If an IAS officer is found to be involved in this incident, the Chief Minister will not spare the officer also'. On the ongoing internal squabbles in the PMK, the Speaker said they (party founder S. Ramadoss and his son Anbumani Ramadoss) would sort it out.
