This ‘big, beautiful' beach near NYC was just named the best in the US

New York Post22-05-2025
Beach, please. As if the Hamptons needed any more hype.
With Memorial Day Weekend right around the corner, a couple of Long Island hot spots were ranked No. 1 and No. 5 on the list of the top 10 beaches in the U.S. for 2025 — just as a neighboring beach was identified as a diarrhea-prone 'bacteria hot spot.'
Cooper's Beach — located on the Southampton shores on the eastern end — has been ranked the best beach in America, according to Florida International University environmental sciences expert Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, aka 'Dr. Beach,' a nickname earned because of annual rankings he started in 1991.

The New York beach was noted for its 'white quartz sand' and 'large sand dunes covered by American beach grass interspersed with extravagant mansions.'
'It's a big, beautiful beach,' Leatherman simply told CNN.

The beach boss — who uses a 50-factor checklist primarily made with swimming in mind, but accounts for scenery, sports and more — claimed the only issue with the swanky spot is traffic and expensive parking.
To avoid being stuck in the driver's seat or an unwanted parking bill, Leatherman suggested riding the free shuttle from downtown Southampton.
The beach landed at the second spot last year, coming in behind Hawaii's Duke Kahanamoku Beach on Oahu, which didn't even make the 2025 list.

The second and third spots were taken by Hawaii's Wailea Beach on the island of Maui and Poipu Beach on the island of Kauai, respectively.
Florida joined the list with Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park in Naples at No. 4 and St. Andrews State Park in Panama City at No. 7.
Then the Hamptons reappeared at No. 5 with Main Beach in East Hampton.

'Main Beach provides the perfect blend of nature and built environment,' Leatherman wrote. 'The big, wide sandy beach composed of grainy quartz grains has towering sand dunes and beautiful clean and clear blue water.'
The expert also noted the high chance of star-spotting — and he doesn't mean looking up at the night sky.
Again, his only problem is the parking; at this spot, he recommends biking.

Leatherman listed Beachwalker Park on Kiawah Island in South Carolina at No. 6 and St. Andrews State Park in Panama City, Florida at No. 7.
Hawaii was honored again with Kaunaoa on the Big Island and Lanikai Beach on Oahu. being No. 8 and No. 9.
The list was rounded out with a classic New England escape — Coast Guard Beach on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, at No. 10.

He noted that while his choices might be a surprise, many of America's beaches are too polluted, murky, hot or cold to top his list.

Myungrang Hotdog brings Korea's crispy craze to Columbus

After reading about America's Korean food craze, I finally visited one of Columbus' newer options, Myungrang Hotdog. Catch up quick: The South Korean chain has 15 U.S. locations and this is the only one in Ohio. It opened in 2022 and other local spots offering the viral snacks have followed, including Mochinut in Grandview and Chungchun Rice Dog inside Polaris. The vibe: Myungrang is no-frills — just an ordering counter in a small Short North storefront with standing-room table counters on either side. Plus: Expect lots of K-pop. Dogs are made-to-order, taking about 10 minutes, but it's worth it. The only way to eat them is hot and freshly out of the fryer. What I ate: First, the original hot dog ($5), in a "secret batter" that's deliciously crispy on the outside and light and chewy inside. Then an adventurous squid-ink dog ($7), with half meat and half mozzarella filling. The ink-infused batter makes it extra savory. There are several dipping sauces, from basic ketchup to sweet chili and cheesy mustard (my favorite). My take: The meat inside was surprisingly good and the gooey cheese was definitely TikTok-worthy. It's a dense treat that I probably couldn't eat often — but the same goes for American corn dogs. Stop by: Noon-8pm Sunday-Thursday. Open till midnight Friday and 1am Saturday. 850 N. High St. Menu. 🌏 This trip was part of our Eating Around the World series. Check out the other international foods we've mapped so far.

Alaska Airlines lifts ground stop after IT outage affects operations

Alaska Airlines said its operations have resumed after a temporary ground stop was issued on all its flights and those of a regional subsidiary Horizon Air due to an IT outage, the company said Sunday evening. Alaska Airlines said that around 11 p.m. ET it experienced an 'IT outage that resulted in a temporary, system-wide ground stop for Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air flights.' Horizon Air is the Alaska Air Group's subsidiary serving mainly the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. The Federal Aviation Administration's website said late Sunday the request to ground all Alaska Airlines mainline flights was made around 10:52 p.m. ET. As of 2 a.m. ET Monday, 'the ground stop has been lifted, and our operations have resumed,' the airline said in a statement to CNN. The ground stop left some passengers stranded on planes for hours. Video from a passenger aboard a grounded flight at Seattle–Tacoma International Airport shows travelers waiting to deplane as a crew member is heard apologizing on the PA system and calling it a 'very, very frustrating night.' 'As soon as we landed, we moved to the middle traffic lane, and they let us know there was a malfunction in the computer system,' Chris Fabregas, a passenger who had flown in from Nashville, told CNN. Fabregas said passengers were eventually allowed to deplane after waiting more than three hours. This marks the airline's second fleet grounding request for its mainline and Horizon flights in just over a year, following a system upgrade issue in April 2024. Alaska Airlines did not detail cause of the IT outage on Sunday, but warned of delays and advised travelers to check their flight status before heading to the airport. 'As we reposition our aircraft and crews, there will most likely be residual impacts to our flights. It will take some time to get our overall operations back to normal,' the airline said in its statement. 'We apologize to our guests for this inconvenience.' A ground stop is an air traffic control measure that restricts certain planes from taking off and requires them to remain on the ground, according to the FAA, causing potential travel disruptions and delays. Alaska Airlines said in April it operates 238 aircraft under its primary brand, all Boeing planes, and 45 under Horizon Air. It is the fifth-largest airline in the US, according to its website, and serves over 120 destinations across five countries, catering to more than 44 million passengers a year. This story has been updated with additional information. CNN's Martin Goillandeau contributed to this report.
