Three classic Aberdeen-Celtic Scottish Cup ties

Yahoo23-05-2025
With Saturday's final at Hampden fast approaching, BBC Scotland has flicked through the archives to look back on some classic Scottish Cup ties between Aberdeen and Celtic.
Here are three from recent memory to whet your appetite for the weekend...
Aberdeen 3-3 Celtic (5-6 pens) - Scottish Cup semi-final, April 2024
You only have to rewind a year to remind yourself of arguably the greatest cup encounter between these sides.
Following an incredible six-goal thriller, Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart went from zero to hero after hitting the woodwork with what would have been a match-winning moment, before decisively saving Killian Phillips' spot-kick in a dramatic shootout.
That drama was befitting of a classic match, with Aberdeen scoring two last-gasp equalisers.
With interim boss Peter Leven in charge, the Dons took a surprise lead after two minutes through Bojan Miovski.
Celtic fought back to go ahead when Nicolas Kuhn capitalised on Angus MacDonald's error before James Forrest curled in a second.
Ester Sokler's 90th-minute header forced extra time, and MacDonald made up for his mishap to force penalties with a header of his own in minute 119 after Matt O'Riley rocketed Celtic 3-2 up.
In the end, the Parkhead side prevailed on penalties to their 60th Scottish Cup final, where they defeated rivals Rangers back at Hampden.
Celtic 2-1 Aberdeen - Scottish Cup final, May 2017
A sore memory for any Dons fan, but a magical day for anyone of a Celtic persuasion.
With the 2017 final heading for extra time, the Glasgow side completed a domestic treble without losing a game when Tom Rogic fired in a stoppage-time winner in Brendan Rodgers' debut season in Scotland.
A neat Jonny Hayes strike after nine minutes rewarded the Dons' impressive start, but Celtic were level within two minutes as Stuart Armstrong was able to pick out the far corner.
Late Celtic pressure paid off in the dying seconds as Rogic fired low past goalkeeper Joe Lewis to spark wild scenes.
The post-match celebrations will be remembered for defender Kieran Tierney unexpectedly reappearing to lift the trophy after suffering a facial injury in the first half.
Tierney said on social media that the win was "worth a broken jaw".
Celtic 1-2 Aberdeen - Scottish Cup last 16, February 2014
A positive one to end on for Dons fans, revisiting their team's comeback win at Celtic Park in 2014.
Aberdeen had not won at Parkhead for six years and fell behind when Anthony Stokes netted a composed finish.
But Russell Anderson's leveller and Peter Pawlett's winner gave Derek McInnes' side a shock victory.
That win sent McInnes' men, who won the League Cup that season, into the quarters, but they were eliminated in the last four by St Johnstone.

Celtic Should Acquire Jonathan Kuminga To Rebuild Their Dynasty In The Quickest Way Possible

Celtic Should Acquire Jonathan Kuminga To Rebuild Their Dynasty In The Quickest Way Possible originally appeared on Fadeaway World. The Boston Celtics have faced several challenges this offseason. From injuries to roster shake-ups, the Celtics are no longer the championship-caliber team they were only two years ago. As the second apron looms over Boston, the team has had to make some difficult decisions to shed salary. This resulted in a methodical approach involving trading and signing for low-cost contracts with high value. In doing so, the Celtics acquired a talented young guard in Anfernee Simons. Unfortunately, still above the second apron, Boston has been exploring ways to offload Simons' contract to gain financial flexibility. While this is a solid approach, it doesn't bring them closer to returning to championship form. Instead, we present a different approach, one that could help them return to contention as quickly as possible. Proposed Trade Details Boston Celtics Receive: Jonathan Kuminga Golden State Warriors Receive: Derrick White, 2031 first-round pick In a surprising move, the Celtics could opt to offload Derrick White and a first-round pick in 2031 to acquire a forward with star potential. Why Do The Warriors Do This Deal? Jonathan Kuminga has generated a lot of buzz in the offseason. As a restricted free agent, the avenues to sign Kuminga have been limited. But considering the kind of leverage he holds over the Golden State Warriors and their future moves this offseason, it appears that the forward has complete control over where he would like to go. The Warriors' best offer to Kuminga is known, but the Celtics could potentially offer a better package. By presenting a potential deal in the range of three years, $60 million, with a player-option in the final year, Boston could also generate some intrigue from the forward. The Warriors have indicated their list of demands for Kuminga. Although teams like the Sacramento Kings and the Phoenix Suns have presented relevant offers, Golden State hasn't been intrigued by them. In this regard, an offer of this nature from the Celtics could be of interest to the Warriors. Derrick White has been on Golden State's radar this offseason. He played a vital role in Boston's title charge, emerging as a significant contributor for the team when called upon. White's playing style would allow him to fit right in with the Warriors. His perimeter shooting ability, defensive upside, and off-ball movement all present valid cases for him to be successful in a Warriors jersey. Last season, he continued to be a starter for Boston. He put up an average of 16.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 4.8 assists, while shooting 44.2% from the field and 38.2% from three-point range. His two selections to the All-Defensive team also add to his reputation as a two-way threat. Parting ways with Kuminga would allow Golden State to begin the process of completing its remaining roster moves. This would allow the team to make the necessary signings to improve their roster strength. Can Celtics Return To Title-Contending Shape? As beneficial as this deal is for the Warriors, it has greater significance for the Celtics. The arrival of Kuminga puts the Celtics back on the championship timeline. With Kuminga's estimated annual cap hit of $20 million, the Celtics would successfully shed $8 million in salary by trading White. While this could weaken their perimeter defense, Boston will need to take such a risk. The 22-year-old forward boasts immense talent and physical tools. His length, athleticism, and other natural qualities only complement his offensive skill set and defensive potential. In a more prominent role, Kuminga has demonstrated that he is capable of producing effective results on offense. In this regard, his averages of 15.3 points and 4.6 rebounds per game are modest numbers that may not fully reflect his on-court impact. Kuminga's arrival also signals a resurgence for the Celtics. With Jayson Tatum out of the rotation, the 22-year-old would join the starting lineup with Celtics star Jaylen Brown, along with Anfernee Simons and Payton Pritchard. This could prove to be a very potent offensive rotation. Kuminga's defensive upside is relatively untapped, which many consider to be a shortcoming on his end. But given the physical tools at his disposal, and in the right environment, the forward could emerge as a very serviceable defender, too. His development over the next season sets up the Celtics' 2026-27 campaign with Tatum back in action. If Tatum continues progressing in his recovery, there is a likelihood that he could join the team later in the season itself. With a lineup featuring Tatum, Brown, Simons, and Kuminga, Boston could be on the path to title glory. Whether it is this season or the next, the Celtics will need to make the necessary moves to surround this core unit with story was originally reported by Fadeaway World on Aug 1, 2025, where it first appeared.

Turner returns to Revolution on loan from Lyon after transfer to French team from Nottingham Forest

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Matt Turner is returning to his Major League Soccer roots as he looks to get back into position to compete for the starting job as U.S. national team's goalkeeper. Turner transferred from England's Nottingham Forest to France's Lyon on Friday, then was loaned to the New England Revolution through June 30, 2026, in a deal that gives the Revolution an option to acquire his rights. Turner will be a designated player on the Revolution's roster for the remainder of the 2025 season. He'll be eligible for targeted allocation money in 2026. Turner left the Revolution for Arsenal ahead of the 2022-23 season but played in just five Europa League and two FA Cup matches and transferred to Forest in August 2023 . He lost the No. 1 spot there after allowing soft goals against Tottenham, Manchester United and Arsenal and was loaned for 2024-25 to Crystal Palace, where he played in just one League Cup game and three FA Cup matches — none after March 1. Turner was displaced by New York City's Matt Freese as the U.S. goalkeeper for this year's CONCACAF Gold Cup. The 31-year-old Turner became the No. 1 U.S. goalkeeper ahead of the 2022 World Cup and had started 14 consecutive competitive matches for the U.S. and 23 of 24 before the Gold Cup. Turner will now look to get back to that level in New England, where he made his pro debut in 2016. He last played for New England in 2022, posting a 53.3% save percentage over five starts. ___ AP soccer:
