Hydrogen Hits the Scene Hard, with BMW Leading the Way
The iX5 Hydrogen, first revealed in 2024 and previously tested by Arab GT, served as the company's pilot project—proof that hydrogen fuel cell vehicles can deliver on both performance and practicality. According to Dr. Goldner, BMW is now preparing for full-scale production, with its first hydrogen-powered vehicle expected to reach the market sometime between 2028 and 2030.

A Strategic Alliance with Toyota
A key part of BMW's hydrogen roadmap is its strengthened partnership with Toyota. Dr. Goldner highlighted that Toyota is contributing heavily to the development of the new-generation fuel cell system. By leveraging Toyota's deep expertise in hydrogen technology, BMW is positioning itself to meet the cost-efficiency targets necessary for mass production by the end of the decade.
Hydrogen Cars: Performance of EVs, Convenience of Gasoline
Dr. Goldner noted that hydrogen vehicles combine the best aspects of electric mobility: zero emissions, quiet operation, and quick acceleration. But unlike battery EVs, they offer the major advantage of refueling in just 3 to 4 minutes—comparable to conventional gasoline vehicles. This speed addresses one of the primary concerns many drivers have with electric cars, especially on longer trips where charging downtime becomes a significant inconvenience.
Infrastructure Growth and Long-Term Strategy
BMW views hydrogen not as a gamble, but as a calculated step toward a more adaptable, clean-energy future. The company is encouraged by the growing hydrogen fueling infrastructure in regions such as Europe, Japan, and South Korea. However, it acknowledges that hurdles remain, particularly in scaling up production and reducing costs. Still, the company now sees hydrogen as a 'strategic opportunity' rather than a technological risk.
Public Perception: Divided but Curious
The public response has been mixed. Discussions on Reddit reveal skepticism about hydrogen's viability compared to the maturing battery EV ecosystem, especially in terms of efficiency and operational costs. On the other hand, some users highlight the fast refueling times as a compelling reason to consider hydrogen, particularly in areas where charging stations are crowded or slow.
In summary, BMW is betting on hydrogen as a complementary path to electrification—one that may appeal to a different kind of driver, in different kinds of markets, and in a future where flexibility could be just as important as innovation.

Cannes Is Done with Huge Cruise Ships as It Joins the Overtourism Backlash
The French Riviera resort of Cannes is imposing what its city council calls 'drastic regulation' on cruise ships, halving the number of very large ships allowed in its harbor and capping the daily number of passenger visits at 6,000 starting next year. The home of the world's premier film festival is joining a growing global backlash against overtourism, which recently saw uproar over Jeff Bezos' and Lauren Sanchez' Venice wedding this weekend, water-gun protests in Spain and a surprise strike at the Louvre Museum. 'Less numerous, less big, less polluting and more esthetic' — that's the aim of Cannes city councilors who voted Friday to introduce new limits on cruise ships in its ports. The aim is to ban all ships carrying more than 1,300 people by 2030, city hall said in a statement. Starting next year, a maximum of 6,000 cruise passengers will be allowed to disembark per day, and the number of ships carrying more than 5,000 passengers will be cut by 48% in 2026. Larger ships will be expected to transfer passengers to smaller boats to enter Cannes. France, which drew in some 100 million visitors last year, more than any other European country and more than the country's population, is on the front line of efforts to balance economic benefits of tourism with environmental concerns while managing ever-growing crowds. 'Cannes has become a major cruise ship destination, with real economic benefits. It's not about banning cruise ships, but about regulating, organizing, setting guidelines for their navigation,' Mayor David Lisnard said in a statement. Cruise operators have called such restrictions damaging for destinations and for passengers. Two cruise ships were scheduled to dock in Cannes on Sunday, each bigger than the upcoming 1,300-passenger limit and with a combined capacity of more than 7,000 people. Their owners did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the new restrictions. The nearby Mediterranean city of Nice announced limits on cruise ships earlier this year, as have some other European cities.

Mercedes' Electric AMG GT XX Debuts a World-First Automotive Innovation
Just days ago, Mercedes-AMG pulled the covers off its most futuristic concept yet—the all-electric AMG GT XX. As expected, the car boasts extreme performance numbers, from a jaw-dropping 1000 kW output and three electric motors to lightning-fast 5-minute charging capabilities. With a record-setting drag coefficient of 0.198 and a top speed worthy of the AMG badge, this machine clearly means business. But these mind-blowing figures are just the surface. The GT XX isn't merely a stats powerhouse—it's a rolling laboratory of firsts. Chief among them? A world-first innovation: Bluetooth-controlled active aero wheels. Yes, you read that right—Bluetooth, on your wheels. A Glimpse at the Powerhouse Though the spotlight is on the wheels, it's worth remembering just how potent the GT XX is. Delivering 1,340 horsepower through a tri-motor all-wheel-drive setup, the car rockets to a top speed of 360 km/h. The 800-volt system allows ultra-fast charging, adding up to 400 km of range in just five minutes. Inspired by the classic C111, its design pushes aerodynamic boundaries with smart ventilation systems, electronically managed wheel flaps, and closed aero surfaces that optimize airflow without relying on electric actuators. Inside, you're greeted by GT3-style racing seats, a six-point harness, and a dual-screen setup tailored for intuitive performance driving. It's a showcase of AMG's electrified future under the platform—an unmistakable signal that Mercedes is not just entering the performance EV game but aiming to dominate it. Rewriting the Rulebook with Bluetooth Wheels Now for the headliner: those wheels. The GT XX introduces active aero flaps on the wheels that can open or close depending on whether the brakes need cooling or the car needs to slice more cleanly through air. While that kind of airflow trickery isn't entirely new, what is revolutionary is how these systems are powered. Unlike traditional systems that rely on mechanical linkages or wiring, these wheel flaps communicate via Bluetooth—yes, Bluetooth. Each wheel hub generates its own power through rotation, and the flaps respond to signals wirelessly, completely untethered from the car's main body. It's an entirely new way of thinking about connectivity in vehicles. We've seen Bluetooth in infotainment systems, keyless entries, and smartphones—but in rotating, autonomous, functional wheel systems? That's a first. Mercedes-AMG CEO Michael Schiebe confirmed the company is seriously considering bringing this innovation to production. His words? 'The likelihood is not low.' Nostalgia Meets the Future And despite its fully electric nature, AMG hasn't let go of its signature character. The GT XX uses directional speakers embedded in the headlights to simulate the roar of a V8 engine—what AMG calls their best-sounding simulated V8 ever. Inside, a paddle-shift system mimics the gear changes of traditional performance cars, offering a tactile, emotionally engaging driving experience. This bold mix of heritage and innovation underlines AMG's commitment to preserving its soul while redefining performance for a new era.
