Perak seeks JRTB upgrade in 13MP after fatal bus crash
Saarani said the state government had conveyed its intention to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during his visit to Lumut last week.
'What's most important is to reassess the alignment and widening of the JRTB. The upgrade involves more than just resurfacing; it requires a full reconstruction, as the existing structure is so old that some of the damage has exposed the road base.
'This highway has been in use for over 40 years, and simply patching up damaged sections may no longer be sufficient. However, the state government fully understands that constructing a new alignment or rebuilding the JRTB would require substantial funding,' he said at a press conference after officiating the closing ceremony of the 2025 National Training Week at the Ipoh Convention Centre here today.
Saarani said the state government has also instructed the State Infrastructure, Energy, Water and Public Transport chairman, Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin, and Human Resources, Health, Indian Community Affairs and National Integration chairman A. Sivanesan, to prepare a report and study on upgrading the JRTB and Gerik Hospital.
'Mohammad Nizar will obtain information and data from the Works Ministry regarding the upgrade of the JRTB, while Sivanesan is working on applying to the Health Ministry for the upgrading of Gerik Hospital, as there is an urgent need in the event of accidents. Typically, victims are taken to Hospital Taiping or the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital.
'If upgraded, it would be sufficient for patients or victims to be treated at Gerik Hospital, provided it is equipped with the necessary facilities and expertise. Once the study is completed, we will submit a letter to the relevant ministry,' he added.
In the early hours of June 9, a tragic accident along the JRTB near Tasik Banding, Gerik, claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Perguruan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students when the chartered bus transporting them from Jertih, Terengganu, to the main campus in Tanjong Malim, Perak, was involved in a crash.
The crash also left 33 others injured, including the bus driver and his assistant, as well as the driver and three passengers of a multi-purpose vehicle.

Perak introduces special module to help PWDs gain employment
TAIPING: The Perak government, through several departments and agencies, has developed a special module to help Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) receive training for suitable employment, thereby enabling them to earn an income. State Human Resources, Health, Indian Community Affairs and National Integration Committee chairman A. Sivanesan said those interested can register at his office, the Social Welfare Department (JKM), or the Perak Children's Aspiration Centre (Pasak). He said the module offers both short- and long-term courses, with each participant receiving an allowance of RM50 per day. 'Currently, there are about 5,000 unemployed persons with disabilities in Perak. I believe that through these modules, whether short-term (10 days to two weeks) or long-term (over three months), we can help them. 'This is more than just training; it is about creating opportunities for PWDs to start a new chapter in life through a career that boosts their confidence and improves their standard of living,' he said. He said this at a press conference, representing the Perak Menteri Besar, at the opening of the 2nd Malaysian Occupational Therapy Symposium organised by the Ministry of Health (MOH) here today. The event was also attended by MOH's head of Occupational Therapist Profession, Nora Hamid. Sivanesan added that the module is open to all PWDs, regardless of gender, race, or religion. In a separate matter, he said the state government does not reject the proposal to deploy a dedicated team or health personnel to monitor and improve emergency response along the East-West Highway (JRTB). Sivanesan said the proposal was appropriate and would be raised in discussions with the relevant authorities for further consideration. 'It's a proposal we believe is worth implementing. However, for now, the Transport Ministry is working to enhance safety along the JRTB route by installing additional street lights and warning signs. 'Road repair works are also underway by the Public Works Department. In the meantime, I urge all road users to exercise caution and follow all posted warning signs along the route,' he said.

The Health, Labour and Welfare Ministry spearheaded this initiative, which leverages the appeal of these iconic figures to encourage people, especially children, to develop better sleep habits. The characters are expected to participate in various public awareness events, adding a fun, recognizable element to the important message that everyone needs to get enough sleep. The ministry recommends nine to 12 hours of sleep for elementary students, and eight to 10 hours for junior and high school students, to maintain good health. Since last fiscal year, the ministry has been collaborating with the Pokemon Company, which publishes 'Pokemon Sleep,' a smartphone game that tracks the user's sleep. Together, they have created brochures and other materials to encourage adequate sleep. On Thursday (June 26), the day of the announcement, Snorlax and a nightcapped Pikachu visited the ministry and received their letters of appointment from Health, Labour and Welfare Minister Takamaro Fukuoka. 'We hope to continue working with the health ministry to positively change sleep habits,' said Pokemon Company Representative Director Takato Utsunomiya. - The Japan News/ANN
