Aspiring Thai Model Brutally Assaulted In New York By Ex-Con Released On Bail
A young aspiring Thai model was viciously assaulted and robbed at a Brooklyn subway station by a repeat offender who had previously been released on bail, prosecutors said. The shocking incident has reignited criticism over the handling of violent offenders in New York's justice system.
As per the news report, Zine Raksasutee, 26, was attacked on June 22 at the Chauncey Street subway station in Bushwick. According to a criminal complaint, the suspect, Lewis Doctor, 54, grabbed her by the throat, slammed her against a wall, and repeatedly punched her while wearing a ring that caused serious facial injuries.
Raksasutee, who is in the US studying English and building her modelling portfolio, sustained a split lip, cuts, and severe trauma. The attacker stole her iPhone, AirPods, debit card, handbag, and hard drive - items worth approximately $1,400.
The doctor was arrested three days later and indicted on multiple charges, including first-degree assault and robbery. If convicted, he faces up to 25 years in prison. Notably, he was previously released on $5,000 bail in January 2024 after allegedly robbing someone with a BB gun. Despite prosecutors seeking higher bail, the court denied it. This time, a $50,000 bail request was granted.
In a statement through her attorney, Raksasutee said, "I am grateful to be alive. I hope speaking out will help keep others safe."
Her lawyer, Eric Parnes, condemned the repeated failures of the system, stating, "How many more must suffer before we take real action?"

In the proceedings in the US, two charges are primary: of money laundering and criminal conspiracy. The investigation agencies say Nirav Modi had, through his companies, embezzled ₹6,498 crore from PNB, while the remaining amount was misappropriated by his uncle Mehul Choksi in a similar modus operandi. 'Forced directors to lie, relocate' Nehal laundered the proceeds of the crime on behalf of Nirav through a web of shell companies and offshore transactions, as per the ED. He transported 50 kg of gold and 'substantial' cash from Dubai, the chargesheet says. In a supplementary chargesheet submitted by the CBI, he is 'accused number 27' for destroying evidence in Dubai. The CBI says Nehal Modi intimidated directors of Dubai-based shell companies used by Nirav Modi to 'give a veneer of legitimacy' to a fraudulent trade, PTI has reported. These 'intimidated' people, employees of Nirav Modi's companies, were 'coerced' into relocating from Dubai to Cairo, during which their phones, laptops and computer servers were destroyed to erase evidence.

Nehal Modi has been arrested in the United States following an extradition request made by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case worth ₹ 13,000, PTI reported citing officials. Nehal Modi, 46 is the younger brother of fugitive diamond merchant Nirav Modi. Nehal Modi, born and raised in Antwerp, Belgium, and fluent in English, Gujarati, and Hindi, is wanted in India for laundering criminal proceeds for Nirav Modi, who is held at London prison and facing extradition proceedings in UK upon India's request. The US prosecutors initiated extradition proceedings based on two charges, including money laundering charges under Section 3 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, and criminal conspiracy charges under Sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 201 (disappearance) of the Indian Penal Code, PTI reported. As per the ED and CBI probe, Nehal Modi played an important role in laundering the proceeds of crime on behalf of Nirav Modi. He is accused of helping in concealing and transferring large amounts of illegal funds through a network of shell companies and international transactions, violating Indian laws. The chargesheet filed by ED stated that Nehal has been charged with destruction of evidence and 'knowingly and intentionally' assisting Nirav Modi, it added. After the PNB fraud came into light, Nehal, along with Nirav's close aide and executive Mihir R Bhansali, "took 50 kg gold and substantial cash from Dubai, and directed dummy directors not to reveal his name before the authorities," ED alleged. In 2018, PNB revealed a major fraud valued at ₹ 13,500 crore, which started at one Mumbai branch and involved prominent figures such as Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi, Gitanjali Gems' managing director. Both Modi and Choksi are accused of manipulating the bank's systems to acquire fraudulent Letters of Undertaking (LoUs) with the help of some rogue bank officials, enabling them to divert large amounts of money. The upcoming hearing is set for July 17, where Nehal Modi might request bail, a move anticipated to be challenged by the US prosecutors, PTI reported. Notably, this is not the first time that Nehal Modi has been accused of such a scam. In 2020, A New York court convicted Modi of fraudulently acquiring diamonds valued at over $2.6 million from LLD Diamonds USA, one of the largest diamond firms globally, according to a report by the Hindustan Times.
