vivo still leads the Indian smartphone market in the first half of 2025

vivo led the Indian smartphone market with 8.1 million shipments and a 21% share of the pie, according to new data released by the analysts at Canalys today. Its shipments have grown 31% over Q2 2024. It's followed by Samsung with 6.2 million shipments and a 16% market share, representing a 2% year-over-year (YoY) growth. In third is Oppo with 5 million shipments, a 13% market share, and 24% growth. Interestingly, the brands in fourth and fifth positions have both seen negative annual growth. Xiaomi managed 5 million shipments in Q2 this year with a 13% market share, and it's down 25% YoY, while fifth-place Realme shipped 3.6 million units for a 9% market share, down 17% from the year-ago quarter. The market overall grew 7% for a total of 39 million units shipped, up from 36.4 million in Q2 2024. The Indian smartphone market hasn't seen more shipments than in this Q2 since Q3 of last year, which is also the last time we saw any year-on-year growth. Canalys Principal Analyst Sanyam Chaurasia says vivo's V50 series "gained traction in Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities via large-format retail and wedding-led campaigns, while the Y-series sustained momentum in smaller cities and semi-urban markets through deep distribution and promoter push". Meanwhile, "the T-series also scaled steadily online with a broadened portfolio". Oppo's strong quarter was "buoyed by strong offline momentum from the A5 series and growing online traction via the K13". If you're wondering where Apple is - it was sixth, with the iPhone 16 family accounting for more than 55% of its shipments. Interestingly, the iPhone 16e has lost momentum post-launch, "as consumers questioned the value of its single-camera design and largely unrealized Apple Intelligence features". Canalys projects a small decline in shipments for the full year, "as structural demand challenges persist". Source

Nokia may be looking to license its brand to a new smartphone maker

Nokia and HMD Global started to part ways last year, which included de-listing Nokia-branded phones from and replacing most with corresponding HMD-branded models. But the Nokia brand may live on in the phone world if the Finnish company finds another partner. On the Nokia sub-reddit, a Nokia Community Manager posted that the company is open to collaborating with a 'large scale mobile manufacturer'. Of course, the words of a social media account manager don't carry much weight and Reddit isn't the best place to find a smartphone ODM. Nokia had licensed its brand in several different segments – Streamview made TVs, RichGo made headphones (and other smartphone accessories), OFF Global made laptops. As you can probably tell from the use of past tense, those branding deals have also come to an end. HMD is not doing so well and recently announced that it will scale back its US operations. Nokia itself had to fend off rumors of trouble – last year, reports came out that Samsung was looking at acquiring Nokia's network business. The Finns were quick to deny those rumors, however, and we haven't heard anything about it since. Nokia will publish its Q2 2025 results on Thursday. In Q1, it reported an operating profit of €156 million on net sales of €4.39 billion. Which company would you like to see pick up the Nokia brand for phones – one of the established players or another startup like HMD? Source | Via (in Romanian)

Yes, for sure. 0% No, I'll use whatever the phone comes with. 0% I use a totally different browser anyways. 0% – Perplexity AI CEO Aravind Srinivas for Reuters, July 2025 By now, you should've already heard about the beef between Google and the US Department of Justice: the DOJ claims Google monopolized the search and digital advertising not clear whether Google's business will be broken up forcefully, but there's a possibility that future smartphones could arrive without the omnipresent Google Chrome mobile web browser out of the box. This, however, has nothing to do with the DOJ. Similar rumors have surfaced a few times in recent times:Enter Perplexity. There's a chance you've heard of this one, too, as we recently reported that Apple is considering buying Perplexity AI Perplexity AI is an Nvidia-backed startup, positioning itself as a rival to Google with its AI-driven search engine. The company is now in talks with our beloved brands – yes, including Samsung and Apple – to pre-install its new Comet browser, CEO Aravind Srinivas told Reuters . Pre-installation could dramatically expand Perplexity's user base by leveraging the tendency of consumers to stick with default apps, a phenomenon often referred to as browser basically the digital equivalent of "too lazy to switch or install other than the pre-installed apps". Most people just use whatever browser comes pre-installed on their device – be it Chrome on Android or Safari on acknowledged the difficulty of convincing mobile device makers to switch from entrenched options like Google Chrome, pointing to the challenge of overcoming user habits on mobile platforms. Comet, which is currently in beta and limited to desktop users, combines web browsing with Perplexity's AI features. It allows users to query personal data – such as emails, calendars, and browsing history – and perform tasks like scheduling events or summarizing web pages directly within the company expects to target "tens to hundreds of millions" of users in 2025, following the stabilization of its desktop version, which is currently being tested by a few hundred thousand users. This move rides the wave of a bigger industry trend, where browsers are getting a brain upgrade with this month, there were reports that OpenAI is working on its own agentic AI browser capable of automating processes like booking travel or managing finances. Meanwhile, Chrome dominates mobile browsing with about 70% market share, while Apple's Safari and Samsung's browser account for another 24%, according to Statcounter.
