Union Minister directs officials to complete Hubballi sports complex in 5 months
On May 5, Pralhad Joshi reviewed the progress of work on the sports complex at Lohiya Nagar in Hubballi. He was accompanied by Mayor Ramanna Badiger, Deputy Mayor Durgamma Bijawad, Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Arvind Bellad, and Municipal Commissioner Rudresh Ghali.
Speaking to press persons, Mr. Pralhad Joshi said that although Smart City scheme officials had promised to complete the work in the next two months, he had told them to take five months, but complete all the work within that period, without fail.
The Union Minister said that the sports complex of international standard was inspired by the Sports Village in Jharkhand. 'However, maintenance of the sports complex is a big challenge. Myself and MLA Arvind Bellad have spoken to various companies on the issue of maintenance of the sports complex. We plan to chose a company that has expertise in training athletes for international events. A company will be finalised soon,' he said.
Mr. Joshi said that the facilities would be provided free of cost to sportspersons from the region who have participated in national and international events. They are also contemplating providing the facilities at a nominal charge for other players.
Mentioning that he was disappointed with implementation of the smart city work in the twin cities that were taken up at a total cost of over ₹900 crore, the Union Minister said he would soon convene a progress review meeting.
'I have expressed my displeasure over various projects under the smart city scheme, including Tolanakere, Mahatma Gandhi Park, Green Mobility Corridor and roads. The apathy of officials of the government of Karnataka, who have the responsibility of executing the work, is the reason for the sorry state of affairs,' he said.
Although March 31 was the deadline for implementation of the work under smart city scheme, several projects require time to be completed, he said adding that they would request the government of Karnataka to continue the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) constituted for the purpose.
Mr. Joshi said that there is a need for around ₹60 crore for construction of a hostel, and recruitment of trainers and coaches for various sports and games. The plan is to request the government of Karnataka to extend financial assistance.

Nagpur: Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has proposed a ₹10,000 crore fertiliser plant in Nagpur district, positioning it as a game-changing investment to revive Vidarbha's agrarian economy. The proposed project, a joint venture between GAIL, the department of fertilizers, and the state government, will have an annual production capacity of 12.7 lakh tonnes. During a meeting with Union health minister JP Nadda in Delhi, Fadnavis—who is on a two-day visit to the national capital—requested central subsidy and policy clearance. "This will be a transformative project for Vidarbha," the CM said, highlighting its dual impact on rural employment and fertiliser availability. Nadda responded by instructing the state to submit a cabinet proposal. Fertilizers secretary Ratak Kumar Mishra was also present at the meeting. Fadnavis' visit included a series of high-level meetings to accelerate approvals for major infrastructure and environmental projects. In a meeting with finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, he sought clearance from the ministry of economic affairs for five international funding proposals. These included ₹8,651 crore from the Asian Development Bank to connect villages with concrete roads, ₹4,326 crore for coastal protection, and another ₹4,326 crore to treat municipal wastewater for industrial reuse. Two additional proposals, routed through the World Bank, were also discussed. Sitharaman, acknowledging Maharashtra's financial discipline, assured full cooperation. "Maharashtra has maintained strong economic indicators on every front," she said. Finance secretary Anuradha Thakur, chief economic advisor to the CM Praveen Pardeshi, and principal secretary Ashwini Bhide attended the meeting. Fadnavis also pushed for a ₹22,490 crore rural road network project covering 14,000 km under the ministry of rural development. These 25-year maintenance-free roads, supported by ADB funding, are expected to ease transportation for farmers. Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan praised the plan and lauded the state's performance in housing schemes. "The central govt has sanctioned a record 30 lakh homes for the state," he noted. At NITI Aayog, Fadnavis discussed projects worth ₹4,326 crore each, including the use of artificial intelligence for non-communicable disease (NCD) screening and bamboo-based industrial clusters. He also presented progress updates on the ₹8,651 crore Marathwada Water Grid, the Damanganga-Godavari river-link project, and a skill development plan linking ITIs with private industry. The commission assured timely clearances. "Despite the Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management (FRBM) limit of 25%, Maharashtra has stayed within 18%," said CEO BVR Subrahmanyam, commending the state's fiscal prudence.

Gurgaon: In an infrastructure boost to south Haryana, the Centre has decided to develop a new 45km four-lane National Highway from Nuh to Ferozepur Jhirka and Alwar on Rajasthan border and issued tenders for the Rs 325-crore project, which is expected to cut travel time and enhance road safety in the region. The govt has set a two-year completion target for the ambitious project. On completion, the highway is expected to reduce travel time to Rajasthan and tackle safety lapses on a stretch notoriously known as the "bloody highway," where over 2,500 fatalities have been reported in the past 12 years. This development is a result of persistent advocacy and public pressure over the years. The Mewat RTI Manch, a local activist group, has been at the forefront of this campaign since 2013, conducting hunger strikes and protests. Also, the group has filed a petition signed by over 20,000 residents to draw attention to the perils of existing narrow roads and demand immediate corrective measures. Initially, a ₹186-crore proposal was approved in 2019, but the project was put on hold following construction plan for Delhi-Mumbai Expressway through the area. Now, with a renewed focus and an increased budget, the Centre has moved forward with a revised estimate of ₹325 crore. AIADMK can't stomach DMK's popularity: Nehru
Trichy: AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami 's 'Uruttugalum Thiruttugalum' campaign must be referring to 10 years of his party's govt, said municipal administration minister K N Nehru in Trichy on Friday. In a rebuttal to the opposition leader's campaign, the DMK principal secretary said AIADMK is unable to stomach the increasing popularity of the DMK govt. Nehru was inspecting the Ungaludan Stalin camp organised for wards 51 and 52 at a wedding hall in Bhima Nagar. "He (EPS) may be referring to the bluffs of the 10 years of the previous AIADMK governance. AIADMK is scared of our new members' enrolment camps and approaching the court. They failed to utilise the opportunity given by the people during their term, but we are fulfilling our promises," he said. Nehru said that welfare schemes are being implemented one after the other by the DMK govt. "Our CM writes letters every week to the Union govt seeking funds for the state for Jal Jeevan scheme, school education department, and MGNREGA schemes," he added. Around 900 applications were submitted in the camp from two wards to avail the monthly financial assistance scheme for women family heads.
