Prime Minister Narendra Modi places Constitution above all: Gujarat chief minister
Ahmedabad: Speaking at an event to mark 50 years since the Emergency was imposed in the country, chief minister Bhupendra Patel termed the Emergency as a "blemished event" in the country's history.
He said that
Prime Minister Narendra Modi
placed the Constitution above everything else in the country's interest. A programme was organised in Gandhinagar to mark 'Samvidhan Hatya Divas' on Wednesday.
Speaking at the event, Patel recalled that the values of the Constitution were undermined and emphasised the need for current and future generations to be aware of this blot and to uphold the honour and dignity of the Constitution.
The CM said that during his tenure as chief minister, Narendra Modi honoured the Constitution on the occasion of its 60th anniversary by placing it on an elephant's back during the 'Constitution Pride Yatra'.

Additionally, the govt abrogated Article 35-A and Article 370 from the Constitution for the benefit of citizens.
During the programme, retired Gujarat high court Justice Ravikumar Tripathi provided information on the Indian Constitution, the fundamental rights of citizens enshrined in it, past amendments, misuse of various articles, and the Emergency imposed in 1975.
The CM and other dignitaries also watched a documentary and a skit based on the Emergency.

Iran could enrich uranium again despite strikes, says International atomic body
The head of the UN's nuclear watchdog has warned that Iran could begin enriching uranium again within just a few months, despite recent US-led airstrikes aimed at crippling Tehran's nuclear Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), told CBS News on Sunday that while the strikes had caused significant damage to Iran's nuclear infrastructure, they had not eliminated the country's capabilities or knowledge speaking, one cannot claim that everything has disappeared and there is nothing there," Grossi said in the interview on Face the Nation. 'The capacities they have are there. They can have, you know, in a matter of months a few cascades of centrifuges spinning and producing enriched uranium, or less than that.' The comments raise questions over the effectiveness of the US and Israeli strikes on key nuclear sites in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. US President Donald Trump has claimed that the attacks "completely and totally obliterated" Iran's nuclear Grossi acknowledged that Iran's ability to convert and enrich uranium had been significantly set back, he emphasized that the core problem remains: Iran's technical expertise is intact."Iran is a very sophisticated country in terms of nuclear technology," Grossi noted. "So you cannot disinvent this. You cannot undo the knowledge that you have or the capacities that you have."advertisementThe strikes followed a 12-day air war ignited by Israeli attacks on Iranian sites earlier this month. The United States joined the campaign shortly afterward, citing the need to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear however, insists its nuclear programme is solely for peaceful purposes. But Western powers remain skeptical, mainly after reports emerged that Iran may have moved some of its highly enriched uranium stockpiles before the asked about those reports, Grossi said the whereabouts of the material remains unclear. "So some could have been destroyed as part of the attack, but some could have been moved," he said.- EndsWith inputs from ReutersMust Watch

Govt plans to get Musthaq to launch Dasara to counter RSS rhetoric on Constitution
Bengaluru: The state govt is actively considering naming International Booker Prize-winning Kannada writer Banu Mushtaq as the chief guest to inaugurate this year's Dasara festivities in Mysuru, hoping to hit several targets with the decision. If selected, Banu would be the first Muslim to inaugurate the state festival since renowned Kannada poet KS Nisar Ahmed in 2017 — during Siddaramaiah's earlier tenure as CM. Sources say there is also a proposal to have Deepa Bhasti, the translator of Banu's award-winning short story collection Heart Lamp, join her in inaugurating the festivities. Senior Congress functionaries say the move could carry a significant political message. "Choosing Banu would make an eloquent political statement in favour of secularism," said a senior functionary. "It would be a fitting counter to Sangh's rhetoric," said another Congress functionary. He is likely to take a decision in a week or two. Amarnath confirmed to reporters that Banu is being considered. She said a joint inauguration by the author and translator would be "a great honour and recognition of women achievers". "I hope Siddaramaiah would see the significance of choosing Banu," she said. "No one is more suitable to inaugurate the Dasara this year than Banu, as she brought accolades to Kannada at the world forum." Amarnath said choosing Mushtaq would send out a "healthy message" especially at a time when "society needs values, and communal harmony should be upheld". "It is even more significant now since some forces are posing a threat to these values," she said. "They are talking of removing the words 'secular' and 'socialist' from the Preamble of the Constitution." Musthaq was unfazed by the political chatter surrounding her potential nomination but said: "I am yet to hear from the govt on this," she told TOI. Meanwhile, Kannada Sahitya Parishat president Mahesh Joshi said Banu has agreed to preside over the Sahitya Sammelana, to be held in Ballari in Dec, though she has yet to formally confirm. "As for presiding over the Kannada Sahitya Sammelana, I am happy about it," Mushtaq said. "I have said that it is my duty to work for the Kannada cause. However, I need some time to decide on taking it up, as I want to consider some nuanced issues." Oblivious to the "political hullabaloo", the celebrated author said she remains "open-minded" to the idea of inaugurating Dasara, should the govt extend an invitation. Demolitions: Kejriwal Slams BJP
New Delhi: AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday urged slum dwellers to protest against the BJP-led govt's demolition drives and reject both the BJP and Congress in future elections. Addressing a protest at Jantar Mantar, Kejriwal said, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi said 'Jahan Jhuggi, Wahan Makan', but what he meant was 'Jahan Jhuggi, Wahan Maidan'. His promises are false, and I urge you not to fall for them in future." He alleged that the Rekha Gupta-led Delhi govt has "ruined" the city in just five months. "We left a perfectly fine Delhi. But these people ruined it. There are long power cuts, school fees have been hiked, and their ministers and MLAs are busy looting Delhi," he charged. Calling for unity among slum dwellers, Kejriwal said, "There are 40 lakh slum dwellers. If you take to the roads, they will be forced to stop the demolitions." He added, "The Anna movement started from Jantar Mantar and removed the Congress from power. From here, a new movement will begin, and BJP's hold on power will also be shaken." But after the BJP came to power, the same things are happening again," he said. Kejriwal also accused the BJP of targeting AAP leaders with FIRs. "They lodged FIRs against Manish Sisodia, Satyendar Jain, and Saurabh Bharadwaj. Stop this game of FIRs and work for the people," he said. Sisodia and Jain are facing an anti-corruption branch (ACB) probe into alleged irregularities in classroom construction, while Bharadwaj and Jain were recently booked for delays in hospital projects. He said the BJP has a "10-engine govt" controlling various agencies, yet worsened Delhi's condition in five months. "I told you they will break your jhuggis, you didn't believe… didn't they break your jhuggis? Wait for some time, they will stop your free electricity as well," he said. "In our 10 years, we never displaced slum dwellers. This govt didn't even wait a year—within five months, they started evictions," he added. "People who cook in homes, drivers, security guards, the milkman, autowallahs come from jhuggis... if you will destroy their homes, then Delhi would not run even for a day," he added. AAP leader Atishi said, "This govt promised homes, but is instead evicting people from settlements it used for seeking votes." Bharadwaj added, "Whenever slums are demolished or colonies labelled illegal, it is AAP that stands with the people."
