India calls for urgent global action to protect ocean, commits to early ratification of High Seas Treaty
NEW DELHI: India on Tuesday called for urgent global action on ocean health at the 3rd UN Ocean Conference in Nice, France, with Union minister of earth sciences Jitendra Singh urging the international community to invest in innovation, ratify the 'High Seas Treaty', and finalise a legally binding agreement to end plastic pollution.
'The ocean is our shared heritage and responsibility,' said Singh, expressing India's readiness to work with all stakeholders - govts, the private sector, civil society, and indigenous communities - to ensure a sustainable ocean future. He was delivering the country's statement at the conference.
One of the core objectives of the five-day conference, which is co-hosted by France and Costa Rica, is to help bring into force the landmark 'High Seas Treaty' - Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement - adopted in 2023 to safeguard life in international waters through long-term protection of marine biodiversity in the high seas.
Once ratified by 60 countries, it will become law of the sea on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction. Fifty members (49 countries and the EU) have already submitted their ratifications, while 15 others, including India, committed to doing it soon, paving the way for its coming into force in the next four months.
Singh, while addressing the conference, also highlighted the multiple measures being taken by India in sync with its commitment to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14: Life Below Water, and outlined how the country's initiatives are aimed at reversing ocean degradation through science, innovation, and inclusive partnerships.
He shared the progress made on India's Deep Ocean Mission and its 'Samudrayaan' project, which is expected to deploy the country's first manned submersible by 2026. The project aims to explore ocean depths up to 6,000 meters and is seen as a major leap in India's scientific capability.
A nationwide ban on single-use plastic items of high littering potential, implementation of over $80 billion worth of 'Blue Economy' projects, supporting a legally binding global plastics treaty, and the launch of the 'SAHAV' digital ocean data portal are some of the initiatives which found prominence in the minister's speech at the global forum.
The SAHAV portal - a GIS-based decision support system - works as a tool to empower policymakers, researchers, and communities with real-time spatial data, enabling smarter planning and stronger marine resilience.
Singh also spoke of expanding India's marine protected areas, which now cover 6.6% of the Exclusive Economic Zone, contributing to global biodiversity goals. He underlined that India has integrated ocean-based climate actions into its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.

New Delhi: The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) on Thursday gave the go-ahead for 10 proposals to buy military hardware, including missiles and electronic warfare systems, worth approximately Rs 1.05 lakh crore through indigenous sourcing. The DAC works under the chairmanship of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. The DAC gave its "Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for the procurement of Armoured Recovery Vehicles, Electronic Warfare System, Integrated Common Inventory Management System for the Tri-Services and Surface-to-Air Missiles. These procurements will provide higher mobility, effective air defence, better supply chain management, and augment the operational preparedness of the Armed Forces", the Defence Ministry said in a statement. AoNs were also given for procurement of Moored Mines, Mine Counter Measure Vessels, Super Rapid Gun Mount and Submersible Autonomous Vessels. These procurements will enable the mitigation of potential risks posed to the naval and merchant vessels. To provide further impetus to indigenous design and development, AoNs were accorded under the Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured) category, the statement said. India's indigenous defence production has surged to an all-time high of Rs 1.46 lakh crore, with exports increasing to a record Rs 24,000 crore in 2024-25, according to Mr Singh. "Our defence production, which was only Rs 43,000 crore 10 to 11 years ago, has now crossed a record figure of Rs 1,46,000 crore, with the private sector's contribution of over Rs 32,000 crore. Our defence exports, which were around Rs 600-700 crore 10 years ago, have surpassed a record figure of Rs 24,000 crore today," the minister stated in his address at the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) annual summit recently. He described the Make In India policy as crucial for security and prosperity, stating that the use of indigenous systems during 'Operation Sindoor' has proved that India has the power to penetrate any armour of the enemy. "Our weapons, systems, sub-systems, components, and services are reaching around 100 countries. Over 16,000 MSMEs, associated with the defence sector, have become the backbone of the supply chain. These companies are not only strengthening our self-reliance journey, but are also providing employment to lakhs of people," the minister said. He said the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme execution model will open an opportunity for the private sector to participate in a mega defence project along with public sector companies for the first time, further bolstering the Make In India drive in the defence industry, he added.

Ex-MP Dhananjay Singh, 3 aides acquitted in double murder case

(File Photo) The Crime Branch–Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID) of the Uttar Pradesh Police had filed a chargesheet against Singh and his three associates after a three-year-long investigation. The police had named Dhanjay Singh along with Ashutosh Singh, Puneet Singh, and Sunit Singh as accused in the Belav Ghat double murder case, which took place on April 1, 2010, under Kerakat police station limits in Jaunpur. According to the FIR, two Dalit men, Sanjay Nishad and Nandlal Nishad, were shot dead around 5:15am allegedly following a dispute over toll tax near the Belav Ghat barrier. Initially, the local police gave a clean chit to the accused, but the case was later transferred to the CB-CID, which eventually filed a charge sheet. It was alleged that the murders were linked to a contract-related rivalry. 'After reviewing all the evidence, the court of ADJ Mohammed Shariq Siddiqui acquitted Dhananjay Singh and the three other accused on Thursday. Earlier, the statements of all four were recorded in court, where they pleaded not guilty. The court examined 28 witnesses during the trial,' confirmed Lal Bahadur Pal, district government counsel (DGC), criminal, Jaunpur. Reacting to the verdict, Dhananjay Singh said, 'I always had faith in the judiciary, and finally, after 15 years, I have got justice. The entire case was political, and I was falsely implicated.' He claimed he was a sitting MP at the time of the incident and had attended a meeting, which was later misrepresented to frame him. Singh also alleged that he was expelled from his party, barred from entering the district, and that Section 144 was imposed in the area. He reiterated that the case was politically motivated, and that some individuals wanted him jailed ahead of the 2012 U.P. elections. Over 40 criminal cases have been registered against Dhananjay Singh in various places, including Jaunpur, Lucknow, and Delhi. He was declared an absconder in 1998, with a ₹ 50,000 reward announced for information leading to his arrest.
