Small hatchbacks don't come much more striking than the Peugeot 208. The French firm's dinkiest model is six years old now, but one look at its distinctive and upmarket styling and you wouldn't think it. It's a pretty premium-feeling car as a whole that comes with a remarkably low price tag. Advertisement - Article continues below
How low? Well, how does less than £180 a month sound? Lease Car UK is offering the high-spec supermini for £175.53 right now; a £2,454.36 initial payment is required and it's a two-year agreement.
Mileage is capped at 5,000 a year, but you can nudge this up to a far more flexible 8,000 per annum for less than £18 extra a month.
The GT model was, until recently, the flagship 208, but a new range-topping GT Premium version joined the line-up around a month ago. Mind you, GT spec is not to be sniffed at, and its spec includes: LED headlights with Smartbeam assist, LED rear lights and Peugeot's trademark i-Cockpit with 3D display for the dials. There are also 17-inch diamond-cut alloys, a black roof, plus smart leather-effect and cloth seats with bold lime-green stitching.
The 208 comes with the choice of two mild-hybrid 1.2-litre petrol options, and here you get the most powerful version. With 134bhp, performance is suitably punchy, surprisingly refined and very economical, with more than 50mpg easily achievable.
It may have a GT badge on the C-pillar, but to say it's a sporty driving experience would be a bit of an exaggeration. Still, the 208's small steering wheel and responsive chassis do add up to an enjoyable drive.

EDF will take a 12.5% stake in Sizewell C nuclear power station

But Together Against Sizewell C chair Jenny Kirtley criticised EDF's stakeholder announcement."In what must be seen as a fantastic result for Macron and an extremely poor outcome for the UK, this has allowed the original Sizewell C promoter, EDF, to invest the bare minimum into the project, with the result [that] UK residents will be subsidising French industry and the French government for the next 75 years, during 15 years of construction and 60 years of operation."Stop Sizewell C, another campaign group, added that "such reliance on France for so lengthy and uncertain project delivery undermines UK energy security".The group added: "With much of the expensive 'kit' for Sizewell C being constructed in France, who does this project really benefit?" Responding to the suggestion the decision was not a show of confidence in the UK, a No 10 spokesman said: "Obviously it's a commercial decision for EDF, but it's fully consistent with their previously stated commitment."Of course, we welcome their involvement. We've always known that EDF was looking to take a minority stake in Sizewell's construction, alongside its other important roles in the project."We're in the closing stages of negotiations with other investors [who] will also bring significant experience to Sizewell C." Why experts think a UK wealth tax is ‘naive'

Leading tax lawyer Dan Neidle suggests a wealth tax could detrimentally affect the UK's overall tax revenue, arguing it is arrogant to assume the UK could succeed where other nations have failed. Economists highlight the significant practical challenges of implementing a wealth tax, including complex asset valuation, high administrative costs, and potential liquidity issues for taxpayers. IFS economist Stuart Adam said most developed countries have abandoned annual wealth taxes, with experts advocating for alternative reforms to capital income taxes as more realistic.
