Held in Mumbai and deported by BSF, Bengal couple returns home from Bangladesh
Kolkata: The West Bengal police have helped a couple from the state to return home days after they were declared illegal Bangladeshi immigrants by Maharashtra police and deported to the neighbouring country by the Border Security Force (BSF), police officials said.
'Fazal Mondal, a migrant worker, and his wife Taslima were released by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Monday. We took them home safely,' Ganesh Bain, officer-in-charge of North 24 Parganas district's Bagdah police station, told HT.
Fazal Mondal, a resident of Hariharpur village in Bagdah, went to Karnataka in 2024 with his wife in search of livelihood and the couple moved to the Naya Nagar area in Mumbai five months ago. They were arrested on June 10 and deported to Bangladesh on June 14, Mondal's father Tahajul Mondal told the media on Tuesday.
Tahajul Mondal said: 'My son and daughter-in-law were detained at Naya Nagar police station on June 10 and declared illegal Bangladeshi immigrants although they carried documents such as Aadhar and PAN cards. I contacted the Maharashtra police and sent copies of more documents, including a certificate the health department issued after my son was administered polio vaccine when he was a child.'
'They were arrested only because they speak Bengali which is our mother tongue. Can't people speak their mother tongue?' he said.
'On June 14, a man claiming to be a BGB official called us up and said my son and his wife had been deported and we should seek help from our local administration to get them back. We immediately informed the police and sought help from local Trinamool Congress leaders as well,' Mondal added.
BSF did not comment on the couple.
The couple were released by BGB a day after three migrant workers from Murshidabad district and two from East Burdwan district managed to return to India through the Mekhliganj border outpost in north Bengal's Cooch Behar district. These men were held by Mumbai police on June 12 and handed over to BSF, which deported them on June 14. They, too, claimed that they were arrested after they showed documents such as Aadhar and PAN cards.
After these five men were brought back to India on Monday, HT tried to get official comments from BSF's South Bengal Frontier and the North Bengal Frontier headquarters. Emails and reminder e-mails were sent but there was no response.
The Mira-Bhayander Vasai-Virar (MBVV) police denied allegations that Indian nationals have been pushed to Bangladesh. 'After the arrest of an illegal Bangladeshi national for attacking actor Saif Ali Khan, they had received orders from the Home department to conduct a drive against illegal immigrants staying in the region. Based on these orders, the police had conducted a combing operation, identified and detained several illegal immigrants from the region in the past three months,' said Prakash Gaikwad, deputy commissioner of police, Mira Road.
Meanwhile, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee attacked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Centre over this issue while addressing the state legislative assembly on Monday.
She accused the BJP of launching a 'witch-hunt' against Bengali-speaking Indian citizens in states ruled by the them and labelling these people as Bangladeshi without taking into account valid documents.

'It has been requested that a swift investigation be conducted into the matter and that legal action be taken against the concerned individual. This step is not only important for her but also for all those girls who fall victim to such deceitful relationships.' Delhi Police apprehended 18 illegal Bangladeshi nationals in Ashok Vihar
New Delhi [India], June 28 (ANI): In a joint combing operation by the Foreigners Cell of the North-West District Police, 18 illegal Bangladeshi nationals, including five transgenders, were apprehended from the Ashok Vihar area of Delhi. Police also recovered seven smartphones installed with the banned IMO app, which the accused were allegedly using to stay in touch with their families in Bangladesh. During the operation, the team strategically cordoned off the target area and conducted a comprehensive verification drive. Approximately 100 jhuggis and 150 lanes were thoroughly inspected as part of an intensive combing exercise. During the course of the operation, a suspicious individual was apprehended and subjected to detailed interrogation. Although he initially attempted to mislead the authorities, he eventually confessed to being a Bangladeshi national. Based on the information provided by him, other members of his family were also located and apprehended. In total, 13 individuals, including 10 adults and 3 children, were identified as Bangladeshi nationals residing illegally in the area without valid travel documents, visas, or permits. Their presence constitutes a violation of the Foreigners Act, 1946, as well as other applicable immigration laws. During the operation, the team observed and identified five individuals engaged in begging at various locations who were presenting themselves as transgender women. Upon closer verification, it was found that these individuals had altered their physical appearance to resemble women by using heavy makeup, traditional female attire such as sarees and salwar suits, artificial hair (wigs), bangles, bindis, breast enhancement techniques, and other feminine accessories. Some had also modified their voice and body language to closely mimic female mannerisms. Preliminary interrogation raised doubts regarding their Indian nationality, leading to their apprehension for further inquiry. During detailed questioning, they revealed that they had adopted these disguises and had even undergone minor surgeries and hormonal treatments to alter their sex and appearance in an attempt to evade detection. The misuse of transgender identity by foreign nationals to circumvent legal scrutiny not only obstructs lawful enforcement procedures but also adversely impacts the perception and rights of the genuine transgender community. All the individuals were taken into custody on the spot and shifted to the Foreigners' cell for detailed interrogation and documentation. Tripura needs stronger security due to current situation in Bangladesh: CM
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Saturday exhorted various agencies to enhance security and surveillance in the state, given the current situation in Bangladesh. Tripura is surrounded by Bangladesh on three sides. Therefore, strengthening of security is needed, the chief minister said after inaugurating the state's first cyber police station here. "We all know the present situation in Bangladesh. There is a need to enhance security arrangements. The northeastern state has been made into a corridor for the smuggling of drugs and narcotic items. Infiltration from across the border is also another problem," he said. "There are reports that a section of people go close to the international border (Indian side) and have conversations with people living on the other side of the international border. The situation may turn ugly once AI-enabled 5G service is available," he said. Referring to the shift from conventional warfare during 'Operation Sindoor', the chief minister said cannons and the presence of forces were not seen in the conflict (With Pakistan). "Modern warfare requires a click," he said. "A mobile phone has become more dangerous than AK-47 rifles. Advanced technology has changed the form of battle, conflict or war," he said. Terming cybercrime a kind of shadow warfare, he said the security forces need to fight the criminals digitally to prevent fraudulent activities. Emphasising awareness among the people about cyber fraud activities, Saha said the security agencies are also required to upgrade their skills to foil fraudulent activities on digital platforms. The Director General of Police (DGP), Anurag Dhankar, urged the people to contact the newly inaugurated cyber police station if they encounter any incident related to cybercrime. The cyber police station is located in Agartala's AD Nagar and it will deal with all cyber-related crimes across the state. The Centre has given Rs 45 lakh out of the total outlay of Rs 5 crore.
