Stalin urges centre's intervention for release of 7 fishermen held by Sri Lanka
M K Stalin
has urged the Union government to take urgent diplomatic steps to secure the release of seven Rameswaram fishermen apprehended by the Sri Lankan navy in the early hours of Sunday.
In a letter to Union external affairs minister S Jaishankar, Stalin expressed concern over the recurring arrests of Tamil Nadu fishermen and called for immediate measures to end the continued harassment of those operating in the Palk Strait.
"I urge the Union government to engage all available diplomatic channels to bring an end to these continued apprehensions. I further request that urgent and effective steps be taken to secure the release of all detained fishermen and their boats at the earliest," he said.
Stalin also highlighted that 50 fishermen and 232 Tamil Nadu fishing vessels remain in Sri Lankan custody this year, compounding the economic and emotional hardship faced by their families.
The latest incident occurred around 2 am on Sunday when a mechanised trawler (IND-TN-10-MM-746), owned by V Isaac Paul of Thangachimadam, was intercepted near Neduntheevu by the Sri Lankan navy. The boat, which had left Rameswaram with valid fishing tokens issued by the fisheries department, was reportedly operating close to the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) when it was seized.

The arrested fishermen were identified as B Ruther, 40, P Edison, 48, K Anbalagan, 45, M Jegadeesh, 42, all from Thangachimadam; A Shanmugam, 56, F Dalvin Raj, 42 from Rameswaram; and M Sakthivel, 43, from Keerathurai in Madurai. They were initially detained at Kankesanthurai port and later remanded to judicial custody in Jaffna prison.
In a separate incident, the same morning, another mechanised boat (IND-TN-10-MM-1040), owned by Maria Seeron of Rameswaram, reportedly sustained significant damage after being hit by a Sri Lankan navy patrol vessel between Katchatheevu and Neduntheevu.
However, the seven fishermen on board, Stalin, Muneeswaran, Viyakulam, Columbus, Nagesh, Stephen, and Sarath Kumar, escaped unhurt and returned safely to the Rameswaram jetty.
In the past two weeks alone, aside from this latest arrest, 15 Indian fishermen have been remanded to judicial custody in two separate incidents, with their custody extended after initial hearings.
J R Jesu Raja, leader of the Rameswaram Fishermen Association, condemned the arrests, stating, "The fishermen had no intention to violate international boundaries. The Sri Lankan navy is harassing them under the pretext of enforcement. One of the boats was even damaged while being chased." He appealed to both the Union and state governments to take a firm stand to ensure the safety of Indian fishermen.

Robert Vadra appears before ED in Sanjay Bhandari case
NEW DELHI: Robert Vadra, the businessman husband of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, appeared before the Enforcement Directorate on Monday for his questioning in connection with the UK-based arms consultant Sanjay Bhandari linked money laundering case, official sources said. The businessman's statement will be recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), they said. The 56-year-old Vadra was called by the agency to depose last month but he had sought deferment of his summons as he had to travel abroad. He is being investigated by the central probe agency in three different money laundering cases, including this one. The two others pertain to alleged irregularities in land deals. The 63-year-old Bhandari fled to London in 2016 soon after the Income-Tax department raided him in Delhi. He was recently declared a fugitive economic offender by a Delhi court. A UK court last month refused the Indian government's application seeking permission to appeal in Britain's Supreme Court against the discharge of Bhandari in an extradition case against him, virtually ruling out chances of his being brought to the country to face the law. The ED had filed a chargesheet in this case in 2023 alleging Bhandari "acquired" the 12, Bryanston Square house located in London in 2009 and got it renovated "as per the directions of Vadra and the funds for renovation were provided by Robert Vadra." Vadra has denied that he owned any London property directly or indirectly. Terming these charges as a political witch hunt against him, he has said that he was being "hounded and harassed" to subserve political ends.

Family of Jaipur man abducted in Mali asks Union Government to expedite efforts to trace him
The family of Prakash Joshi (61) from Rajasthan's Jaipur, who is among the three Indian nationals abducted in West African country Mali on July 1, 2025, has requested the Union Government to intensify efforts for his release. Suman Joshi, wife of Prakash Joshi, said he joined as general manager at Diamond Cement factory in Mali on June 5. She spoke to him last on June 30. "He told me that he was not feeling well. I asked him to return home as soon as possible. After this conversation, his phone was not reachable. I thought there was some network issue but on July 2, my daughter got information about his abduction," she told PTI. Mr. Joshi was abducted by armed assailants on July 1 morning from the factory premises. The factory officials telephoned his daughter Chitra Joshi the next day and informed about the incident. "We are in touch with the Ministry of External Affairs. We demand that the Government of India intensify efforts to secure his safe release. We have no idea where he is and in what condition," Ms. Suman said. She said the company officials opened his room on Saturday and found his passport and other belongings. "Initially, they were saying that my husband is safe. But now they say that they have no idea about his whereabouts," she said. The family said it has no information about his location or what the terrorists demand. They have also appealed to Union Minister and Jodhpur MP Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and other leaders from the State to intervene into the matter. On July 2, the Ministry of External Affairs issued a press statement and said a group of armed assailants carried out a coordinated attack on the factory premises in Mali and forcibly took three Indian nationals as hostages. It said that many military and government installations at multiple locations of western and central Mali were attacked by terrorists on July 1. "The Embassy of India in Bamako is in close and constant communication with the relevant authorities of the Government of Mali, local law enforcement agencies, as well as the management of Diamond Cement Factory. The Mission is also in touch with family members of the abducted Indian nationals," the release had said.
