PM Anwar's diplomacy showcases Islamic peace values in ASEAN
IKIM director-general Assoc Prof Datuk Dr Mohamed Azam Mohamed Adil, in praising Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's success in mediating a ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia on Monday, said the achievement symbolises Malaysia's ongoing commitment to regional unity and stability.
Mohamed Azam, in a statement, said Anwar's wisdom in bringing the two conflicting parties together reflects Islamic leadership that upholds justice, peace and human dignity, while also demonstrating the effectiveness of diplomacy grounded in patience, wisdom and firmness in addressing conflict.
'Malaysia's success in reconciling the two parties shows the world that true strength lies not in military might, but in moral principles, ethics and transparency in managing conflict. This is a core teaching in Islam.
'IKIM calls on all Malaysians to express gratitude for this achievement and to value peace as the foundation for development and well-being. IKIM remains committed to promoting Islamic values that advocate peace, understanding, and respect among all people,' he said.
As an institution under the Prime Minister's Department dedicated to promoting a true understanding of Islam, IKIM believes this achievement can serve as an example to the international community on how diplomacy based on ethics and values can help resolve longstanding disputes.
Thailand and Cambodia have a history of diplomatic friction over an 817-kilometre undemarcated stretch of their shared border. Tensions escalated on May 28 following a skirmish near the disputed Preah Vihear area, which resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier. - Bernama

Rumours of attack on Cambodia untrue, says Thai army
BANGKOK: The Royal Thai Army (RTA) on Sunday denied rumours on social media claiming it had ordered the evacuation of residents in Surin province in preparation for an attack on Cambodia. RTA spokesman Major General Winthai Suvaree refuted the claims, which he said originated from a social media post allegedly shared by former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, citing a statement attributed to Cambodia's Defence Ministry spokesperson. Winthai said the post falsely alleged that the Thai army had ordered a nighttime evacuation of civilians and was preparing to launch an offensive against Cambodia. He confirmed there was no truth to the allegations and stated unequivocally that no evacuation orders had been issued in Surin or any other area. "The public is urged to rely on official information sources and not be misled by unverified posts or disinformation that could cause public panic," he said in a statement on Sunday. He said that while the Royal Thai Army remains fully committed to the current ceasefire agreement, Thailand continues to maintain operational readiness to respond to any unforeseen developments. Thai and Cambodian defence ministers are scheduled to hold the General Border Committee (GBC) meeting in Kuala Lumpur from Aug 4 to 7, following a ceasefire deal brokered by Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on July 28. The two neighbouring countries have been in conflict over their 817km border, with disputes dating back to 1907. The latest conflict began with a brief skirmish between Thai and Cambodian troops on May 28, which escalated into armed clashes on July 24.

King's historic state visit to Russia underscores deepening bilateral ties, says Ambassador
MOSCOW: The state visit by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, to Russia from Aug 5-10 has been described as the highlight of the diplomatic ties between the two countries, said Malaysia's Ambassador to Russia Datuk Cheong Loon Lai. He said the visit is the highest-level ever made and the first by a Malaysian head of state to Russia since diplomatic relations were established in April 1967. "His Majesty's state visit, at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir V. Putin, is a recognition of the five decades of diplomatic ties with Malaysia, which was among the earliest Asean countries to establish ties with the then Soviet Union. "This visit also reflects the crucial role of the institution of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in the context of international relations,' he told Bernama here on Sunday (Aug 1) in conjunction with Sultan Ibrahim's state visit. Cheong said the visit will begin in Moscow, where His Majesty is scheduled to hold an official meeting with Putin at the Grand Kremlin Palace. Both leaders are expected to discuss potential cooperation in the fields of trade and investment, higher education, technology and innovation, people-to-people ties, digital transformation, agriculture and food security, as well as regional and international issues. "This highest-level visit will certainly have a high impact in increasing the momentum and positive trend of bilateral relations between Malaysia and Russia. "It sends the message that Malaysia is serious and committed to efforts to strengthen and improve bilateral relations with Russia in all fields, particularly strategic cooperation and people-to-people ties,' he said. Sultan Ibrahim is scheduled to arrive in Moscow on Tuesday (Aug 5) and will be accorded a state welcome ceremony at the Kremlin on Wednesday (Aug 6), before holding an official meeting with Putin and attending a state banquet hosted by the Russian President. His Majesty is also scheduled to receive an audience from the Russian Automotive Technology Development Company as well as the Tochka Kipeniya Technology and Innovation Hub. On Friday (Aug 8), Sultan Ibrahim will travel to Kazan, the fifth largest city in Russia, to receive an audience from the Rais (Head) of the Republic of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov, at the Kazan Kremlin. Both parties are expected to discuss potential collaboration in the trade, investment, halal industry sectors and agricultural technology. His Majesty is also scheduled to attend a reception ceremony hosted by Minnikhanov and visit the Kazan Helicopter Plant to observe the manufacturing operations of civilian, defence and rescue helicopters. Russia is currently Malaysia's ninth-largest trading partner among European countries and 28th globally, with bilateral trade valued at RM11.46bil (US$2.48bil) in 2024. MAIPs honours Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra's 25 years of leadership
KANGAR: Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail has marked 25 years of leadership as the Raja Muda of Perlis, making significant contributions to the development of religion, social welfare, and the economy of the ummah. In a statement issued today, the Perlis Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIPs) highlighted His Royal Highness' notable achievements, including his humanitarian missions, educational collaborations, and efforts to promote religious diplomacy. "His work has had a lasting impact, particularly in strengthening the zakat and waqf management systems and enhancing the role of mosques as community hubs. "Under His Royal Highness' leadership, MAIPs has emerged as a progressive and authoritative religious institution. His leadership is a symbol of a monarchy that is close to the people and visionary in developing Perlis," read the statement. Most recently, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra led MAIPs' humanitarian missions to Kenya and Rwanda, forging strategic collaborations with international Islamic education institutions. One of his significant projects includes introducing UniSIRAJ (Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin International Islamic University) and promoting the harmonious and humanitarian values of Islam. MAIPs also celebrated Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra's milestone during the Takrim 25 Tahun Pemasyhuran (25th Anniversary of His Royal Highness' Ascension as Perlis Raja Muda) which coincided with the 2026-2030 consultative dialogue on the direction of state's Islamic affairs here on Friday. The anniversary celebration symbolised the highest appreciation for His Royal Highness' leadership over the past two and a half decades. His dedication to guiding the ummah, upholding religion, and serving the people of Perlis was honoured through a special ceremony, which included a trilingual poetry performance titled Ungkap Kata Puji Mahkota – حملة المدحِ. In his speech during the dialogue, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening the direction of Islamic affairs in Perlis for the 2026–2030 period. His focus will remain on ensuring Perlis remains a harmonious, knowledgeable, and prosperous state through an integrated and impactful approach. "This Takrim ceremony not only reflects on His Royal Highness' 25-year leadership journey, but also serves as a renewed pledge to continue the struggle for blessings, justice, and the well-being of the ummah," said MAIPs, adding that prayers for His Royal Highness's continued leadership and divine blessings were made. Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra was officially installed as Raja Muda of Perlis on Oct 12, 2000, at the Balairong Seri, Istana Arau, following the proclamation of his father, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail, as Raja of Perlis on April 16 of the same year. Since then, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra has carried the responsibility of being the heir to the Perlis throne and the president of MAIPs, advising the Raja of Perlis on Islamic affairs and Malay customs. – Bernama
