Jane Austen Wrecked My Life review – witty, well-played French comedy in a Bridget Jones vein

The Guardian11-06-2025
It is a truth universally acknowledged that Jane Austen has inspired more romcoms than any other author – and nearly all of them feature a modern take on an Austen protagonist, a new Lizzie Bennet or Emma Woodhouse. But this funny and smart French comedy instead gives us a 21st-century Jane Austen. British-French actor Camille Rutherford is terrific as Agathe, an aspiring novelist working in a Paris bookshop who wins a place on a Jane Austen writing retreat run by the author's descendants.
'I'm not living in the right century!' Agathe wails to her best friend and colleague Félix (Pablo Pauly). She's not into dating apps ('I don't want Uber sex!'). But she does have chemistry with Félix (he's a player, but not at Wickham levels of caddishness), and it's Félix who secretly submits Agathe's writing to a Jane Austen society. The comedy takes a bit of an IQ dip when the film crosses the Channel and the dialogue switches to English. Still, it glides along on Rutherford's performance as Agathe – witty, warm, keenly observant, a bit clumsy and Bridget Jones-ish, but never, not even for a moment, cringy.
On the retreat, Agathe takes an instant loathing to Austen's great-great-great-nephew Oliver (Charlie Anson); he's a professor of modern literature who loftily proclaims that Austen is overrated. Judgmental, arrogant, and altogether up himself, Oliver is the film's Mr Darcy – though played with too much Hugh Grant to take seriously. You don't have to be an Austen fan to enjoy this film, but it helps. Agathe's dilemma between Oliver and Félix is classic Austen – but Agathe's real discovery is not love, but her writing voice. And that's the point the film makes without trying too hard: new century, same self-pressure and doubt. Here's Agathe on impostor syndrome. 'No – I'm a genuine impostor!'
Jane Austen Wrecked My Life is in UK cinemas from 13 June.

From delays to 'sub-par' performances with barely any singing - insiders reveal what's really going on with Justin Timberlake's world tour

Justin Timberlake 's world tour has been mired in controversy since his DWAI arrest in the Hamptons, where he made headlines when he told the officer, 'This is going to ruin the tour.' Since his much-publicized brush with the law in Sag Harbor, Timberlake's tour has been plagued with a slew of issues, including wardrobe malfunctions, low ticket sales, last-minute cancelations, feuds with his staff, and now, accusations of 'lazy' performances. Earlier in July, an explosive video surfaced of Timberlake, 44, completely losing it on his stage crew in the middle of his set at England's Lytham Festival. The viral clip showed the pop star trying to keep his cool after sound issues disrupted his performance of Cry Me a River. Timberlake seemingly had a meltdown, and launched into a furious tirade before storming away from his stunned team. But that's not the end of his touring woes. Now, the pop superstar is facing backlash from his fans for his tour stops in Romania and Ireland as they accuse him of a 'lazy' lip sync and demand that he's canceled for wasting his fans money. Daily Mail can exclusively reveal the drama behind his controversial concerts... and why his wife Jessica Biel is pleading with him to give up touring amid the brutal backlash. One insider told the Daily Mail that the SexyBack singer is 'in a rut' amid his flailing tour and desperately 'needs to do something new.' After he played Romania, a viral TikTok received 460,000 likes after a fan who paid 'a lot of money' to see him called him 'an absolute disappointment.' The Social Network star was late getting onstage, and then apparently only sang about five words of each song, according to concert-goers. He also wore glasses and a hat, so the audience couldn't see him, leading many to walk out in anger. 'You can't be singing two songs and then taking a break,' the content creator said, calling his behavior 'rude' and 'disrespectful,' before asking him to 'rethink' the concept behind his tour. The 'lackluster' performance was so embarrassing that multiple fans demanded a refund. In Dublin, his performance was much the same, as showcased by videos of Timberlake dropping the mic and simply walking around the stage lazily, without doing the dance moves he's known for. The same insider divulged that Timberlake 'wants to create new music and to do something he hasn't done yet' but feels stuck singing the same old songs he's been performing for decades, leaving him unmotivated. While there have been murmurs that he would reunite with his boy band NSYNC, it has yet to come to fruition. The reunion rumors reached a fever pitch as their former competitors the Backstreet Boys reunited at the Las Vegas Sphere as part of a historic residency. In fact, fans online begged Timberlake to rejoin his former boy band, joking that if he wanted to sing so little during his recent tour dates, he should at least have the others join him onstage. 'It's embarrassing how he's been basically doing karaoke,' the insider agreed. 'He knows that he's lost his mojo and he really wants it back.' A separate source weighed in on the state of his marriage, and how the tour has been leading to issues with his actress wife. The couple share two children, Silas, 10, and Phineas, four. 'Jessica thinks Justin has aged years since he started The Forget Tomorrow World Tour last April,' the insider claimed. While the tour is set to end on July 30, with stops left in Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkey, Biel, 43, has seen 'how it has taken its toll on him, not just physically but emotionally.' Timberlake's devoted wife has stood by him amid multiple high-profile controversies, including in 2019, when he was caught holding hands with actress Alisha Wainwright during a night out in New Orleans. Now, Biel is worried that he's 'taken on way too much,' with the insider adding that 'he's no longer a twentysomething who can fly around the world doing concert after concert.' While Timberlake previously reigned supreme in the pop world, he's been met with lackluster sales and even worse reviews throughout the tour. Some locations have even dropped tickets to embarrassingly low prices while he's also performed to half full venues. It hasn't helped Timberlake's case that he's been forced to cancel a number of concerts with short notice, leaving fans fuming after they spent money and in some cases even traveled to the shows before getting the news that he wasn't taking the stage. In February, the Cry Me a River singer canceled the final show on his U.S. tour at Columbus, Ohio's Nationwide Arena Thursday, claiming he was sick. The shock announcement came only four months after he canceled his October 23 concert at the same venue amid a bout with laryngitis and bronchitis. It's not just his fans that are upset. The insider spilled that one reason Timberlake has been upset is because 'ticket sales haven't been as buoyant as he'd hoped.' 'He's become short tempered both on and off stage,' the source divulged.

Collapse of fashion label The Vampire's Wife investigated

The fallout from the closure of a cult fashion brand worn by royalty and celebrities remains unresolved as investigations continue into events leading to its collapse. The Vampire's Wife was launched by Susie Bick, the former supermodel and wife of the musician Nick Cave. The brand's Falconetti dress was worn by the Princess of Wales for her official portrait alongside Prince William, completed by Jamie Coreth in 2022. Other customers included the actors Jennifer Aniston and Rachel Weisz, the model Kate Moss, and singers Florence Welch and Kylie Minogue. Harry Styles, the singer, and Brad Pitt, the actor, have the label's custom-made tote bags. The company went into administration in July last year after receiving a tax bill from HM Revenue & Customs, which was owed more than £700,000. The administrator's accounts showed that although the company had £852,000 in a bank account, its total estimated financial deficiency was £1.18 has already settled an outstanding bill from a financing company recorded as being owed £600,000 after it called in his personal guarantee. The winding up of a company normally ends within 12 months, but the administrators have been given more time after saying they are investigating the brand's affairs prior to its collapse. The administrators stated in their most recent report: 'Initial assessment of the company's records suggested that there could be a matter that might lead to recoveries for the insolvent estate and thus further investigations were considered necessary.' Bick, 58, launched the label in 2014 and named it after an unfinished novel written by her Iovine, co-founder of Interscope Records and Beats Electronics, made a significant investment in the company in 2019. Bick's son, Arthur, died aged 15 in a fall from a cliff near Brighton after taking LSD in 2015. Cave's album, Ghosteen, was written in the aftermath. Bick announced the closure of the fashion label in an Instagram post in May last year, writing: 'I wish to thank my extended family at The Vampire's Wife who helped me create such beautiful things.' Cave, 67, later wrote on social media: 'The Vampire's Wife was not just a clothing company, it was a pure and necessary articulation of the grief that Susie felt in the wake of the death of our son, Arthur. 'The Vampire's Wife was Susie's Ghosteen … Susie's dresses were an attempt to give her grief form by throwing fabric over an invisible boy, as an act of love, an act of mercy, and an act of contrition… 'The clothes Susie created were objects of devotion, sacred things that will live on regardless of the brand's fortunes.'

Rory McIlroy caught in wild booze-fueled partying in Saint-Tropez as he brags to fans about Masters victory

Rory McIlroy appears to be soaking up some well-deserved time off after he was spotted swapping the links for the French Riviera in some booze-fueled partying this week. While the Northern Irishman failed to best Scottie Scheffler at The Open on his home turf last week, McIlroy did manage to finally seal the career Grand Slam with a long-awaited triumph at The Masters earlier this year. And it appears that the 35-year-old is still in party mode as he was caught enjoying some boozy celebrations one week on from the final major championship of the year. With major season behind him, McIlroy was caught letting loose at a Saint-Tropez beach club, according to a TikTok video shared by a fan. And the five-time major winner couldn't resist a humble brag when the fan decided to ask him, 'Where's the Green Jacket?' The fan first attempted to shout to McIlroy over the loud thumping music before typing out his question to the golfer on his phone. McIlroy immediately lit up when he spotted the message, pointing to the supporter and letting out a laugh. The PGA Tour star, who clutched a glass of white wine in his hand, pried himself away from the dancefloor and made his way over to the fan. McIlroy, who cut a relaxed figure in a black button-down shirt, swim trunks and a backwards white cap, then claimed his Green Jacket was 'on the yacht' before sharing a laugh with the fan. The golfer then returned to his partying as he was captured bouncing up and down and waving his arm to the beat. Champions of The Masters receive a coveted Green Jacket, however the prestigious prize must be returned to Augusta National Golf Club 12 months after their triumph where it is kept in the clubhouse until their yearly return for the major championship. McIlroy appeared to be partying with some friends as he was seen with his arm wrapped around a man's shoulders. However, there was no sign of wife Erica Stoll in the clip and it is unclear if she and their daughter Poppy have joined McIlroy in the South of France. McIlroy was overcome with emotion in April after he finally won The Masters in a dramatic playoff against Ryder Cup teammate Justin Rose. He finally slayed his demons at Augusta National to complete the career Grand Slam after 11 torturous years of trying. Following a turbulent year off the course, he emerged from a chaotic final round of the 2025 Masters a champion and the Irishman toasted the long-awaited end to his Masters drought with Erica, 37, and Poppy. However, he has failed to come close at any of the remaining majors this year. He finished tied-47th at the PGA Championship in May and tied-19th at the US Open last month, sparking concerns about his struggles. He failed to chase down his current biggest rival Scottie Scheffler at The Open last week, managing to just finish in the top 10 in a share of seventh.
