Soren, the statesman—the man who built Jharkhand, leader of the masses, the ‘irreplaceable' Guruji

The Printa day ago
Thrice chief minister of Jharkhand, Shibu Soren was a sitting Rajya Sabha MP at 81. Since he was admitted to Delhi's Gangaram Hospital on 19 July, people from all sections of society had been praying for Shibu Soren's recovery.
But many even outside his state, who remember Shibu Soren's long political innings, his intrepid fight for a separate state and the decades-long struggle for the rights of tribals, believe no one can replace 'Dishom Guruji' (a Santhali term meaning guru of the country), as he was fondly named for his leadership and pivotal role in the movement against the Mahajani system of money lenders and the broader movement for a separate Jharkhand.
Ranchi : 'Beloved Dishom Guruji has left us all. I lost everything today… ' A heartbroken Hemant Soren shared his grief in a social media post at 9.44 am Monday, unleashing a wave of mourning in Jharkhand.
Desperate to get a glimpse of Guruji
His popularity was evident in June at the 13th general convention of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha in Ranchi. As soon as son and Chief Minister Hemant Soren reached the stage with Shibu Soren on a wheel chair, the eagerness to get a glimpse of Guruji was evident among the cadre and officials in attendance.
This convention was important in many ways for the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Hemant Soren and Shibu Soren after the party returned to power in the 2024 assembly elections. It was at this convention that Hemant Soren was declared the central president of the party, while Shibu Soren took on the mantle of founder-patron.
Addressing those at the convention, Hemant Soren said, 'We have all reached here after a long journey. Shibu Soren-Ji never needed an introduction. Not only Jharkhand but the whole country knows him as Guruji. The public gave respect to Shibu Soren and made him 'Guruji'. He also repaid the debt of that respect. He was always leading a struggle. He fought for the rights of the people of the state with limited resources. There are very few people who have so much love for the state in their hearts.'
Senior journalist and author of Dishom Guru Shibu Soren, Anuj Sinha says, 'Jharkhand Mukti Morcha is in power. Hemant Soren has emerged as the most accepted leader in the state. Jharkhand has witnessed several reversals on the political map since the unification of Bihar. But nobody can replace Guruji. And there is no single reason or factor for this.'
'Shibu Soren tirelessly campaigned for a separate state for more than three decades. He abolished the money lending system. And most of all, he raised his voice by mobilising tribals for their rights and dignity. Of course, Guruji has faced many difficulties in the storms of time. But the fact is that anything said about him will always be less,' he said.
Formation of JMM and Shibu's role
The idea of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha was conceived by MP A.K. Rai, former MP Binod Bihari Mahto and Shibu Soren. The three were said to be very close.
When the JMM was formed in 1973, Binod Bihari Mahto, the pioneer of the Jharkhand movement and the one who coined the slogan 'Read and Fight', become the president and Shibu Soren took on the role of general secretary. In 1987, Soren became the party president.
The formation of JMM was announced with a big show of strength at the golf ground in Dhanbad. Addressing the crowd on the occasion, Shibu Soren said emotionally, 'I have been made the general secretary of JMM. I don't know whether I deserve this or not, but I swear that I will continue to struggle for an exploitation-free Jharkhand.'
An incident prominently mentioned in another book by author Anuj Kumar Sinha, shows Shibu Soren's popularity and influence even in 1973 during the Jharkhand Movement. In the tribal-dominated village of Gomia, a moneylender's family had occupied land that belonged to the tribals. He also allegedly harassed the tribals.
The conflict continued until one day the moneylender's henchmen allegedly fired at the tribals. The tribals hot back with arrows. The incident enraged Shibu Soren, who mobilised his workers and tribal supporters, who surrounded Giridih city with traditional weapons in support of the tribals.
On 18 June 2025, the Jharkhand Aandolankari Identification Commission released the 75th provisional list of agitators for Ramgarh district. It includes the name of Dishom Guru Shibu Soren as an important character in the fight for a separate state. The commission has states that during 1969-70 and even later, Shibu Soren led a strong mass movement against prohibition, moneylenders and eviction.
He weathered many storms
In his long battle for a separate state and the rights of tribals, Shibu Soren weathered many storms in his political life, including jail terms.
In 2004, he became the coal minister in the UPA government at the Centre. But he had to resign due to an arrest warrant related to the 1975 Chirudih case, where he allegedly instigated the crowds. He was sent to jail, but later acquitted. In 2006, he became a minister at the Centre again, and again handled the coal portfolio.
In between his two stints at the Centre, in 2005, he took oath as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand, but had to resign within 12 days because he didn't have the numbers.
Then in 2008, while holding the Chief Minister's job, he lost the Tamar assembly elections to Independent candidate Raja Peter. As a result, he had to resign. But one year later he was back as chief Minister, this time with the support of BJP.
In forty years, Shibu Soren nurtured the organisation in Santhal Pargana and mobilised the tribals. In recent years, Hemant Soren has taken over the role, continuously strengthening his party. The proof of this was in the results of the 2024 assembly elections, where the JMM alliance won 17 out of the 18 seats in Santhal Pargana, while BJP won just one seat.
Shibu took over his father's battles
Shibu Soren's father was a teacher in Nemra village in Ramgarh district of Jharkhand. Sobaran Manjhi was a champion of tribals' rights and fought many battles, speaking inconvenient truths. Allegedly, it was this activism that led to his murder. Undaunted by the tragedy, a young Shibu took up his father's battles and began uniting tribals in Tundi in Dhanbad. He started the 'Dhankatni' movement against moneylenders. He set up an 'ashram' in Pokhariya. At night, he educated the exploited tribals. It was after this that he was named 'Dishom Guru'.
His love for Dumka
Shibu Soren won eight Lok Sabha elections from Dumka, a politically significant seat in the Santhal Pargana region. It was in the 2024 LS polls that, for the first time, the 80-year-old Shibu Soren decided to sit out the elections due to his advanced age and health issues. But every JMM candidate had sought his blessings, including Nalin Soren, a senior leader, who went on to win from Dumka. Shibu Soren's younger son Basant Soren won the assembly elections and is the sitting MLA from Dumka.
Remembered by close friends and political leaders
Dumka resident Digambar Marandi, a close friend of Shibu Soren in the seventies, says, 'I have been so restless since I got the news of Guruji's death. I have been calling up old friends and sharing our grief. Leave aside our old friends, even the forests, mountains, rivers and streams are sad. There is no question—no one can take Guruji's place. I have been searching for old photographs in my box. I am also collecting material to write a book on Guruji.'
Digambar Marandi adds, 'Guruji should have lived for at least another 15 years. He gave courage to the tribals. He was their voice. Guruji's body should be brought to Dumka for darshan. If possible, please convey this message of mine to Hemant Babu.'
Journalist Suman Singh, who has been covering Dumka politics for a long time, says, this is what Shibu Soren has earned, something not easy for every politician. 'Jharkhand Mukti Morcha's foundation day is celebrated every year on 3 February in Dumka and goes on till very late in the night. But no one used to leave, they stayed back to hear Shibu Soren's speech,' he said.

Govt pushes ahead with its agenda in Parliament as Opposition's protest continues

New Delhi: The government on Tuesday pressed on with its agenda amid continued disruptions in Parliament due to the Opposition's demand for a discussion on the special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, as Lok Sabha passed a bill and Rajya Sabha approved a couple of resolutions despite the din. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju had said on Monday that the government will be compelled to push for Parliament's approval for its legislative agenda if the Opposition continued to obstruct its smooth functioning with its protests. Lok Sabha passed 'The Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Tribes in Assembly Constituencies of the State of Goa Bill, 2025' with a voice vote, the first draft legislation approved by the House in Parliament's Monsoon session which began on July 21. Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal moved for its consideration and passage amid the din in the House due to the Opposition's protest. The bill, which seeks to grant STs reservation in the state assembly, was introduced in the House on this day in 2024 and had been pending since. After the passage of the bill, Sandhya Ray, who was in the chair, adjourned the proceedings for the day as protests by opposition MPs continued unabated. Rajya Sabha saw its first adjournment around 11.45 am, when it was adjourned till 2 pm. When Rajya Sabha met at 2 pm, Opposition MPs were on their feet demanding a discussion on the special intensive revision. Amid ruckus, Harivansh, who was in the Chair, took up two statutory resolutions, including one for extending the President's rule in Manipur for another six months. He said it was a constitutional obligation, and told the members that the House has passed only one Bill in the session so far. The Chair also disallowed any remarks made by opposition leaders on issues other than the resolution that was being taken. Opposition MPs continued to raise slogans on the electoral roll revision issue, as a couple of members also tried to participate in the discussion on the resolution for extending President's Rule in Manipur beyond August 13. The resolution to extend the President's rule in Manipur, and the other one of the Finance Ministry to amend the Second Schedule to the Customs Tariff Act, 1975, were passed by voice vote. The Chair then adjourned the House for the day as protests continued. Barring discussions on Operation Sindoor in both Houses, Parliament has seen little transaction of its normal business since the Monso

Shibu Soren cremated at native village Nemra

The mortal remains of former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren were consigned to flames by his elder son and Chief Minister Hemant Soren at their native village Nemra in Ramgarh district. People from near and far thronged the village to catch a last glimpse of the leader, who was fondly known as 'Dishom Guru' by the masses. His body was laid on a flower-decked charpoy at his ancestral home in the village, in adherence to full tribal customs. Near and dear ones queued up to offer shrouds, chadar, shawls, and bouquets. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and party leader Rahul Gandhi also travelled to the village to attend the funeral of the veteran tribal leader. As the body was carried to the village, supporters and local residents lined both sides of the road in Ranchi to pay their last respects. Slogans of 'Guruji amar rahe [long live Guruji]' were raised by mourners. The mortal remains of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) co-founder Shibu Soren were also kept in the Jharkhand Assembly, where Governor Santosh Gangwar and Speaker Rabindranath Mahato paid tributes. Union Ministers Jual Oram, Annapurna Devi and Sanjay Seth paid homage at the Assembly complex. State ministers Irfan Ansari, Dipika Pandey Singh, Shilpi Neha Tirkey and several legislators, cutting across party lines, also offered tributes. Bihar's Purnia Independent MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav, who paid homage, demanded that the Bharat Ratna be conferred on Shibu Soren in recognition of his contribution to the upliftment of tribal communities. Earlier in the day, Hemant Soren shared an emotional tribute to his father, who passed away in Delhi on Monday (August 4, 2025), through a message on social media platform X. In a post on X, Mr. Soren said he was going through the toughest days of his life as he had lost not only his father but also a pillar of Jharkhand's soul. 'I didn't just call him 'Baba'. He was my guide, the root of my thoughts, and that forest-like shade that protected thousands and lakhs of Jharkhandis from the scorching sun and injustice,' Mr. Soren said. The 81-year-old former Union Minister had passed away at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, where he had been undergoing treatment for kidney-related issues for over a month. Mr. Soren further said that his father's beginnings, whom he called 'Baba', were very humble. 'Born in that small house in Nemra village, where there was poverty, there was hunger, but there was courage. In his childhood, he lost his father. The exploitation of the landlords gave him a fire that made him a fighter for his entire life. I have seen him ploughing the fields, sitting among the people, not just giving speeches, but living the sorrows of the people,' Mr. Soren said in the post. He added, 'In my childhood, when I asked him: 'Baba, why do people call you Dishom Guru?' He would smile and say: 'Because, son, I only understood their pain and made their fight my own'. That title was not written in any book, nor was it given by Parliament — it came from the hearts of Jharkhand's people. 'Dishom' means society, 'Guru' means the one who shows the way.' Shibu Soren had played a key role in the creation of the separate State of Jharkhand. Mr. Soren noted that his father not only showed the way, but also taught how to walk. He recalled that he had always seen him struggling and taking on the mightiest. 'I was scared, but Baba was never afraid. He would say: 'If standing against injustice is a crime, then I will be guilty again and again.' No book can explain Baba's struggle. It was in his sweat, in his voice, and in the cracked heels covered by his sandals. When Jharkhand became a State, his dream came true, but he never considered power an achievement,' Mr. Soren said. He asserted that Jharkhand was not a throne for his father, but the identity of his people. 'Today, Baba is no longer here, but his voice echoes within me. I learned to fight from you, Baba, not to bow down. I learned to love Jharkhand from you without any selfishness. Now you are not among us, but you are in every path of Jharkhand. The dream you saw is now my promise. I will not let Jharkhand bow down; I will not let your name fade away. Your struggle will not remain incomplete,' Mr. Soren said. On Monday, leaders cutting across party lines paid tribute to Shibu Soren. President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, and Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge visited Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and paid tributes to the veteran tribal leader. 'Baba, now you rest. You have fulfilled your duty, now we must walk in your footsteps. Jharkhand will remain indebted to you. I, your son, will keep your promise. Long live Veer Shibu - Long live, long live! May Dishom Guru remain immortal. Hail Jharkhand,' Mr. Soren said at the end of the message.

Congress MP raises doubts over Op Mahadev, asks if terrorists killed were ‘real' Pahalgam attackers

The Rajya Sabha MP was speaking on the issue of deploying Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel inside the parliament, including on marshalling duties, which the Congress party has objected to. 'They can't catch the actual aatankwadi (terrorists). They don't know how to do it. It took them so long to catch them. We don't even know if they are the real ones, but they will come to parliament and target the women. Great. This is their level and limit,' Chowdhury told mediapersons outside parliament Tuesday. New Delhi: A week after Home Minister Amit Shah said the three terrorists who carried out the Pahalgam attack had been killed in an encounter, Congress Rajya Sabha MP Renuka Chowdhury raised doubts whether those eliminated in Operation Mahadev were the 'real' perpetrators of the 22 April massacre. 'They can use power on us, police on us, and marshal power on us and think that we will be scared,' Chowdhury said. Giving details around the process of identification of the terrorists who carried out the Pahalgam attack, the Union home minister told parliament 29 July that a joint team comprising troops from the Indian Army, CRPF and Jammu and Kashmir Police killed three terrorists belonging to Lashkar-e-Taiba on the upper reaches of Srinagar. He identified the trio as Suleiman, a 'grade A category' commander of the LeT, Afghan and Jibran, also grade A category terrorists. He asserted that Indian agencies had ample proof and evidence that they were the perpetrators of the Pahalgam attack. He had said that ballistic reports of the two AK-47s and one M-4 rifle by the Chandigarh Forensic Laboratory matched with cartridges recovered from the scene of crime in Pahalgam, confirming the use of the very rifles behind the ghastly attack. Operation Mahadev was a joint operation by the Army, CRPF and Jammu and Kashmir Police launched in Kashmir's Dachigam on 28 July. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav had questioned the timing of the operation, pointing out its coincidence with the Parliament session. Congress leader Chowdhury takes the debate a step further by casting doubt on the identity of the terrorists and the authenticity of the encounter. Speaking after Shah's detailed speech in the lower house on 29 July, Yadav pointed out the encounter killing of the terrorists happened 28 July, when the parliament was set to discuss the Pahalgam attack and subsequent Operation Sindoor launched by the armed forces. 'We are all happy … terrorists killed, and we support it. But who is reaping the political gain after all? They are asking why I am not thanking them for Operation Mahadev? When it came to giving support, all the political parties of the country were with you…why did the encounter happen only yesterday?' Yadav said in the Lok Sabha during the debate on Operation Sindoor. (Edited by Ajeet Tiwari) Also Read: Hindus can never be terrorists, says Amit Shah during Op Sindoor debate in Rajya Sabha
