Watch: Detroit Lions Podcast rookie minicamp observations and reaction
Friday's rookie minicamp was the first opportunity to see the Detroit Lions draft class and undrafted free agents put on the Honolulu Blue and take part in a practice. I was there for the sun-soaked morning practice and the player press conferences afterward.
As a companion to the notebook published on Friday, I also recorded a video breakdown of what I saw and heard in Allen Park. Via the Detroit Lions Podcast, the video includes my thoughts on the draft class, some undrafted rookies who captured attention, and a couple of prominent veteran tryouts.
As always, the Detroit Lions Podcast is available in an audio-only format via your favorite podcast provider.

Lions TE Brock Wright: HOF game loss reminder that team needs 'sense of urgency' every day
The Detroit Lions are coming off a rough loss to the Chargers in the exhibition opener, the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio. The starters and many key reserves didn't play, but that doesn't mean they escaped feeling down about the 34-7 lopsided loss. Tight end Brock Wright was one of the many significant Lions who didn't even suit up. The veteran is locked in as Detroit's No. 2 tight end and is having a pretty strong summer, but the loss still stung Wright. After Sunday's practice, I asked Wright as part of a media session about how the Lions process the indignity of getting blown out in the first preseason game of 2025. "It always stings when you get beat, especially in a way like that," Wright responded. "But it's just another reminder that you have to have a sense of urgency even though it's still early in training camp. A sense of urgency to get better every day. And it's a race to try and improve and get to where we want to be, because we've got a long way to go this season." Wright also stated that he's working on his blocking technique and has received positive help on that front from new Lions TE Tyler Roehl.

Raheem Morris on Falcons' preseason plan for Kirk Cousins, Michael Penix
Falcons head coach does not plan to play Michael Penix Jr. or Kirk Cousins against the Detroit Lions The Atlanta Falcons did not play their starters very much in last year's preseason, and don't expect that to change in 2025. Prior to Monday's practice, head coach Raheem Morris was asked about the team's preseason plan for quarterbacks Michael Penix Jr. and Kirk Cousins going into Friday's opener against the Detroit Lions. Morris said neither Penix nor Cousins would suit up in the preseason opener. Last year, the team employed a similar strategy. Cousins, who started the 2024 season opener, did not play at all in the preseason. Penix, despite being a rookie, received just a few drives in the opening exhibition and did not appear again until the regular season. Don't expect to see many of the team's starters on Friday night. The Lions already made their preseason debut in the Pro Football Hall of Fame game last Thursday. This Friday night's game kicks off at 7 p.m. ET at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The Falcons are back on the field this morning for their sixth open training camp practice. Check out the team's remaining open practice dates and preseason schedule below.
