College football analyst thinks Oklahoma Sooners will be much improved in 2025
Josh Pate, who covers college football for CBS Sports and is the host of "Josh Pate's College Football Show," was on hand in Atlanta this week to cover SEC media days and had plenty of thoughts about the Oklahoma Sooners heading into the season.
Pate believes OU will be a vastly improved team this year, though he did admit that he seems to be a bit higher on Oklahoma than most other people in attendance were. The college football analyst believes that the Sooners will be a significantly improved team in 2025, despite facing one of the toughest schedules in the nation.
"So like if you think Oklahoma's going to be subpar this year, they'll get swallowed by that schedule," Pate said. "If you think they're going to be good, and I happen to think they'll be a top 10 caliber team this year just in terms of quality, then they'll find a way through that. Not find a way through it unscathed, but they'll find a way through it."
It's no secret that the Sooners had a multitude of flaws last year, most of them on offense. However, those flaws are issues that Pate believes can be addressed and aren't fatal to the program's future success.
"So my theory on them is they were not a terminally flawed team last year," Pate said. "My theory on them is that offensive line combined with Seth Littrell and, just not being the guy for Jackson Arnold or Jackson Arnold not being the guy for that system, that was the terminal flaw. I don't think lack of talent, lack of (recruiting) classes stacked on top of each other, has been the terminal flaw. Defense is not the terminal flaw for them. So organizationally, that's always been a rock-solid place.
Obviously, the pairing of starting quarterback and offensive coordinator(s) last year was not a good thing for the Sooners. QB Jackson Arnold and the OC trio of Seth Littrell, Joe Jon Finley, and Kevin Johns didn't get the job done, as Oklahoma struggled to move the ball and score points. OU hopes they've remedied that problem with the pairing of QB John Mateer and OC Ben Arbuckle, which Pate thinks can make for more success in 2025.
"I think they've got plenty good enough players this year," Pate said. "I think offensive line play will be significantly improved. But I also think that quarterback play, play-calling synergy offensively, complimentary style of play, all that'll be there the way it should be for them, and if it is, you know, 9-3, they're one of the teams where 9-3, I would feel comfortable saying that will be good enough to get them into the Playoff."
As the Sooners exit media days and get ready for fall camp, we're about to find out if everyone who thinks OU will be better is right this year.

Indiana Fever update Caitlin Clark injury status, availability vs New York Liberty
With the 2025 WNBA All-Star break concluded, the Indiana Fever provided an injury status update to star Caitlin Clark entering their Tuesday night matchup against the New York Liberty from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Once we've done that, hopefully we'll have more of a clear mind of what it looks like," White said of Clark's status. With Clark most likely unavailable for Indiana, the team will need to rely heavily on Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston to bear the load on offense with impactful contributions off the bench for the time being. Indiana's Tuesday night clash with New York will tip off at 7 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on ESPN. Social media was buzzing this week after an analyst gave Cassius Winston the nod over Purdue's Braden Smith in a 2020s All-Big Ten list Who is a better and more accomplished point guard: Michigan State's Cassius Winston or Purdue's Braden Smith? This question has been a hot debate on social media this past week. Rapheal Davis of the Big Ten Network sparked a hot debate this week when he unveiled his All-Big Ten teams of the 2020s, with one of the biggest discussions on social media being centered around Winston and Smith. Davis gave Winston the nod as the first team selection at point guard over Smith -- who landed on Davis' second team. It's even more notable that Davis that gave Winston the nod over Smith since Davis played at Purdue himself and could have easily gave his former school's guy the nod in a toss-up decision. Davis noted that Smith could surpass Winston with a strong upcoming senior season, but some (probably many Purdue fans) felt he already deserved the nod over the Spartans legend. When comparing the two star point guard's careers, they are very much similar with both experiencing both personal and team success during their time in college. Smith, of course, still has one more year to further improve his legacy -- and it doesn't hurt his case that the Boilermakers are considered a preseason top five team nationally (in large part to his return for his senior season). If you're reading this article, you're probably like me and a Spartan, which means you would lean towards Winston. But I do respect the argument for Smith, and wouldn't be opposed to him moving into the first team slot should he have another strong year this upcoming season. Regardless of which way you lean, it's a fun debate to have in the middle of July and I personally thank Davis for putting this list together for some fun Big Ten basketball banter in the heart of summer time. Elite 5-star PF Ashlyn Koupal provides recruiting update, lists Spartans as a finalist
Michigan State women's basketball has been named one of five finalists for an elite power forward prospect in the 2026 class. Ashlyn Koupal of Wagner, S.D. has reportedly named her five finalists and Michigan State is in the mix, according to Dushawn London of 247Sports. The Spartans are joined by Nebraska, TCU, Kansas and Duke as finalists for the elite power forward prospect. Koupal is listed as a five-star power forward, with a recruiting rating of 99.56 in 247Sports' composite rating system. She is ranked as the No. 3 power forward and No. 9 overall prospect in 247Sports' rankings for the 2026 class. She is also ranked as the top player from South Dakota in the class. Koupal has previously named her top five schools -- which included each of these same schools mentioned as finalists. But another notable update from London's recent reporting is that it sounds like she is nearing a decision. 'Each school has done their best to show me what it's going to be like and how I'll fit, so now it's about how I feel about all of them," Koupal told London. There is no scheduled commitment date at this time for Koupal so we will just need to continue to monitor her recruitment in anticipation of a big decision coming. Michigan State women's basketball has had a resurgence over the past two seasons under new head coach Robyn Fralick, and landing a commitment of Koupal's nature would truly push them into the upper tier of the Big Ten. This could be a massive recruitment for the Spartans and the quickly evolving program under Fralick.
