Garnacho's Exit Hints Mirror a Long List of Players Who Forced a Transfer

Yahoo6 hours ago

Garnacho's Exit Hints Mirror a Long List of Players Who Forced a Transfer originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Within the last year, Alejandro Garnacho has shown a striking level of disrespect to the Manchester United hierarchy.
Three times he's liked social media posts critical of the manager and/or another player. Following the Europa League loss, he openly questioned the team selection. And then in the biggest display of petulance yet he posted a picture of himself on Instagram wearing Marcus Rashford's Aston Villa Shirt.
But Garnacho is far from an outlier when it comes to pushing for a transfer. In the age of Social Media, it's easy to publicly vent frustrations.
Dislike and Unsubscribe
Rashford fueled the situation further by liking Garnacho's post. That came on the back of very public fall-outs with managers Erik Ten hag and Ruben Amorim.

Meanwhile, in 2023, after only six months at Brighton, Moises Caicedo took to Instagram with a message trying to convince the club to sell him. He was banned from the club's training ground for a month...but eventually got his way and sealed a record-breaking move to Chelsea.
One Strike and You're Out
There's a star studded list of players who have taken the most extreme action - refusing to play - and it usually works.
Whilst at Chelsea, Thibault Courtois simply refused to show up to pre-season training, leaving the club little choice but to cash in and allow the goalkeeper to secure the move to Real Madrid that he craved.

In his desire to leave Leicester, with whom he had recently won the EPL, Riyad Mahrez went on strike not once, but twice until the club eventually relented and sold him to Manchester City where he added trophies galore to his collection.
The list goes on...Matheus Nunez, Dimitri Payet, Luis Suarez, Laurent Koscielny, Marcos Tojo, William Gallas are among the others that either refused to play or in some cases even train. All rode bad press train for a while but eventually got the moves they craved.
Kane and Unable
It's not without risk with the most high profile example being Harry Kane. When Manchester City revealed their interest in Kane in 2021, the striker failed to show up for Spurs pre-season tour to try and force the move. But Chairman Daniel Levy stood firm and it would be another two years before he finally departed. By that time City had signed Haaland; Kane later left for Bayern Munich and missed out on the domestic silverware he had hoped for.

Lyon owner Textor to take step back from running club after relegation to Ligue 2

John Textor pictured attending the Club World Cup game between Botafogo and Palmeiras in Philadelphia on Saturday (JUAN MABROMATA) American businessman John Textor has said he is going to take a step back from the day-to-day running of French club Lyon after they were relegated to Ligue 2 due to their financial situation. "Our success on the pitch has not been matched by our success off the pitch," Textor told AFP in relation to Lyon's plight despite them finishing sixth in Ligue 1 in the season just finished to qualify for Europe. Advertisement Textor runs Lyon in his role as president of Eagle Football, the group which owns several clubs including Brazilian champions Botafogo. But he admitted that his efforts to reduce Lyon's debts and solve their problems have not been enough to convince French football's financial watchdog, known as the DNCG. He therefore now plans to let others take charge of the club's appeal against their relegation, which was announced last Tuesday. "I am going to pull back from this process. We have some people, some partners that are going to take the step forward," he told AFP in Philadelphia following Botafogo's 1-0 defeat to Palmeiras in the Club World Cup on Saturday. Advertisement "I am an owner. If I had a coach go into a game five times in a row with a bad tactical plan I'd fire him. "As the majority owner of Eagle Football I am clearly not getting it done at the DNCG so we are going to put some different faces in play, and we are going to work very constructively with the DNCG." Textor has just agreed a deal to sell his 43 percent stake in English Premier League club Crystal Palace to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson. The BBC reported that Johnson, a former US ambassador to the United Kingdom, would pay £190 million ($255 million) for the shares. Textor, who bought Lyon in late 2022, believes that money can be reinjected into the seven-time French champions to help their case. Advertisement Explaining his decision to step back from Lyon, Textor said he felt his "weird" ideas were being misunderstood. "I am the capitalist that shows up with a bunch of weird creative ideas and I don't understand why they are not understood there, and that is hurting the club," he said. "So I know we are going to put some more capital into the equation, we are going to argue for the case we already made, we are going to do it respectfully." Lyon announced on Friday that they had reached an agreement with European football's governing body UEFA to enable them to play in next season's Europa League, provided an appeal against their relegation succeeds. Advertisement "There is no solvency or sustainability issue with us –- we just cleared the UEFA financial sustainability review," Textor added. "I am very proud of our on-pitch success. We had a relegation squad when I took it took care of the banks, we stabilised the club, we got them back into Europe, and then administratively we get sent down. "It's a pretty odd world for me." as/rcw

Harvey Elliott gesture to Germany raises eyebrows after leading England to trophy

Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott was seen gesturing to Germany after helping England retain its European Under-21 crown with another sublime performance for the Three Lions. Elliott, 22, scored the opening goal in a 3-2 win over Germany in the European Under-21 final, which was his fifth of the tournament. Elliott has been heavily linked with a move away from Liverpool this summer, with several Premier League teams interested in signing the talented midfielder. Advertisement The former Fulham star was also named Player of the Tournament for his heroics in Slovakia, which is expected to boost Liverpool's asking price should the club entertain a sale. However, Elliott hasn't just gone viral for his performances, but his conduct after the final whistle. While some fans theorized that Elliott's gesture was rude, it more likely represents England now winning back-to-back U21 championships. Advertisement England beat Spain 1-0 in 2023 and defended the title against Germany on Saturday. England made the dream start when Elliott scored after five minutes, and Omari Hutchinson made it 2-0 shortly after. Germany hit back just before half-time through Nelson Weiper before Paul Nebel equalized after 61 minutes. Jonathan Rowe became England's hero in extra time, as he sealed the victory with his first touch of the game. Elliott's opener was his fifth of the tournament and his 14th as a member of the England U21s. Elliott has now scored more goals than Alan Shearer at U21 level, and is second on the all-time list behind Eddie Nketiah (16 goals from 2018-2021). Advertisement The 22-year-old was heavily praised by former England international Conor Coady, who said during Channel 4's coverage of the European Under-21 final: "I don't think he needs to help his confidence; I think he's a confident boy anyway and you see that at Liverpool week in, week out, when he plays. "We've seen that in this competition. We've said before about him being a leader - I think he's shown that he's a leader - but I think it's massively important the next step he takes in his career. Whatever he does now, whether that be at Liverpool or elsewhere, that he goes plays and plays a lot. "I think he's at that level now where he has shown to all of us and all the supporters that he is ready for that next level." Elliott's stock is at an all-time high after his stunning performance at the U21 Euros -Credit:2025 UEFA Coady's thoughts were echoed by former England star Jermain Defoe, who added: "He's one of the senior boys now. He's seen it and he's done it. To want to play it, first of all, credit to him, and to produce with a lot pressure… it's a massive summer. Advertisement "We don't know what he's going to do, I'm sure he will have loads of options because he is a quality player. But to do what he's done and Player of the Tournament, five goals… what a tournament." Defoe believes Elliott could leave Liverpool this summer and has urged him to become a star elsewhere if his future is away from Anfield. "There'll be a lot of clubs watching this tournament. We said it before, he's too good to not be playing," Defoe said. "When you're producing in big tournaments like this against the best players... he's a top, top player. For him, he just needs to go out and play, get himself in a team where he's one of the main players, and just go out and express yourself and show how good you are."

French Newspaper's Brutal 5-Word Dig at Lionel Messi Makes Things Worse

French Newspaper's Brutal 5-Word Dig at Lionel Messi Makes Things Worse originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Out of all the FIFA Club World Cup Round of 16 matches, PSG vs Inter Miami is among the most anticipated fixtures of the bunch. This is due to Lionel Messi playing against his former club, where he was known to be unhappy. Advertisement The Argentine star joined Inter Miami from PSG on a free transfer in the summer of 2023. Despite a normal relationship between Messi and the French club, one of the biggest French newspapers gave a slight dig at the former PSG player. L'Équipe published a message directed at Messi just a day before the anticipated PSG vs Inter Miami round of 16 match. Some assume there are still hard feelings from PSG fans due to Messi not guiding them to Champions League glory. Others interpret the message as France's way to get revenge for the 2022 FIFA World Cup final between France and Argentina, where Messi and his team came out on top. L'Équipe's message to Lionel Messi On the front page of a L'Équipe publication, the French newspaper wrote, "Messi ..not everything is forgiven." With the message clear on seeking revenge, many fans believe that the revenge is for PSG and the French national team. This adds tension to the match for some fans, which didn't need it before, since many wonder if Messi has a bit more determination to beat PSG due to his time there. Advertisement Messi was open to talk about his time at PSG and revealed his true feelings after leaving France in 2023. Recently, Messi came out to explain how he felt during training sessions at PSG. Lionel Messi's time at PSG Messi joined PSG in the summer of 2021 on a free transfer from FC Barcelona. Barcelona were unable to register Messi for a new contract, which led to his departure to France. Messi helped PSG win two Ligue 1 titles and a French Super Cup. His time in Paris was marked as 'underwhelming' due to the Champions League performances of PSG. In Messi's first season with PSG, the French team were eliminated from the Champions League in the Round of 16 at the hands of Real Madrid. PSG were leading 2-0 on aggregate until a dramatic Karim Benzema hat-trick at the Santiago Bernabeu sent the Spanish side to the quarterfinals. In his second and final season at PSG, Messi and the French side were eliminated in the Round of 16 again. PSG lost 3-0 on aggregate against Bayern Munich. Messi played in both legs against Bayern but couldn't contribute to a goal for the Parisiens. Now Messi meets PSG again, but this time as opponents. Messi played against PSG ten times in the past, playing for FC Barcelona. His record against the French side is four wins, three draws, and three defeats. Advertisement The last time Messi faced PSG was in 2021 for FC Barcelona, where he scored a screamer against Keylor Navas in a game that finished 1-1.
