Jets Risk Label Used On 1st-Round Pick Armand Membou
However, that may not be the consensus around the league. The Athletic's post-draft roundup of the AFC expressed some doubts on the quality of the tackles in this year's class, including Membou.

"Execs liked the philosophy behind selecting an offensive lineman in the first round for a second consecutive draft, despite mixed reviews on the tackle they selected, Armand Membou,'' ational reporter Mike Sando wrote.
"With no consensus on tackles in this draft, it was easy to find execs unsure about Membou or any of the others as top-10 picks. One called Membou a 'major work in progress' and a 'high-risk, high-reward' prospect carrying greater risk than a top-10 tackle ideally would carry."
The executives were a big fan of the Jets' second-round selection, Mason Taylor, however.
"They universally endorsed second-round tight end Mason Taylor," Sando reported.

"There was no such debate regarding Taylor. Execs think he can start right away."
'Big fan of Mason Taylor's game,' one executive told Sando. 'If I were Indy, I would have waited and taken Mason Taylor in the second round instead of taking Tyler Warren in Round 1.
'I just think in the NFL, unless you are a Gronk, a Kittle or someone that can play big at the catch point and win 50-50s at a high rate, you have to be able to separate as a pass catcher. Taylor can do that.'
One executive Sando spoke to thought the Jets should have handled the third round differently.
"'I thought the Jets should have been in play for Jalen Milroe,' this exec said. 'They draft Membou, so they are prioritizing the line of scrimmage a second year in a row. They are going to be a clear running threat with Justin Fields, but when you play that way, you open him up to potential injury. Milroe would let them continue playing that style.''

The Jets did not select a quarterback in the draft, and third-string quarterback Jordan Travis, a fifth-round pick in 2024, retired last week.

Meet The New Guy: Jonathan Toews
Jets sign hockey legend and Winnipeg native Jonathan Toews to one-year deal in the hopes of gaining an impactful second line centre. The Winnipeg Jets are coming off a historic season, where they hit franchise bests across the board but with it coming to an end, they were forced to make some tough decisions. Longtime winger Nikolaj Ehlers left in free agency and the team really needed a big time signing to bring them back with one coming from a surprising place. Midway through last season, three-time Stanley Cup champion Jonathan Toews said he was looking to make a return to hockey with one true team on his mind for the return. The Winnipeg native would go on to his childhood team and give the Jets a much needed add to their lineup. There's been recent debate throughout the league on how the Florida Panthers have been so successful with one of the leading causes being Sam Bennett listed as their second line centre. Contending teams look at the Panthers lineup with a first line of star talent followed by another anchor up the middle with Bennett. The second line centre spot has become a priority for certian teams and the Jets will see a significant improvement in this area. Vladislav Namestnikov manned the role for a majority of last season and put up just under 40 points for the second straight season. Winnipeg would love to get a higher end point producer in this role and Toews could open up some doors. Although Toews is closer to a 40-point producer at 37 years old, he can fill the all-important role of the defensive centre that helps keep opposing offences at bay like Adam Lowry. The captain will be sidelined for a majority of the season and Toews could step into the role while Namestnikov takes advantage of easier matchups on the third line and hopefully leads to more points. Toews' role on the team will be crucial as early lineup projections have him listed as the centre for the second power play unit and could use his prowess in the faceoff dot to win clutch draws. Only time will tell if his return to hockey will be an impactful one but the main belief throughout the organization after seeing him in a workout is that he will be able to play a meaningful role as Winnipeg had to fend off several other teams to land their hometown product. In addition to winning multiple Stanley Cups, Toews has earned several gold medals with Team Canada and won the Selke Trophy as the NHL's best defensive forward in 2013. He was also a finalist for the award three other times. Toews received the Mark Messier Leadership Award, showcasing his strong leadership qualities, which will be crucial in Lowry's absence. Over 1,067 NHL games, he recorded 372 goals and 511 assists for a total of 883 points, along with a +148 rating. He added 119 points in 137 playoff games across ten postseason appearances, bringing a wealth of experience to the most intense and demanding situations. Michael Penix Jr. believes Falcons offense 'should be unstoppable,' emphasizes getting ball to Kyle Pitts
After the first practice of Atlanta Falcons training camp, quarterback Michael Penix Jr. delivered a message before fielding his first question. "See we got KP the ball today," Penix said unprompted, referencing the involvement of tight end Kyle Pitts in the offense Thursday. Penix smirked, then added: "There's gonna be a lot of that." Pitts is entering the final year of his rookie contract. The highest-drafted tight end in NFL history, Pitts hasn't lived up to the perhaps fantastical expectations he faced when he was drafted No. 4 overall in 2021. As a rookie, the former Florida star recorded the third-most receiving yards (1,026) of any tight end in the league that season. But he found the end zone only once. In each of the three seasons since, Pitts hasn't even come close to returning to the 1,000-yard receiving mark. Plus, he's averaged just 74.3 targets per season in that span, finally reaching 10 career receiving touchdowns in 2024. Pitts has been underutilized in the Falcons' offense, particularly over the past three years. Penix indicated that won't happen again in 2025. Entering his first training camp as Altanta's QB1, the now-second-year signal-caller has big plans for a unit coordinated by Zac Robinson that's stacked with a deck of intriguing playmakers. Pitts is one of them. Running back Bijan Robinson, who recorded the NFL's third-most rushing yards last season but was similarly underused as a rookie in 2023, is another. Not only did Penix spend extra time throwing to Pitts this offseason, but he also did the same with wide receiver Drake London, who is coming off a 100-reception, 1,271-yard and 9-touchdown campaign. 'We should be the best in the league with the guys we've got around us,' a confident Penix said, per The Associated Press. 'We should be unstoppable. So that's that's our goal. We want to be No. 1 in all categories.' In addition to London, the Falcons' wide receiving corps includes a shifty Darnell Mooney and a slippery Ray-Ray McCloud III. London ranked second in the league with 22 contested catches in 2024, according to Pro Football Focus, which had McCloud down for the most yards after the catch (342) of any Falcons wideout last season. As for Mooney, his 992 receiving yards were his most in a single season since 2021. Mooney did, however, leave Thursday's practice after diving for a deep ball and taking a hard fall, according to multiple reports. Still, the potential is clearly there for the kind of prolific offensive firepower that Penix surgically facilitated during his final season at Washington, where he became a Heisman Trophy finalist and national runner-up. Penix backed up then-newly-signed Kirk Cousins last season after the Falcons surprisingly drafted him No. 8 overall. Cousins was ultimately benched after struggling in the second half of the season while battling pain in his right arm. Penix started the final three games. Although his Falcons went 1-2 and missed the playoffs at 8-9, he showed enough promise to earn the opportunity to start full-time this season. Those games were critical to Penix's development. 'Yeah, it's very important,' Penix said Thursday, via the AP. 'Just knowing, just being able to go out there and get those games with full-speed reps — it instills confidence, knowing I can go out there and do the same thing that you saw in college and all my life. "So, you know, just I would say biggest thing is confidence." Penix signaled plenty of that the first day of Falcons training camp.

Detroit Lions offensive line is a work in progress after being among NFL's best
The Detroit Lions had one of the NFL's best offensive lines last season. This year is more of a work in progress. Center Frank Ragnow's retirement and the loss of right guard Kevin Zeitler in free agency have opened up competition for at least two new starters. Graham Glasgow, who started at left guard last season and has experience at center, along with rookie Tate Ratledge, are getting reps at center through four days of training camp. And then there's the banged-up veteran Taylor Decker at left tackle. "It's been great. Tate, I thought, was doing a good job. Graham was in there today, and I've been comfortable with Graham for quite some time,'' Lions quarterback Jared Goff said on Thursday. "Whoever it ends up being, I'll be good with.'' After Ratledge saw the bulk of center reps the first three days of camp, Glasgow took the center snaps on Thursday. Ratledge played only guard at Georgia, except for a few practice snaps at center. So he's adjusting to the NFL game and to playing a new position. "I think just the speed of everything happening. At guard, you have a little bit of a delay being off the ball and then, of course, you get up here and you're going against quicker guys,'' Ratledge said. He has no preference for guard or center. "I enjoy football, it doesn't matter where I am on the field,'' said Ratledge, a second-round pick who sports a John Wayne tattoo on his left bicep. Coach Dan Campbell said earlier in the week that he will keep his eye on the offensive line. "(Ratledge is) getting it all at once. It's everything, it is. It's the mental and it's the technique of it. So, yeah, look, we're putting a lot on him,'' Campbell said. "He's drinking out of a fire hose right now. But there are things that we saw with him in college at Georgia that we felt like, 'You know what? We think this guy can play center.'' Decker remains sidelined while recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, but is expected to join the team after the Hall of Fame game on July 31. He's been on the sidelines at camp daily. "The standard is the standard. We're expected to be one of the top offensive lines in the league,'' Decker said. "You lose big pieces, but we've put those expectations on ourselves and put ourselves in a position where we're expected to perform a certain way, and it doesn't matter.'' Pro Bowl right tackle Penei Sewell is healthy and practicing daily. Christian Mahogany has been a sort of utility lineman for the Lions the past couple of years. He played in seven games in 2024 and started two, including a playoff game. Kayode Awosika, who started 11 games at guard in 2024, will also contend for a starting guard spot. NOTES: Lions LB Alex Anzalone, who has not participated in camp, was on the sidelines again Thursday in street clothes. He told reporters earlier in the week that he is disappointed the Lions have not signed him to a contract extension. INJURIES: LB Derrick Barnes (hand) and CB Terrion Arnold (leg) left practice early to be evaluated further for their injuries. … CB Ennis Rakestraw (chest) was working on the sidelines but has not practiced since he was injured on Sunday. He's expected to return within days.
