Delhi Begins Ban On Fuel Sale To End-Of-Life Vehicles, 16 Impounded So Far On Day One
Delhi began enforcing a ban on refueling petrol vehicles over 15 years old and diesel vehicles over 10 years old, impounding at least 16 on the first day.
The Delhi Police on Tuesday impounded 16 vehicles as the ban on supply of fuel to old vehicles kicked off in Delhi. The drive began from 6 am, enforcing the prohibition of fuel sale to petrol vehicles older than 15 years and diesel vehicles older than 10 years.
A 2018 Supreme Court judgment had banned diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years in Delhi.
A 2014 National Green Tribunal order also prohibited the parking of vehicles aged over 15 years in public places.
Announcements were being made at petrol pumps that fuel would not be supplied to older vehicles, and subsequently, such vehicles were being impounded.
For the drive, the Delhi government has also installed Automatic Number Plate reader cameras (ANPR) at nearly 350 petrol pumps across the national capital for detection of such vehicles.
The transport department has chalked out a detailed deployment plan involving personnel from its organisation, Delhi Police, Traffic Police and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
Multiple teams of the transport department, traffic police and local police have been deployed at different petrol pumps in South Delhi.
According to PTI, the Transport Enforcement and Delhi Traffic Police teams were seen stationed at a petrol pump in Chirag Dilli since early morning.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Jagan Lal of Delhi Traffic Police told PTI that they are verifying vehicle details using their central database.
'The cameras will inform automatically, but our teams are also checking vehicles using our central database. The drive is being carried out jointly with local police and transport officials to ensure full compliance and to maintain law and order," said ASI Jagan Lal.
Hriday Ram, a staff member at the Dhingra petrol pump, said, 'We have been instructed not to fill fuel in any old vehicle. The moment such a vehicle is detected by the camera or by us, we alert the police or enforcement team immediately."
The move is part of the Delhi government's effort to tackle air pollution.

Drunk Audi driver runs over 5 sleeping on footpath in South Delhi
Five people, including an eight-year-old girl, were injured after a car allegedly driven by a drunk driver mounted a footpath and ran over them in South Delhi's Vasant Vihar area late Saturday night. Medical reports of the driver named, Utsav Shekhar, 40, confirmed that he was under the influence of alcohol while driving.(Hindustan Times/Vipin Kumar) According to officials quoted by news agency PTI, the victims, including two couples and the child, were asleep on a footpath near Shiva Camp when the incident occurred. The vehicle, an Audi, was reportedly being driven under the influence of alcohol. The incident took place around 1:45 am on July 9 and the driver was apprehended afterwards. Medical reports of the driver named, Utsav Shekhar, 40, confirmed that he was under the influence of alcohol while driving. By the time officers reached the scene, the injured people had already been taken to the hospital for treatment. The victims have been identified as Ladhi, aged 40, her eight-year-old daughter Bimla, husband Sabami (alias Chirma) aged 45, Ram Chander, aged 45 and his 35-year-old wife Narayani. All the victims are from Rajasthan. Russian woman, kids found living in cave in Karnataka, to be deported
A 40-year-old Russian woman and her two daughters, aged six and four, were found inside a cave in the Ramateertha hills in Gokarna, where she is believed to have resided for at least one week in the search of 'spiritual peace', police officials said on Saturday. Security personnel rescue a Russian woman and her two children from a remote cave in Ramatirtha hills, in Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka. (PTI) The woman, identified as Nina Kutina alias Mohi, came to India on a business visa which expired in 2017, police officials said. It was during a routine patrol on Friday, following a recent landslide that Circle Police Inspector Sridhar and his team spotted clothes hanging outside the cave. The officers made their way through the thick shrubs of Ramatirtha Hill and found Mohi and her two children in the cave. 'Our patrolling team spotted saree and other clothes being hung for drying outside the cave in Ramatirtha Hill. When they went there, they spotted Mohi along with her children,' Uttara Kannada superintendent of police M Narayana said. During questioning, Nina told the police that she was practising meditation and 'Hindu rituals' inside the cave. 'It was quite surprising how she and her children survived in the woods and what they ate. Thankfully, nothing untoward happened to her or the children during their time in the forest,' he said. Preliminary investigation suggests that the three were using plastic sheets to sleep and eating instant noodles, the official said. According to him, the woman may have reached the cave — deemed dangerous due to landslides, venomous snakes and other wild animals — from Goa. Nina refused to share her passport and visa details but later disclosed they were lost in the forest. Police officials recovered them near the cave. Narayana further said, 'We have arranged her stay in an ashram, run by a Sadhvi. We have initiated the process to take her to Bengaluru from Gokarna and begin the deportation process.' With the help of a local NGO, the Russian Embassy was contacted and formalities were set in motion to deport her. 'Our department informed Russian embassy and would hand them over to Bengaluru FRRO on Monday,' the SP said.
