Track-ready BMW M2 ditches S58 straight 6 for 4-cylinder engine

Positioned as an 'entry-level' racer for customer racing outfits, BMW M's latest M2 Racing is based on the current M2. Yet, as opposed to employing the latter M car's (353kW/600N.m) S58 3l turbocharged inline-six, the track-focused model is equipped with the Bavarian brand's 2l turbocharged four-pot.
The B48 unit produces 230kW and 420N.m of torque, sent to the road via a seven-speed, ZF-sourced transmission. As a reminder, the M2's six-pot is coupled with BMW's eight-speed M Steptronic unit. The German marque's motorsport department claims these figures are good to allow for a top speed exceeding 270km/h.

While down on power compared with the M Steptronic-equipped M2, it is worth noting that the race-ready variant weighs considerably less; tipping the scales at a claimed 1 498kg — a saving of 232kg. This has been achieved thanks to the fitment of several lightweight items, including a carbon-fibre roof. The M2 Racing is brought to a halt by a set of standard-fitment M Compound brakes, replete with M-specific brake pads, front and rear, and cooling setup. The callipers are housed within 18-inch forged alloy rims, wrapped in Goodyear rubber. Further mechanical revisions include upgrades to the chassis and fitment of a KW suspension arrangement, replete with adjustable fore and aft anti-roll bars.

So, how much can you expect to pay for the M2 Racing? In short, €98 000, which, at the current Rand-Euro exchange rate, translates to just over R2 060 000, making it around R500 000 more expensive than the M car it is based on.

BMW X3 M50 balances power, comfort and efficiency
Like its 3 Series cousin, the BMW X3 has become an important cog for the German brand and its customer base. The new sport activity vehicle (SAV), built in Rosslyn, arrived in South Africa recently in three models and won the 2026 SA Car of the Year title as voted by the Guild of Mobility Journalists. We spent time with the BMW X3 M50 xDrive variant, the high-performance model in the range. It is the flagship version until a fuller-bodied X3M materialises. The most obvious change to the new-generation X3 from the outside is the new look, with rounded corners, hexagonal shapes and a silhouette akin to the larger BMW XM. The stylish showpiece is the Kammback rear — an automotive styling feature wherein the rear of the car abruptly cuts off. This SAV is particularly good looking in the creamy white hue of the test car, which BMW calls Dune grey metallic. The interior isn't a wholesale transformation. Most of the features such as the large curved display, the array of function buttons on the central tunnel and more are modern BMW type sets. It's only the dash plastics that are in a textured mesh surface and a set of new trim lights that extend into the doors as fresh ideas. These lights also shine bright at night and broadcast moods and selected driving modes. The interior is smart and polished in feel and build quality, while the electric seats are comfy and generously padded. Standard amenities are generous but you'll need to raid the options catalogue for more. From behind the multifunction helm you get the sense that you're driving a premium car and you are driving an X3 that's larger than any model before. The new iteration stretches 4,755mm in length, 1,920mm width and 1,660mm height, making it 34mm longer, 29mm wider and 16mm taller that the previous X3. You notice the growth spurt everywhere, especially between the lanes, where it can drive autonomously. Occupants enjoy more leg, head and shoulder room, and more luggage can be swallowed by the expanded boot with a power tailgate. At times it felt like commanding an X5 but it's nicely measured and feels poised, refined and powerful, thanks to the 280kW and 580Nm 3.0 l twin-turbo straight-six petrol engine that's paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive system. It has a mild-hybrid 48V system injecting 13kW to the mix and silently powering the car at crawl speeds. It kicks out a combined 293kW and can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 4.6 secs to run out of steam at 250km/h. It's a tarmac bruiser when you need it to be that also corners keenly. The more pleasing discovery is the cruising ability and low fuel-eating habits. The ride is cosseting, with little to no vibration or noise from the outside, whether driving on smooth or rough surfaces. Dedicated to saving fuel, the X3 M50 test car consumed 5.7 l /100km. Sticking to national speed limits, the figure increased to 7.6 l /100km, which was lower than the 8.2 l /100km marketed by its maker. The extravagance, performance and the potential to be frugal displayed by the most expensive model in the range will have me recommend it before any of the more affordable and sensible lower ranges powered by four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, including the X3 30e plug-in-hybrid. If the goal was to make the new X3 a resounding upgrade from the old car, BMW has achieved this with aplomb. Direct competition for the X3 M50 xDrive that's priced from R1,545,447 and sold with a two-year/unlimited distance warranty and five-year/100,000km maintenance plan include the Mercedes-Benz GLC 300d and Range Rover Evoque D200 diesels.

The facelifted fourth-generation Kia Sorento has landed in South Africa, with the South Korean automaker's local arm revealing pricing and specs for the updated model lineup. Sporting fresh exterior styling and upgraded interior tech, the facelifted model lineup has now finally arrived in South Africa, with the three-strong range priced from a hair below R1m. Round back, the LED taillamp array has received subtle updates, including the fitment of a new lighting signature. As standard, all models ship with keyless entry and start; 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment, replete with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; wireless smartphone charging; dual-zone climate control; a leather-trimmed multifunction steering wheel; synthetic leather upholstery for the pews; a panoramic sunroof; and reverse-view camera system supplemented by fore and aft park distance sensors. On top of the aforementioned items, the mid-tier, SX model gains heated/ventilated electrically adjustable front pews, steering wheel heating, rain-sensing wipers, adaptive cruise control (as opposed to the EX+'s standard system) and additional driver safety systems. The latter includes lane-keep and following assist, rear cross traffic alert and blind-spot collision avoidance. The flagship SXL model's list of standard spec further includes a head-up display, 12.3-inch digital instrumentation, a 12-speaker Bose sound system, surround-view camera array, side parking sensors, and blind-spot monitoring. A single engine, exclusively coupled with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, is employed across the range. The 2.2l, four-cylinder turbodiesel produces 148kW and 440N.m of torque. The EX+ variant delivers power to the front wheels, while the SX and SXL are equipped with all-wheel drivetrains. New vehicle sales finish first half of 2025 on a noteworthy high
Aside from posting gains throughout the year, the local market has not experienced an downturn in sales for nine consecutive months. Image: Charl Bosch The upwards momentum in South Africa's new vehicles sales showed no let in June, with the sixth consecutive increase in as many months, and ninth overall since October last year. 3 000 sales exceeded Repeating the results of May, the Toyota Hilux ended the month as the country's best-selling vehicle once again ahead of its arch rival, the Ford Ranger, but with sales of more than 3 000 units for the first time this year. Taking second place with an offset 2 318 versus the Hilux's 3 035, the Ranger beat-out the Toyota Corolla Cross and Volkswagen Polo Vivo, whose respective totals of 2 132 and 1 962 placed them third and fourth. ALSO READ: New vehicle sales extended winning streak for a fifth time in May Moving up two places from May, the Isuzu D-Max completed a locally manufactured top five with total sales of 1 678, followed by the sixth placed Chery Tiggo 4 Pro as the highest place imported vehicle with a total of 1 538. Completing an even split between in producing regions, the Hyundai Grand i10 dropped a notch to seventh on 1 484, while the Suzuki Swift recorded the biggest drop of five places from May to settle at eighth with an offset of 1 466. Rounding the top 10 off in a direct swap from last month, the GWH Haval Jolion placed ninth on 1 116 and the Suzuki Fronx 10th on 1 112 as the only other vehicle to amass four digit figures. Having lost ground in May, vehicle exports returned to positive territory in June with an uptake of 7.9% from 33 696 to 36 343. In total, dealer sales made-up 85.9% or 40 621 of the 47 294 vehicles sold, with the rest being split up as follows: Rental agencies: 8.2% Corporate Fleets: 3.2% Government: 2.7% Naamsa reaction 'For the first half of the year new vehicle sales were now 13.6% ahead of the corresponding period 2024, supported by and large by an influx of affordable imported models,' Naamsa said. 'The upbeat performance in domestic new vehicle sales builds on gains since the fourth quarter of 2024. 'This success was underpinned by a combination of favourable economic fundamentals, including decreasing interest rates following the South African Reserve Bank's 25 basis point cut May, a still-benign inflation backdrop and improved credit access across the market. In the same report, Naamsa CEO Mikel Mabasa remarked, 'the first half of 2025 has shown just how resilient and responsive our domestic market truly is. Strong consumer demand, supported by positive economic fundamentals, has helped the automotive sector deliver impressive growth amid global turbulence'. The association, however, warned that the second half of the year will present a more complex picture, saying, 'while domestic sales are likely to remain robust in the near term due to lagged effects of interest rate cuts and resilient consumer sentiment, consumers continue to drive demand for affordable, and high-specification models'. Changed top 10 best-selling marques Out of the top 10 best-selling brands, only the top three remained steady, with Toyota placing first on 11 690, Suzuki second on 5 221 and Volkswagen third on 4 973. In a reverse from May, Ford swapped places with Hyundai with sales of 3 058 versus 2 905, while GWM remained sixth on 2 288 ahead of its arch rival, Chery, with 2 101. Keeping its eighth place, Isuzu's 2 087 saw it place ahead of Mahinda's 1 483, with the biggest surprise being BMW's return to the top 10 with sales of 1 349 at the expense of Renault, Kia and Nissan.
