Minister Hardeep Puri reviews LPG portability policy in meeting with energy PSUs, officials
In a social media post on X, the Union Minister shared that the number of LPG connections in the country has risen to over 33 crore from 14 crore in 2014, pushing overall coverage from 62 per cent before 2016 to over 100 per cent now.
'As the number of LPG dealerships increases to more than 25,570 to cater to the rising demand, in a meeting with senior officials of @PetroleumMin and CMDs of India's energy sector PSUs, we discussed the policy of portability from one OMC to another for the consumers,' the Minister said in the post.
As per the post, a major contributor to this transformation has been the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), under which more than 10.33 crore free LPG connections have been distributed to beneficiaries in both rural and urban areas.
To meet the surging demand for cooking gas, the number of LPG dealerships has also increased to more than 25,570 across the country.
Puri noted that the government is exploring new policies to enhance consumer convenience, including the introduction of portability between Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs).
The Union Minister further added that in an effort to strengthen last-mile delivery, OMCs have engaged 22,443 Common Service Centres (CSCs) and Village Level Entrepreneurs (VLEs), which together delivered 58 lakh cylinders during FY 2024-25 to remote and underserved regions.
The Minister also reviewed the progress of India's energy transition efforts with officials from the Petroleum Ministry and PSU heads. He revealed that solar power infrastructure has been installed at nearly 79,000 out of the country's 88,000+ fuel retail outlets. These installations range in capacity from below 1KW to more than 3KW, helping reduce the carbon footprint of fuel stations.
'Even as India moves ahead with full momentum towards the energy security goals under the leadership of PM @narendramodi Ji, we continue to focus on green, sustainable and innovative sources of energy,' Puri affirmed in his post.
'In a meeting with @PetroleumMin officials and captains of PSU-OMCs we reviewed the process of setting of solar power infrastructure at the vast network of more than 88,000 retail outlets across the country,' the post added.
Talking to ANI on Monday, Puri said that India is putting in all kinds of effort to ramp up its own traditional fossil-based energy production, and the latest push is to dig deep in the Andaman region.
Puri outlined several measures the government has been taking over the years for exploration and production. He also noted that the exploration in the Andamans is pointing to 'good news' and may end up becoming India's 'Guyana moment'. (ANI)

Indian Army makes big defence deal, will buy 212 tank transporter trailers that will enhance military operational capability
(Image: ANI) New Delhi: The Indian Army on Friday, 1 August, signed an agreement of Rs 223.95 crore with Axiscades Aerospace and Technologies Private Limited. Under this, 212 state-of-the-art 50-tonne tank transporter trailers will be purchased. This deal is an important step towards increasing the operational mobility capability of the army and supporting the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan. This agreement was signed under the Indian-IDDM category. This agreement gives priority to indigenous design, development and manufacturing. This will strengthen self-reliance in the defence sector. These trailers are equipped with hydraulic/pneumatic ramps and steerable and liftable axles. These will make it easier to transport tanks and armoured vehicles to difficult areas. These trailers will add to the operational strength of the army and greatly enhance the logistics and operational capabilities of the army, and will act as a force multiplier. This deal will boost the indigenous defence manufacturing sector and will also create permanent employment opportunities. This is a sign of strong preparation for future challenges. Earlier, the Indian Army conducted the high-tech Divya Drishti exercise in Sikkim on 28 July. The exercise, conducted in the high-altitude areas of East Sikkim, tested new technologies designed to improve battlefield awareness, real-time surveillance and quick decision-making. The soldiers of the Tri Shakti Corps used a combination of ground-based systems and aerial platforms, including UAVs and drones, to execute real scenarios. Its special feature was the use of AI sensors. These sensors were connected to advanced communication systems. This arrangement ensured smooth and secure data flow between the command centres and helped in increasing situational awareness as well as making accurate decisions, i.e. a strong sensor-to-shooter link was created.

Punjab govt eases family pension rules for NPS employees
Chandigarh: Punjab finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Saturday announced that the finance department had withdrawn a key option clause for new pension scheme (NPS) employees to receive family or invalid pension. Terming it a move to support the families of state govt employees, he said this decision comes after the govt recognised the undue hardship caused to the families of employees who died in harness, as most did not formally exercise this option. In a press statement, Cheema said the govt previously extended additional relief in the form of a family or invalid pension to NPS employees who became disabled or died while in service through finance department instructions dated Oct 8, 2021. However, Clause 6 of these instructions required both existing and newly recruited employees to choose within a specific timeframe whether they wanted to receive the family or invalid pension or the benefits of the NPS scheme. He said that this condition created significant difficulties for families who were unaware of the requirement or were unable to complete the process. Cheema said the finance department has now deleted Clause 6 of the instructions on June 27, 2025, to rectify the issue. He said this change, which was initially implemented for Punjab govt NPS employees, has now been extended to include NPS employees of boards, corporations, public sector undertakings (PSUs), and state autonomous bodies (SABs). "This ensures that all employees under the NPS are now eligible for the additional relief without having to formally exercise the option," he added.
