Kedah monitoring construction of illegal non-Islamic houses of worship
State Human Resources, Chinese, Indian and Siamese Communities and Non-Governmental Organisations Committee chairman Wong Chia Zhen said this needed to be done carefully as it involved racial sensitivities and existing laws.
'Non-Islamic houses of worship built without approval are being monitored by the local authorities in Kedah.
'Among the districts with the highest number of applications for non-Islamic houses of worship are Kuala Muda and Kulim. There is no denying that there are several illegal non-Islamic houses of worship in these two districts,' he told the Kedah State Legislative Assembly sitting today.
He said the state government, in addressing issues related to existing non-Islamic houses of worship, does not directly take stern actions but, instead, offers space for negotiations and solutions in a good and orderly manner.
He said the state government also emphasises the construction of new non-Islamic houses of worship which fully comply with the stipulated guidelines and regulations to ensure a balance between physical development and social harmony in the state.
Wong said that as proof of its commitment, the state government approved five applications for government land sites for non-Islamic houses of worship in the Kuala Muda district at the RIBI committee meeting on April 13.
Meanwhile, on the issue regarding the Sri Veerama Kaliaman Temple at the Tongkang Yard JKR Quarters here, Wong said the temple would be relocated to a more suitable site.
This, he said, was to ensure comfort and safety as well as meet the needs of more structured land planning.
'Several proposed locations have been presented by the temple committee and the Kota Setar District land administrator is evaluating them in terms of suitability.

Zahid: Umno will not contest GE16 alone
MANJUNG: Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today made it clear that the party will not contest the 16th General Election (GE16) on its own. The Barisan Nasional chairman said the party continues to value both its historical partners in BN, including MCA, MIC, and Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS), as well as its newer allies in Pakatan Harapan. "Don't boast about wanting to contest solo. In the past, we have gone it alone. The result in Perak was just nine seats. At the national level, only 30 parliamentary seats. "So what's wrong if, in GE16, we unite our friends in Barisan Nasional with those in Pakatan Harapan? Zahid said the recent Ayer Kuning by-election demonstrated that the alliance between BN and PH must be maintained in the next general election. "We must also embrace and support the seats that belong to our partners. Take Ayer Kuning as an example. "In the previous election, we lost all the Chinese-majority polling districts. But in the recent by-election, we won all the Chinese-majority polling districts except one. "This is not just about sincerity or honesty; it's about a political strategy crafted by Umno and the BN leadership. God willing, if we remain sincere and honest with our allies, it will yield excellent results. "Did we not contest solo? Yes, we did but with the support of our friends from other parties. God willing, even as we contest under our own banner, we will continue to stand alongside our allies," he said. Zahid also said that Umno will retain the dacing (scales) symbol for the upcoming general election, but this does not mean the party is sidelining its allies. "What does this mean? Does it mean we want to sideline our friends from MCA, MIC, and PBRS? Does it mean we want to reject our friends in PH whether PKR, DAP, or Amanah? "Umno has never abandoned its friends. Even with new allies, we have never discarded our long-time partners," he said.

China opens third extension to sensitive Taiwan Strait flight path
HONG KONG: China said on Sunday it has opened a third extension of the M503 flight route, which is just west of an unofficial dividing line in the Taiwan Strait, with Taipei protesting this was a 'unilateral' move aimed at changing the strait's status quo. China last year moved the M503 route closer to the median line, drawing a similarly angry response from Taipei, which says any changes to the flight route and its extensions must be communicated in advance and agreed by both sides. The opening of the W121 extension comes days before the annual Han Kuang military and civil defence drills that Taiwan holds to simulate a Chinese blockade and invasion of the democratic island. The median line had for years served as an unofficial barrier between Chinese-claimed Taiwan and China, but China says it does not recognise its existence and Chinese warplanes now regularly fly over it as Beijing seeks to pressure Taipei to accept its sovereignty claims. The Civil Aviation Authority of China said that 'in order to further optimize the airspace environment and improve operational efficiency, from now on, civil aviation will use the W121 connection line of the M503 route.' Taiwan's China policy-making Mainland Affairs Council said in a statement to Reuters that mainland China 'used unilateral actions to change the status quo and increase cross-strait and regional unrest.' This is the third extension after W122 and W123, which are to the south of W121, opened last year. All three go west to east, from mainland China in the direction of Taiwan. This measure is aimed at 'ensuring flight safety, reducing flight delays, and protecting the rights and interests of passengers,' China's Taiwan Affairs Office said. It added that the opening was 'beneficial' to both sides of the strait. Taipei disputed the explanation as 'unjustified', saying 'the number of international air travellers on the mainland has not yet recovered' to pre-COVID-19 pandemic levels. Taiwan, facing ramped-up military pressure from China, which considers the separately governed island as its own, begins its Han Kuang exercises on July 9 and they are set to last for 10 days.

Controversy brews over Nurul Izzah's ‘silent' efforts for Indian community
A CONTROVERSY is brewing after PKR deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar defended her 'quiet approach' to addressing longstanding issues faced by the Indian community. It drew criticism from MIC deputy president M Saravanan, who has demanded proof of her efforts to support the community. Now, the Member of Parliament for Batu, P Prabakaran has offered to mediate by proposing a roundtable to try to resolve the conflict. Explaining her point, Nurul Izzah said, 'For the longest time, I have chosen to work quietly because I believe in substance before spectacle.' On Thursday, she insisted that her silence does not equate to inaction. She cited year-long roundtables with economists, civil society groups, and community leaders that developed proposals including technical training hubs, preschool education policies, and entrepreneurship incubators under the upcoming 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). However, Saravanan has challenged her claims, demanding proof of concrete outcomes. 'So, we ask Nurul Izzah, if you are indeed working for the community, please start by disclosing what has been done or proposed on the matriculation intake issue. Let the Indian community see for themselves whether your silent efforts have translated into real, visible outcomes,' Saravanan said. He warned against repeating MIC's past mistake of remaining silent on community demands during BN's rule. P Prabakaran said finger-pointing was not constructive, and that a more mature approach was required. 'As such, I propose a roundtable be held soon,' he said in a statement yesterday.
