Zahid: Umno will not contest GE16 alone

New Straits Times13 hours ago
MANJUNG: Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today made it clear that the party will not contest the 16th General Election (GE16) on its own.
The Barisan Nasional chairman said the party continues to value both its historical partners in BN, including MCA, MIC, and Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS), as well as its newer allies in Pakatan Harapan.
"Don't boast about wanting to contest solo. In the past, we have gone it alone. The result in Perak was just nine seats. At the national level, only 30 parliamentary seats.
"So what's wrong if, in GE16, we unite our friends in Barisan Nasional with those in Pakatan Harapan?
"In Lumut, if it is destined that the candidate chosen is based on a combination of votes from PH and BN, based on logic and political calculations, we could secure around 61,000 votes," he said.
Zahid, who is deputy prime minister, said this during his opening speech at the Umno Lumut Division meeting at Dewan Merdeka here today.
Also present were Perak Umno chief and Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, and Lumut Umno division chief Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.
Zahid said the recent Ayer Kuning by-election demonstrated that the alliance between BN and PH must be maintained in the next general election.
"We must also embrace and support the seats that belong to our partners. Take Ayer Kuning as an example.
"In the previous election, we lost all the Chinese-majority polling districts. But in the recent by-election, we won all the Chinese-majority polling districts except one.
"This is not just about sincerity or honesty; it's about a political strategy crafted by Umno and the BN leadership. God willing, if we remain sincere and honest with our allies, it will yield excellent results.
"Did we not contest solo? Yes, we did but with the support of our friends from other parties. God willing, even as we contest under our own banner, we will continue to stand alongside our allies," he said.
Zahid also said that Umno will retain the dacing (scales) symbol for the upcoming general election, but this does not mean the party is sidelining its allies.
"What does this mean? Does it mean we want to sideline our friends from MCA, MIC, and PBRS? Does it mean we want to reject our friends in PH whether PKR, DAP, or Amanah?
"Umno has never abandoned its friends. Even with new allies, we have never discarded our long-time partners," he said.

No longer easy to get strong majority, Johari reminds Umno

Umno vice-president Johari Ghani speaking to members of the Seremban division at their general meeting today. (Bernama pic) SEREMBAN : Umno has been urged to prepare leaders who are principled, trustworthy, and capable of uniting all communities, in line with the expectations of today's voters. Umno vice-president Johari Ghani reminded party members that it was not easy to secure a majority in today's challenging political landscape. The party needed a new strategy for the next general election, one that focussed on the aspirations of the younger generation. Umno could not rely on nostalgia to secure votes, he said. Johari said voters, especially the younger generation, have high expectations of leaders who are not only knowledgeable but also open, transparent, and possess integrity and credibility. 'They (voters) want leaders who are knowledgeable, both on local and international matters, and who are committed to issues like the environment and conservation,' he said at the Seremban Umno delegates meeting today, Bernama reported. 'This is the reality. Young voters have very high expectations. They want principled leaders – leaders who can be trusted, and who can strengthen ties among all communities,' he was quoted as saying. Johari said Umno must be more dynamic and open to remain relevant. 'Umno needs to accept the reality that securing a strong majority isn't an easy task, as voters now have diverse ideologies,' he said. 'Don't assume that we will always be the only ones in power. There are times when we must share power. We need to accept the fact that the world today is changing, finding a political party with a strong majority is no longer easy, as each has a different ideology,' he said.

Zahid confident BN-PH ties will lead to election success

BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (fourth from right) has defended the coalition's ties with Pakatan Harapan, which has come under criticism from Umno members. GOPENG : Barisan Nasional is confident that the cooperation with Pakatan Harapan (PH) can ensure they retain the seats won in the last general election, its chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said. He said it was based on observations and results of the Mahkota and Ayer Kuning by-elections. He pointed out that BN had secured the Mahkota seat with a majority of 5,166 votes in 2022, but managed to win with a majority of 20,648 votes in the by-election in 2023, thanks to the partnership with PH. 'The same with Ayer Kuning; at the general election, we won with a majority of 2,213 votes, then when the by-election happened, we won with a majority of 5,006 votes. That's the type of increase we can see from the cooperation with PH,' he said at the Gopeng Umno delegates' meeting here today. He said the cooperation with PH should be a guide and reflection for leaders and the grassroots as the strategy is sound and suitable to retain existing power. 'We cannot be proud and arrogant and want to go solo. This is the current reality and by cooperating with PH, we can also become dominant in the national political arena,' he said.

Zahid confirms no going solo, Umno to contest GE16 under BN

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi speaking to party members at the Lumut divisional meeting today. (Bernama pic) LUMUT : Umno will not contest the next general election on its own, party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi confirmed today, saying the party will remain a component of Barisan Nasional for the elections. Umno would continue to contest the general election (GE16) under BN's dacing (scales) symbol without sidelining partners such as MCA, MIC, Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah and its unity government partner Pakatan Harapan. Saying Umno had never contested on its own in the past, Zahid dismissed claims that the party's losses in several by-elections were due to its partnerships with other parties in BN and with Pakatan Harapan. '(The suggestion to contest solo) was not only brought up in Kedah — yesterday I was in Johor, and it was the same sentiment, urging us to go solo,' he said at the Lumut Umno divisional meeting today. 'There are resolutions from some divisions implying that our defeats stem from having allies in BN and PH … that we've been at a disadvantage because we did not contest alone,' he said. Yesterday, Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki had also stated that the party would not go solo at the general election as the party had never done so despite the changing political dynamics.
