Ayushman Vay Vandana Scheme settles over 1.06 lakh claims: Govt
In October 2024, the scope of the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) was expanded to include all senior citizens aged 70 years and above, irrespective of their socio-economic status.
Under this initiative, beneficiaries can receive free treatment benefits of up to Rs 5 lakh per year through Ayushman Vay Vandana cards.
'As on date, over 1.06 lakh claims have been settled under Ayushman Vay Vandana scheme since its launch,' Jadhav said.
'A total of 75.41 lakh Ayushman Vay Vandana cards have been created, out of which 32.3 lakh cards have been created for female beneficiaries,' he added.
In addition, the portability feature of AB-PMJAY allows eligible beneficiaries -- including those under the Vay Vandana scheme -- to access healthcare services at any of the 31,466 empanelled hospitals across the country, regardless of their place of residence.
'This ensures seamless and equitable access to quality healthcare for the elderly population nationwide,' the MoS said.
'Vay Vandana scheme beneficiaries can also avail treatment through a vast network of 14,194 private healthcare providers empanelled under the scheme,' he noted.
To ensure quality and consistency in service delivery, the National Health Authority (NHA) issued comprehensive Hospital Empanelment and Management (HEM) Guidelines for the empanelment of hospitals under the AB-PMJAY.
The AB-PMJAY has emerged as one of the world's largest publicly funded health insurance schemes. It has enabled 8.59 crore hospital admissions worth Rs 1,19,858 crore, ensuring access to secondary and tertiary care without pushing families into debt, according to an official statement by the government.
Meanwhile, Jadhav also shared the steps taken to strengthen the district-level health system, such as the Pradhan Mantri-Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM).
'PM-ABHIM has been launched with an outlay of Rs 64,180 crore over five years (FY 2021-26). The mission focuses on strengthening the capacities of health systems across all levels -- primary, secondary, and tertiary care -- to ensure effective response to current and future pandemics and disasters,' the Minister said.
Under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) components of PM-ABHIM, provision has been made to provide support for establishment of 602 Critical Care Hospital Blocks (CCBs) 50/100 bedded in all the districts with population of more than 5 lakhs during the scheme period i.e. from FY 2021-22 to FY 2025-26 including the ICU beds, he noted.

Currently, the hospital has four radiation machines, which were insufficient to meet the demand, leading to treatment delays. To address this issue, two new linear accelerators have now been installed. The Uttar Pradesh government funded one machine with ₹31.63 crore, while Power Grid Corporation of India Limited contributed Rs 26.42 crore under CSR for the other. The operation of these machines is expected to reduce waiting times and improve the quality of life for cancer patients, significantly enhancing the hospital's cancer management capabilities. The Mahamana Cancer Centre has also become the first hospital in Purvanchal to offer robotic surgery for cancer treatment. Min defends show-cause notice to doc
T'puram: Health minister Veena George said on Friday that a probe team investigating the alleged shortcomings in the urology department of Thiruvananthapuram Govt Medical College Hospital reported that a part of costly equipment in the department was missing. The probe team was set up following urology head Dr Haris Chirackal 's revelation about the lack of medical equipment and emergency facilities at the MCH. Veena stated that a departmental inquiry would be conducted as the missing part of the medical equipment, brought using an MP's fund, might have been stolen. If necessary, a police complaint would be registered after the departmental inquiry. The public revelation by Dr Haris, known for his integrity and commitment to patients, has put the health department and the govt in a tight spot. Ever since Dr Haris tried to expose the poor facilities and their grave impact on patients, the govt's response to Haris remained mercurial. Veena mentioned that the show-cause notice issued to Dr Haris was part of the routine procedure. The notice was served based on the probe team's findings that the senior doctor's open criticism of the department and the system in place amounted to indiscipline and a violation of the code of conduct for govt employees. The health department's additional chief secretary issued the notice asking him to show reasons why action should not be taken against him for criticising the govt in violation of the Kerala Government Servants' Conduct Rules , 1960, causing disgrace to the govt. Meanwhile, Dr Haris told reporters that he would submit the reply to the show-cause notice next week. On the allegation about missing equipment, Dr Haris said nobody should play with the lives of poor patients. He mentioned that the doctors who were in the probe team were known to him for years and they would not put him in a bad light. Will oppose move against doc: Opposition leader Meanwhile, opposition leader V D Satheesan said the UDF would fight the move to initiate action against Dr Haris. "The opposition will strongly react against the unfortunate situation where a doctor is being persecuted for speaking the truth. A doctor who revealed the happenings in the health sector should not be made a scapegoat. Instead of using his revelations positively, there is an attempt to hunt him down. The govt is taking steps to ensure no other doctor speaks out. The govt has twisted the situation to the extent of accusing the doctor of theft," Satheesan said. "In the past two years, the govt owes Rs 1,100cr to the medical services corporation. The payments from previous years are also pending. As a result, no major company is supplying medicines," he said. On the controversy in Kerala University, Satheesan said, "The govt should resolve the issue between the chief minister and the governor. Two of the participants in the RSS's Gyan Sabha were appointed by the Pinarayi govt." On the construction of houses for landslide survivors in Wayanad, Satheesan said Congress and the League will build a hundred houses each. "Why hasn't the govt utilised the Rs 742cr? They are not even paying rent. No assistance, including medical aid, is being provided. Not a single house has been built. I handed over the keys to 14 houses built by a private organization," he said.

79.71 ABHA accounts created, 65.09 crore health records linked: Govt to Lok Sabha
New Delhi: As of July 28, 2025, a total of 79.71 crore accounts for the Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) have been created, and around 65.09 crore health records have been linked to it, Minister of State for Health Prataprao Jadhav told the Lok Sabha on Friday. In a written reply, he stated that around 4.17 lakh health facilities have been registered in the Health Facility Registry (HFR), and approximately 6.76 lakh healthcare professionals are registered on it. The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) has been launched with an aim to create an online platform enabling the interoperability of health data within the health ecosystem to form a longitudinal electronic health record of every citizen, Jadhav said. He clarified that details regarding whether health facilities are located in urban or rural areas are not captured during the registration process of the HFR. Currently, there are 3,20,973 healthcare facilities equipped with ABDM-enabled software, and the number of districts hosting these facilities is 771. To address areas with poor internet connectivity, the ABDM includes provisions for assisted modes. For example, an offline mode for creating ABHA accounts has been implemented to facilitate registration where internet access or hardware availability is lacking. The National Health Authority , which oversees the implementation of ABDM, is collaborating closely with states to ensure effective rollout of the mission, the minister noted. A public dashboard [ has been set up to track the progress of the different KPIs [key performance indicators] associated with ABDM. This dashboard has drill-downs to the state, district and hospital levels and therefore, helps in the assessment of the implementation of ABDM. The government has taken various steps to ensure that the benefits of the mission reach every citizen. The digital health ecosystem created by ABDM supports continuity of care across primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare in a seamless manner, Jadhav mentioned. It also enhances the availability of healthcare services, particularly in remote and rural areas, through various technological interventions such as telemedicine . The eSanjeevani is a national telemedicine service operational in 36 states and union territories (UTs), aimed at achieving universal health coverage (UHC), Jadhav stated in his written reply. It is implemented in two variants: eSanjeevani AB-HWC and Ayushman Arogya Mandir, a provider-to-provider telemedicine platform, and eSanjeevani OPD, a patient-to-provider telemedicine platform which operates on a hub-and-spoke model. As of 28 July 2025, eSanjeevani has served over 39 crore patients. The service has been operationalised through 1,34,029 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (erstwhile health and wellness centres) which serve as spokes, supported by 17,568 hubs and over 719 online OPDs staffed by over 2,24,528 doctors, medical specialists, super-specialists, and health workers engaged in telemedicine, he said. Furthermore, to address the network connectivity issues, state governments are collaborating with telecom providers to extend broadband coverage to the Ayushman Arogya Mandir sub-health centre level, Jadhav added.
