The Central Government is gearing up for the implementation of the 8th Pay Commission, which will overhaul the pay structure, allowances, and pensions of nearly 1 crore central government employees and pensioners. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw earlier confirmed the formation of the commission is expected by January 2026.
What Is the 8th Pay Commission?
The Pay Commission reviews and recommends changes in the salary structure, allowances, and pension benefits of central government employees. The 8th Commission will revise key elements such as:
Basic Pay
Dearness Allowance (DA)
House Rent Allowance (HRA)
Transport Allowance (TA)
It will benefit over 50 lakh government employees and around 65 lakh pensioners, including defence personnel.
When Will It Be Implemented?
While the Commission is expected to be formed in early 2026, reports suggest recommendations may be submitted by the end of 2025. However, the actual implementation could be pushed to FY27, depending on how quickly the Terms of Reference (ToR) are approved and the report is finalized.
Past trends show such delays are common—the 7th Pay Commission was announced in 2014 but implemented in 2016.
How Much Salary Hike Is Expected?
Although official numbers are awaited, industry estimates predict a 30–34% salary hike, in line with earlier trends and recent tax cuts worth ₹1 trillion planned for FY26.
Current minimum basic salary: ₹18,000
Expected minimum post-hike salary: ₹51,480
Estimated government expenditure: ₹1.8 lakh crore
The fitment factor, which was 2.57 in the 7th CPC, plays a critical role in determining the revised pay. A higher fitment factor will result in a proportionately higher basic pay.
Understanding the Salary Structure:
Basic Pay: Fixed and based on pay level (≈51.5% of income)
DA (Dearness Allowance): Adjusted for inflation (≈30.9%)
HRA (House Rent Allowance): Location-based rental support (≈15.4%)
TA (Transport Allowance): For commuting expenses (≈2.2%)
For example, an employee earning ₹18,000 basic pay with 50% DA would receive ₹9,000 as DA, bringing the total to ₹27,000—excluding other allowances.
The 8th Pay Commission is set to bring substantial relief and salary upgrades for lakhs of government employees and pensioners. While January 2026 is a tentative milestone, actual rollouts might stretch to FY27. Keep an eye on the official ToR and recommendations for precise updates.

VISAKHAPATNAM: Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal on Monday inaugurated the second Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation ( BIMSTEC ) Ports Conclave here, stressing that India aims to emerge as a global maritime hub . Hosted by Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA), the two-day conclave is themed as 'Navigating the Future: Blue Economy, Innovation & Sustainable Partnerships', bringing together ministerial delegations, port authorities, maritime experts, and business leaders from BIMSTEC member countries. "Prime Minister's Vision 2030 and 2047 aims to make India a global maritime leader," said Sonowal, addressing the conclave. He said the BIMSTEC Ports Conclave stands as a springboard to unlock the immense potential of blue economy from the Bay of Bengal region. "Under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi , India has a "Neighbourhood First" policy and in this sees BIMSTEC nations as key partners in regional prosperity," said Sonowal. Live Events "We want this platform to enhance collaboration among all member nations for strengthening port led industrialisation, digital integration and skill development which in turn boost cruise tourism, and foster coastal economic zones," he said. According to the minister, BIMSTEC member countries--India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand--should aim to create a seamless and efficient network of ports that could serve as engines of growth. Through joint feasibility studies, PPP (Public Private Partnership), and skill development of maritime workforce, Sonowal said BIMSTEC can transform the region into a thriving hub of global trade, tourism, and sustainable economic progress. Further, Sonowal said a BIMSTEC Sustainable Maritime Transport Centre is going to be established under the Indian Ocean Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Maritime Transport (IOCE-SMarT) at the Maritime Training Institute in Powai, Mumbai. He inaugurated multiple projects in the port, such as new oil refinery berth-2, fire fighting facilities at OSTT Berth, new port operating system, vessel traffic management system (VTMS) and others. Moreover, he laid the foundation stone for the construction of B-Ramp in the port area, finger jetty and wharf in fishing harbour, two additional breasting dolphins at OSTT and others.

Visakhapatnam: Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal highlighted that Prime Minister's Vision 2030 and 2047 aims at making India a global maritime leader. Inaugurating the second edition of the BIMSTEC Ports Conclave 2025 in Visakhapatnam on Monday, he emphasised accelerating growth through BIMSTEC cooperation, developing a maritime dashboard for project monitoring, promoting PPP models in port infrastructure, encouraging cruise tourism, and advancing coastal economic zones. 'Together, we sail towards a connected, resilient, and prosperous BIMSTEC maritime future,' he stressed. Speaking on the occasion, Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shantanu Thakur underlined the importance of BIMSTEC in bridging south and Southeast Asia and opportunities it presents in realigning global supply chains. Addressing the gathering, Visakhapatnam MP M Sribharat stated that under the leadership of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, port-led development will accelerate in the state. He mentioned that the state is currently developing four new ports and proposed to establish a port every 50-km along the coastline. In his keynote address, secretary general, BIMSTEC Indra Mani Pandey presented the BIMSTEC Vision 2030, which provides a structured roadmap for cooperation. He informed that 267 projects under the BIMSTEC master plan for transport connectivity are underway. He proposed setting up a BIMSTEC Centre of Excellence in Maritime Transport in Visakhapatnam and discussed initiatives like real time cargo tracking and green port practices. Secretary, MoPSW TK Ramachandran spoke on bridging infrastructure gaps, overcoming fragmented logistics, and improving the use of maritime routes. He highlighted the one nation-one port process for process standardisation, a BIMSTEC-wide maritime skill certification system and measures to boost coastal shipping and cruise tourism. Later during the media briefing, Sarbananda Sonowal was all praise for Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu for his visionary support to the maritime sector, in the areas of ship building and state port development in particular. Later, he lauded the potential of the Visakhapatnam Port and appreciated the efforts of chairperson, VPA M Angamuthu for positioning the port as a top performer among major ports in the country. Speaking on the occasion, Angamuthu highlighted Visakhapatnam's strategic maritime significance and called for collaboration in port-led industrialisation, digital integration and maritime skill development. The Union Minister laid foundation stone for various ensuing projects, including construction of B-ramp in port area for Rs 33.49 crore, construction of finger jetty and Wharf in fishing harbour Rs 32.61 crore, development of public promenade near cruise terminal for Rs 15.90 crore. Later, Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated a host of projects such as commissioning of new oil refinery berth-2 to the tune of Rs 42 crore, firefighting facilities at OSTT berth for Rs 27 crore, covered storage shed at Rs 22.50 crore, vessel traffic management system for Rs 15.83 crore, etc., The conclave witnessed participation of representatives from seven BIMSTEC nations, including Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand and the host nation India.

BENGALURU: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, complaining about him not being informed about the inauguration of state's longest cable bridge at Sagar in Shivamogga that was opened by Union Minister for Highways and Transport Nitin Gadkari on Monday. The CM stated that the state government places on record its protest against such non-cooperative action. 'I do hope that all central ministers will be strongly advised to refrain from such discordant acts in the future,' he said. The CM stated that organising any programme in the state without consulting the state government violates the protocol. It is also unusual that the name of a former chief minister was mentioned before the names of deputy chief minister, Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly and chairman of state Legislative Council. The programme was held in spite of the state government expressing its disagreement. This shows sheer arbitrariness and defies the very spirit of cooperative federalism, which has always steered the Centre and state relations as per the mandate of our Constitution, he added. The CM said the foundation stone laying function, dedicating five National Highway projects of 88 km with an investment of over Rs 2,000 crore, was held on Monday by the ministry of road transport and highways at Sagar in Shivamogga district. Work on bridge unfinished, CM tells PM 'After coming to know about this programme through other sources, I had personally written to the Union Minister on July 11, requesting him to postpone the event,' Siddaramaiah stated. The CM also complained that the programme in Sagar was arranged without consulting the state government and the chief minister's name too was mentioned in the invite. 'Though the minister agreed to postpone the programme on July 11, to our dismay, the function has taken place. Hence I am bringing the serious breach of protocol to your knowledge,' he told the PM. He also mentioned that this bridge was initially conceptualised by the state government in 2013 and subsequently implemented by the central government. He said as per the technical report, the work has not been completed and the inauguration should not have taken place.
