Maggie Q Shares How Nikita Burnout Steeled Her for Taking Ballard Lead, Teases Reunion With Noah Bean

Ordered to series in November, the new entry in the Bosch TV universe finds Detective Renée Ballard running the LAPD's new cold case division — a poorly funded, all-volunteer unit that operates out of an inglorious basement and is saddled with the largest case load in the city.
The Ballard cast also boasts Courtney Taylor (Insecure) as Samira Parker, a wary ex-cop who returns to the force at Ballard's behest; John Carroll Lynch (Big Sky) as Thomas Laffont, Renée's former partner who un-retires to help her out; Michael Mosley (always Castle) as Ted, a reserve officer who is assigned to the unit to keep an eye on Ballard; Rebecca Field (All Rise) as Colleen, an enthusiastic (and eccentric) volunteer; Victoria Moroles (Teen Wolf) as Martina, the team's savvy legal intern; and Amy Hill (Magnum P.I.) as Ballard's spunky grandma, Tutu.

TVLINE | I stumbled into a rewatch back in May, and you wouldn't believe this: In Episode 4, the president deployed the National Guard to Michigan, the governor's wishes. Can you ?[Laughs] Well, also people didn't believe that 'designated survivor' was a real thing. They thought [the concept] was made up, and it actually isn't.
TVLINE | When you and I spoke about it eight years ago, you suggested that was a solace at the time for some people.Mmm-hmmm. Absolutely.
TVLINE | Harry Bosch famously says, 'Everybody counts, or nobody counts.' Is that equally true for Ballard, who is trying to get closure for people by solving cases that are five, 10, 20 years old?That is the line for Bosch, and something that I feel is true for most detectives. In Ballard's world, [her mantra] is, 'Dig down,' right–
TVLINE | Ergo the tiny shovel on her key ring.Yes, she keeps reminding herself to truth-seek, to keep going, keep digging. Even when you think you've dug enough, go further. I think she's just getting to 'Everybody counts, or nobody counts,' because in her eyes, everyone does count, especially in the Cold Case Unit, and especially these families that are waiting for closure and whatever peace she can give them. It's a great motivation for her, for sure.
TVLINE | In that respect, is this almost a more 'pure' version of a detective character to play, because of that motivation? I think so. It's weird, because with cold cases there's no obvious urgency, and yet there is — because there's still a family waiting for answers, and they're waiting for you to care enough to continue to 'dig,' as we talked about. We get to explore a lot of that with victims' families in the show, we get to see what they go through and how long they wait, and what that does to their lives.
These real-life detectives, a lot of what I've gotten from them is that they take that very personally, the family that's waiting for answers, and so yes, I think it does lend itself to this 'purity' of desire to help relieve that. I've seen that in many homicide detectives, as well as cold case detectives.
TVLINE | Renée has an eclectic assortment of individuals working with her there in the basement. Which character dynamics are you most excited for people to see?Oh, gosh…. I love them all, in such different ways. Obviously the friendship with Parker, and the history that she has with Laffont and his care for her…. The way that she's trying to balance these volunteers is just bananas for her, because she's never had to lead a motley crew of people through something that's actually very serious. They're underfunded, forgotten… there are all these things that she's up against.
TVLINE | ' don't tell me you think your psychic' [as she tells one volunteer].[Laughs] Isn't that the best? It's like herding cats, you've got to rein these people in. They all have good intentions, but that doesn't mean they're on the right track, so Ballard has to pull together all of these personalities — coming from ego, coming from their heart, coming from retirement…. Her trying to balance all of that makes for some levity in moments, but it also gives you some sympathy from the perspective of a person who is just trying to make everything work. It's not as easy as it looks!
TVLINE | I wasn't keeping track of the casting, and boom, there in the first episode, Noah Bean walks in as a councilman who's riding Ballard to solve his sister's murder case. What was it like reuniting with your co-star?Oh, I love Noah. He's such a quality actor. There were three people they were considering for that, and I may have told them that I really enjoy working with him and that he'd actually play the role perfectly. And he did — he knocked it out of park and he got the role. He's featured in the trailer, so a lot of people started going, 'Wait a minute, Nikita and Ryan Fletcher are back together?!' [Laughs] That was kind of cool.
TVLINE | Was Shane West a runner-up for the role?He was not. [Laughs] Shane West as a city councilman is a little less believable than Noah Bean.
TVLINE | Which of your past TV roles do you wish you'd gotten to play longer?[Thinks a minute] None of them…? I was burnt out. I enjoyed Nikita so much [but] after four years, I was so burnt out, because I approached it with movie energy, I approached it very idealistic. I was so naive to think that I was going to be able to carry the show for 10 months [out of the year], and know how to do that.
One of the producers, he had worked on Buffy [the Vampire Slayer] for seven years and saw what [Sarah] Michelle [Gellar] had gone through. He sat me down and said, 'Maggie, do you know what you're in for?' And I'm like, 'I'm a hard worker! I have a great work ethic!,' thinking I could just will it and give everything. The reality is I was too young to know how to pace myself, and where to give and where to pull back.
Now that I'm older and I've been No. 1 [on the call sheet] several times, I have the patience and the wisdom to know how to do that. With Ballard, it's been invaluable, because without that [experience] I would never know where the push and pull began and ended.
TVLINE | That's what , that being the 'The' in a title — , — can be exhausting.Oh, my goodness. The one-hour drama is the hardest job in Hollywood. It is really, really exhausting.

City of Wilkes-Barre holds Old-Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration
Jul. 5—WILKES-BARRE — The United States' 249th birthday was observed under the sun at Kirby Park on Friday with the city's Old Fashioned 4th of July Celebration. Food and craft vendors, amusement rides, carnival games, musical performances, and an enormous firework display in the evening were open to the crowd, which came from a variety of areas to celebrate American independence in Wilkes-Barre. The United States Army Field Band performed a free concert on Tuesday, July 1, at the F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts, and, earlier on July 4, the traditional Bernie's Run benefited the Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA. At the free concert, veterans in the audience were saluted for their service. It's these kinds of community actions that Mayor George Brown considers when thinking about the Fourth of July. "Today, seeing everybody out and enjoying the beautiful day, knowing that today we're going to have great music, great vendors, and then, at the end, we're going to have a great fireworks display... That'll be the culmination of the Independence Day weekend...," Brown said. "I'm very proud to be an American." Brown, who noted that his father served during World War II in the South Pacific, was chatting with passersby throughout the afternoon, whether they were from the city or not. "What happens in Wilkes-Barre pulls in people from different townships," Brown said of the all-encompassing nature of the Old-Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration. David Harter, of Mountain Top, was one of the residents who came to Wilkes-Barre from elsewhere in Luzerne County. The main draw to Kirby Park was the music. "The groups," Harter answered when asked about why he chose to come to the Wilkes-Barre for the Fourth of July for the second year in a row. Triple Fret, Eddie Day & TNT, Fuzzy Park, and the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic were on Friday's performing schedule. "The only suggestion that I would have is to put some shade trees out there," Harter added, pointing to a large sunny spot in the field in front of the Kirby Park stage. In addition to the musical performances, Harter was looking forward to the fireworks at night and the assortment of food options situated behind him. "I think after we're done listening, we're going to do a walk-through to check out the vendors," he said. Other celebrants came from even further away to experience Wilkes-Barre. Kenneth Jones, of New York, said he walked around Kirby Park and the River Common on Thursday night, and realized that Friday would be an exciting day for the community. That's why he was back for the holiday, keeping cool in the shade and watching over the Kirby Park pond. Jones said that most of his time in Northeast Pennsylvania has been spent in the Poconos, but is now realizing that Wilkes-Barre has a lot of history and nature to explore. In the context of the modern era, the admirable bonding displayed by the people in Kirby Center for the Fourth of July taps into some much-needed community-building. "We were just saying every community should have it," Jones said of the Fourth of July celebration. "It brings community together. Especially in the times we're living in now, we need all the community fun we can have while we can have it."

‘Jurassic World: Rebirth' Defies Rotten Tomatoes, May Make A Billion Dollars
Jurassic World Rebirth If you're wondering why they're continuing to make Jurassic Park movies over and over again despite the quality being consistently sub-par, look no further than Jurassic World: Rebirth, which is now mirroring the box office haul of the last poorly reviewed Jurassic Park movie, Jurassic World: Dominion. Box office estimates for Jurassic World: Rebirth continue to climb. The film did $25 million in Thursday previews, and that will rise on Friday. The outpacing of expectations indicates that Rebirth may end up nabbing a $145 million opening in the US. Why is that number key? Because a $145 million haul would exactly mirror the domestic opening weekend of Jurassic World: Dominion, which went on to make $1.001 billion by the end of its global run, almost two-thirds of that outside the US. So, if the figures hold, Rebirth might hit that as well. This is a prime example of a split opening between critics and audiences, where lower critic scores have little effect on audience enjoyment and a big box office. The split of these two movies on Rotten Tomatoes sits at: The success of Rebirth is additionally impressive because the series has switched over from its core cast of Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard to being led by Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey. Great actors, but generally not thought of as massive box office draws, despite their fame. Jurassic World Rebirth If you look back even further, even lower audience scores cannot stop the Jurassic Park behemoth. 2018's Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom got a 47% critic score and an also-bad 48% audience score. Want to guess how much money it made? $1.3 billion. The original Jurassic World, which was well-liked by both groups, made $1.67 billion. The point being, audiences are going to show up for a Jurassic Park movie (now Jurassic World) no matter what. Yes, the box office has 'dropped' over time, but…dropped to a billion dollars. Few other franchises can boast that, and Jurassic Park has outlived the box office runs of most recent Marvel and Star Wars films at this point. It is not really a question at all whether another Jurassic World movie will be made, and best guess is probably another three years from now. Whether it stars these current actors remains to be seen, as it could be the start of another Pratt multi-film run led by Johansson. Given its performance, I'm sure everyone would love to return for more, including its director, Gareth Evans, where this is his first Jurassic film after directing several monster movies before this, including Godzilla. Jurassic World: Rebirth is a huge hit once again proving that critics don't always matter (somewhat of a bummer as a critic myself, but it's true). Cory Hayes of notes that WWE is planning a battle royal for Evolution 2, with the winner receiving a title shot at Clash in Paris. He also claimed Roxanne Perez is expected to officially be crowned tag team champion alongside Raquel Rodriguez and they will defend those titles at Evolution 2 in a triple threat match. One more from Bodyslam on Evolution 2: there have been internal talks to do Rhea Ripley vs. Iyo Sky for the women's world championship at the show. Fightful Select, meanwhile, says WWE is working on bringing in Trish Stratus for Evolution 2, including possibly working a match. Fightful also says Otis recently underwent arthroscopic elbow surgery to figure out exactly what the issue is and he's not currently expected to miss much time but that could always change.
