Panthers 2025 training camp tracker: Top takeaways and observations from Day 5
Here are the top takeaways and observations from Monday's (partially heated) outing of training camp . . .
Activated
Before the start of practice, the Panthers officially activated defensive lineman Bobby Brown III and punter Sam Martin from the active/non-football injury list.
Both Brown and Martin were dealing with minor hamstring injuries. They are now cleared to return to the field.
T-Mac hits back
Rookie wideout Tetairoa McMillan was bested by starting cornerback Mike Jackson during one-on-one drills at Saturday's session. But the eighth overall pick got his lick back on the veteran this morning . . .
Head coach Dave Canales talked about McMillan's breakaway speed.
"He plays fast," Canales told reporters. "That was kinda going back to his film from Arizona. His play speed is what you look at. And yes, we take into consideration what the 40 time looks like. He ran a 4.5. He's fast. But he's a tall guy. And a lot of times, those guys, their stride builds up as they get going—in particular when he's running across the field. He can pretty much separate and run away from anybody, regardless of what the 40 time says."
Quarterback Bryce Young then talked about McMillan's spectacular catch.
"Yeah, that was a great job of him going and tracking the ball," Young stated. "It was great coverage, and that's the league. It's gonna be a lot of great corners out there, a lot of contested catches. It was a great job by T-Mac understanding leverage, fighting pressure with pressure, fading out at the last moment."
McMillan also notched a few more impressive grabs, putting a stamp on what was his best showing of the summer.
Still hunting
McMillan wasn't the only receiver who shined on Monday. Veteran Hunter Renfrow also turned heads, continuing his standout offseason with another strong day.
Renfrow, however, knows his journey to the initial 53-man roster is far from over. The former Pro Bowler praised his fellow wideouts.
"We have a bunch of different personalities, bunch of different ages. But amazing," he said. "I think we have a really good group, I think we have a really talented group. It's the deepest I've ever been around. We have seven or eight guys that can comfortably go out there and play and a lot of young guys that are proving they can.
"And so, it just pushes you. It pushes you every day. I think the Bible talks about iron sharpening iron—and that's what it is. And hopefully, we can do that every day and then the other people we have out there can see that and be inspired from that and make every day the best we can."
Canales, who lauded Renfrow for his work again on Monday, did not rule out using the 29-year-old as a returner moving forward.

Fans will pack into Bank of America Stadium in Uptown on Saturday to get their first glimpse of this year's Carolina Panthers team on the field. Carolina Panthers Fan Fest: Open practice, entertainment, and community support Carolina Panthers Fan Fest will be the first opportunity to see the players practice. The biggest news was when head coach Dave Canales said he's playing Bryce Young and the rest of the starters for at least the first two preseason games. This is a big change from last year. The Panthers starters did not play until the final preseason game in Canales' first season. The coach went on to say those reps in-game, even prep the night before, are just too valuable to pass up. Meanwhile, Channel 9 has watched the team the past two weeks. The offense and defense have been back and forth on who won the day. The nod goes to defense with multiple turnovers and Canales even described them as dominant. From here, the focus turns to Fan Fest. Outside of the pandemic, this is the first time in years fans haven't been allowed at training camp. 'Just that gratification of making a play and hearing the fans, making a tackle,' Canales said. Shedeur Sanders Shares Lesson Learned From Speeding Incident
Shedeur Sanders Shares Lesson Learned From Speeding Incident originally appeared on The Spun. Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders lost a good deal of trust and support a few weeks ago when he was pulled over and charged with speeding. On Friday, he finally addressed the issue with the media. Sanders was asked about his multiple speeding tickets today and after initially grinning at the question, he shared what he's "learned" from the experience. The rookie QB said that the lesson he learned is not to drive fast "at all." He said that he'll take it a step further by barely driving these days. "Yeah, I definitely learned not to drive fast at all," Sanders said. "So, I really don't even drive that much anymore. But I really don't drive fast at all. So, I definitely follow the rules and I hope everybody learned from my situation, you know, that not drive fast at all." As good as it is that Sanders learned that lesson, it may not be enough for some fans and would-be supporters. Sanders already joined the organization with questions about his attitude and maturity - questions that he fed into through some of his pre-NFL Draft behavior. It's very likely that a player who was either undrafted or simply not a quarterback might have been cut outright after picking up two speeding tickets in less than three months after being drafted. But the fact of the matter is that Sanders is a quarterback who the team drafted and invested in. He'll get more patience from the organization than other players will. That being said, the ice under Sanders' feet is probably going to start getting thin if he makes another Sanders Shares Lesson Learned From Speeding Incident first appeared on The Spun on Jul 25, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Jul 25, 2025, where it first appeared.
