Locals bear the brunt of Thailand's economic woes

Heat and heavy traffic in Bangkok have forced commuters to rely on motorcycle taxis as a means of transport, as they are fast and cheap.
This is how Somsak Benjawan, a 48-year-old motorcycle taxi driver, has made his living over the years.
But despite the popularity of motorcycle taxis, Mr Somsak is having a hard time earning money like previous times.
"Before Covid-19, I could make more than 500 baht everyday, even a thousand on a good day. Now? Maybe a few hundred on a good day," he said as he wiped sweat from his brow at a waiting spot near a BTS station.
"The gas price goes up, the food price goes up, but the fare stays the same. If it goes up then people would rather walk," he said.
He also faces more competition from online motorcycle taxis and other modes of transportation in the city.
"Now there are Grab drivers and trains while we're stuck with this. I just want cheaper gas and a way to retire someday."
The voices of low-income workers whose lives rely on daily wages like that of Mr Somsak paints a picture of a country currently faced with challenges both from outside and within.
Global trade and geopolitical tensions will harshly affect Thailand's exports, and thus employment and supply chains, this year, said a tripartite group made up of the Thai Bankers Association, the Federation of Thai Industries and the Thai Chamber of Commerce in their economic prediction for the latter half of 2025 issued this month.
They predicted the economy will grow by less than 2% this year after being hit by US tariffs.
Lower Chinese tourist arrivals will also slow down the entire tourism industry this year. Political instability can also affect the 2026 fiscal budget, said the report.
ANXIETY EVERYWHERE
These uncertainties do not escape the attention of ordinary Thais, regardless of their profession or income.
Street food vendor Suwanna Mekprasert, 56, feels her situation has grown more vulnerable.
Thailand's border conflict with Cambodia has been on her mind.
"I hope we don't have to deal with all those things," she said.
She already has a lot of problems to deal with.
"Pork is too expensive now. Sometimes I use a lesser amount of meat, but customers notice," she says with a nervous laugh. "I don't want to cheat them, but I have bills and my grandson's tuition to pay."
In one of Bangkok's older markets, 38-year-old clothes vendor Mr A, whose full name has been withheld, said: "Tourism helps a little, but local people don't shop much. Everyone's saving money."
Competition from online stores and increasing stall rental fees are eating into what little profit he makes, he said.
The country's leadership doesn't give him much hope either.
"It seems like [Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra] won't end up too differently from other politicians with the same last name," Mr A said, referring to the political turmoil the premier faces.
Across town in a modest office building, 29-year-old office worker Thida Suwannasri types endlessly at her desk, already worried about next month's rent.
"My salary has barely gone up in two years. But rent, food and everything else have," she says. "It's exhausting just trying to survive."
She said she barely felt like a young professional trying to build a stable life.
Inside a small electronics repair shop, 51-year-old Chatchai Boonrawd scrolls through messages as he waits for walk-in customers.
"Sales are slow. Everyone's trying to fix old phones instead of buying new ones," he said.
His dream of launching a small online store was shelved due to high shipping fees and steep digital platform cuts.
"Support small businesses. Not just big malls and chains. Not to mention big people with big names. That's how you build the country," he said.
Economic opportunities and social mobility are no longer a thing in Thailand, Mr Chatchai said.
"I am half a hundred years old and the only thing I see so far is rich people getting much richer while poor people are dying to scrape by," he added.

China's expansion of visa-free entry to nationals from dozens of countries appears to have yielded substantial results, with tourists arriving in droves from overseas and providing a much-needed boost to the country's consumption in the first half of the year. Shanghai, the country's financial hub, saw 2.6 million visits from abroad in the first six months of 2025, up 44.8% year-on-year, according to local authorities. About 1.4 million of them entered China under a visa-free policy, more than three times the figure observed in the same period last year. South Korea, Japan, the United States, Thailand and Russia were among the top sources of foreign arrivals, and the city's Pudong International Airport was top-ranked in the country for overseas traffic with 2.37 million entries. The national capital of Beijing saw over 840,000 visa-free arrivals - double the figure from the same period last year - out of 1.49 million total entries from abroad. In the southwestern metropolis of Chengdu, 287,000 entries were made under the visa-free policy in the first half of this year, up 120% from the first six months of 2024. The southern island province of Hainan - now designated the country's largest free trade port - saw 663,000 foreign entries and exits, up 48% from 2024. About 89% came under a visa-free scheme; the province allows 30-day stays without a visa for citizens of 59 countries, unique among Chinese regions. James Liang, chairman of China's leading online travel service Ctrip, said the policy has been a boon for travel businesses. "Our inbound tourism has already recovered to 70 to 80% of pre-Covid levels. It could be fully recovered this year," he was quoted by Shanghai-based media outlet The Paper as saying. "There are still some bottlenecks to be addressed. If they are tackled, China's inbound tourism could reach the world's top tier in 10 or 20 years." Beijing began expanding its visa-free entry policy in late 2023 to lure foreign tourists and businesspeople back to the country after nearly three years of strict Covid-19 controls. Many countries, particularly those in Europe and elsewhere in Asia, have received blanket exemptions to visa requirements. Their citizens can visit anywhere in the country during stays of up to 30 days. Others are able to enter without a visa under certain conditions. Most commonly, nationals can enter while on a documented transit stay while travelling between countries or regions. Last month, the National Immigration Administration added Indonesia to this list. Passport holders from those countries can stay visa-free for up to 10 days by entering through one of 60 international ports in mainland China. The scheme, in all its forms, now covers a majority of developed markets as well as much of Southeast Asia, which has strengthened its business ties with China in recent years. In addition to the visa-free policy, the world's second-largest economy has taken other steps to encourage spending among overseas tourists, including by opening more duty-free shops across the country.

With the conflict between Israel and Iran easing, oil demand in China becomes a more important factor affecting global crude prices, as the mainland's manufacturing sector started to recover last month following slow economic growth, according to TOP analysts. The Texas crude oil reference price is expected to range from $60-70 per barrel this week, while the Brent crude benchmark should swing between $63 and $73 per barrel for the period. Oil price fluctuations were a major concern of the Thai government over the past several weeks, especially during the 12-day Israel-Iran war last month, as there was fear that their confrontation would escalate. If Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz, oil transport in the Middle East would be disrupted, which would drive up global oil prices. Thailand is using the Oil Fuel Fund as a buffer against a surge in crude prices. Authorities said earlier they curbed domestic oil prices by collecting fewer contributions to the fund from users of diesel, gasoline and gasohol. WASHINGTON - Donald Trump's aggressive trade policy faces a critical week as the US president races to secure the bilateral deals he promised, ahead of a shifting deadline for re-imposing steep tariffs on dozens of economies. Trump is due to send a first batch of letters to up to 15 trading partners from noon local time (1600 GMT), warning that US levies on imports will snap back to elevated levels if foreign governments fail to reach agreements with Washington. The duties will not bounce back until August 1, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said over the weekend, a move that appears to give more room for dealmaking. Trump imposed a 10 percent tariff on imports from almost all trading partners in early April, but some economies including the European Union were slated to have this rate increase further. As markets plunged at the time, Trump halted the steeper levies to allow for talks. That pause expires on Wednesday. "We are going to have several announcements in the next 48 hours," Bessent told CNBC in an interview Monday. "We've had a lot of people change their tune in terms of negotiations. So my mailbox was full last night with a lot of new offers, a lot of new proposals," Bessent said. He reiterated that higher tariff rates for countries would not return until August 1.
