Peter Jackson Not Retired from Movies, Focused on Bringing a Giant Bird Back from Extinction
'Lords of the Rings' Oscar winner Peter Jackson has not directed a narrative feature film in more than a decade.
The director presented his last feature, 'The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,' in 2014. Since then, he has pivoted to documentaries with 2018's 'They Shall Not Grow Old' and 2021's 'The Beatles: Get Back.'
Jackson recently opened up to
ScreenRant
about his decade-plus hiatus from feature filmmaking.
'No, no. I'm certainly not retired,' he said. 'We are currently working on three different screenplays. I'm at the moment writing three different scripts.'
'We are producing and have been writing 'The Hunt for Gollum,' which Andy Serkis is going to direct next year,' he added, referencing the next 'Lord of the Rings' movie. 'I've enjoyed working on documentaries, whether they show I've grown old or not, and obviously the 'Get Back,' The Beatles project. I've enjoyed doing various things with The Beatles, which is great, and that'll probably carry on.'
Recently, Jackson has been prioritizing Colossal, the biosciences company he is a major investor in.
Together with the company's CEO Ben Lamm and archaeologist Kyle Davis, Jackson has been trying to bring the Giant Moa back from extinction.
'To me, de-extincting the Moa would be just as exciting, if not more exciting, than any film I could possibly make,' Jackson told ScreenRant. 'I've made a lot of movies, but to see the Giant Moa brought back would be a level of excitement that I think would supersede anything at this point in time.'
'Colossal Biosciences has announced an effort to genetically engineer living birds to resemble the extinct South Island giant moa – which once stood 12 feet (3.6 meters) tall – with $15 million in funding from Jackson and his partner Fran Walsh.
The collaboration also includes the New Zealand-based Ngāi Tahu Research Centre.'
'The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum' will open in theaters on December 17, 2027.
Jackson and his partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens are producing the new movie.

"Jaws" Star Richard Dreyfuss Hospitalized with Viral Bronchitis
Yara Sameh 'Jaws' icon Richard Dreyfuss was forced to drop out of the SharkCon in Tampa, Florida, this weekend, after he was diagnosed with viral bronchitis. Bronchitis is an inflammation of the lining of your bronchial tubes. These tubes carry air to and from your lungs. People who have bronchitis often cough up thickened mucus, which can be discolored. Bronchitis may start suddenly and be short-term (acute) or start gradually and become long-term (chronic), according to the M ayo Clinic . Acute bronchitis, which often develops from a cold or other respiratory infection, is very common. It is also called a chest cold. Acute bronchitis usually improves within a week to 10 days without lasting effects, although the cough may linger for weeks. Chronic bronchitis, a more serious condition, is a constant irritation or inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes, often due to smoking. It is one of the conditions included in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Dreyfuss delivered the news of his diagnosis and exit in a video post shared to the SharkCon Instagram on Saturday. He said, 'Hello, fellow cons. I am very, very sorry to tell you that I've been diagnosed with viral…viral…What is it?'. His wife, Svetlana Erokhin, then clarified off-screen that the 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' star had been infected with viral bronchitis. 'I've been told by my doctors I cannot fly, and I would have to fly five hours to get [to SharkCon]. I'm terribly sorry because I had planned to be there and had been looking forward to it. But I'm unable to do so," he added, "I don't want to get anyone else sick, and I don't want to get sicker myself. I feel terrible about not showing up, and I feel worse about exposing you to this, apparently, very viral illness.' Dreyfuss headlined Steven Spielberg's 1975 horror masterpiece alongside Roy Scheider and Robert Shaw. In 'Jaws,' the Oscar-winner played Matt Hooper, a wisecracking oceanologist and shark expert tasked with helping Chief Brody track down the vicious man-eater. Lotfy Labib Hospitalized in ICU
Yara Sameh Veteran Egyptian actor Lotfy Labib was hospitalized in the intensive care (ICU) on Sunday after suffering a health scare. He underwent the medical tests to determine the cause of his illness. Father Boutros Daniel, director of the Catholic Centre for Cinema in Egypt, has shared an update on the actor's health, explaining that he suffered a sudden health issue in the past hours that required his transfer to the hospital, where he is in the ICU and banned from receiving visitors. He added that Labib is attached to his fans, loves them, and appreciates them, and asked the actor's fans to pray for him. "The best thing they can do now is pray for his speedy recovery," Labib noted. Labib's manager explained that the acclaimed actor had previously suffered a stroke that affected his movement, leading to his temporary absence from the acting scene. He added that Labib is undergoing regular physical therapy sessions and continuing his daily life normally despite the limited number of projects offered to him, due to his current health condition. On March 29, the veteran actor announced his retirement from acting due to his health condition. "In my current health condition, if I get a role, I won't be able to play it because I prefer that my image remains as it was to the fans," he said. Born on August 18, 1947, Labib is an Egyptian stage, television, and film actor. The acclaimed actor has worked profusely, in many supporting but memorable roles, with over 200 film and television credits. Through many of his screen appearances, Labib has performed admirably and has shown himself to be one of the strongest performers of his generation. read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Arts & Culture Hawass Foundation Launches 1st Course to Teach Ancient Egyptian Language Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream
