Speed limit likely to rise for heavy vehicles on Mumbai-Pune Expressway's ghat stretch

Time of India22-06-2025

Heavy vehicles descending the Bhor Ghat section of the
Mumbai-Pune Expressway
might soon move down the slope a bit faster, with authorities considering an increase in the existing speed limits, officials and transporters have said.
Deliberations are underway to raise the speed limit for heavy vehicles like trucks and buses from the current 40 kmph to 45-50 kmph on the downward incline of the Pune-Mumbai arm, also known as the Khandala Ghat. A decision is likely to be taken soon, they said.
The current speed limit of 60 kmph for cars in the 10-km ghat section is unlikely to be changed. On other stretches of the country's first access-controlled expressway, the speed limit is 100 kmph for smaller vehicles and 80 kmph for heavy vehicles.
The current limit on the ghat section, located between Lonavala in Pune district and Khalapur in Raigad district, results in frequent e-challans as it is challenging for heavy vehicles to move slowly on a sharp downward incline, slows down traffic and causes accidents, they claimed.
After follow-ups and discussions, the authorities have given a positive signal for an upward revision of the speed limit, transporters said.
According to transporters, particularly bus owners, e-challans have increased on the ghat section following the introduction of the
Intelligent Traffic Management System
(ITMS), which comprises several speed-monitoring cameras and other equipment, on the 95-km carriageway.
A vehicle is fined Rs 2,000 for the first speed violation, and the amount increases for subsequent infractions.
Teams from the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), highway police, the state transport department and transporters conducted a joint survey of the ghat section last month to assess the ground reality.
The transporters and a few officials called the current speed limit of 40 kmph for heavy vehicles on Bhor Ghat "unscientific", "unrealistic" and "unfair". Allowing these vehicles to move a bit faster would save time, fuel, maintenance costs and help avoid "unnecessary" e-challans, they said.
Harsh Kotak, a bus operator and leader of the Mumbai Bus Malak Sangh, explained the practical aspect of the challenges faced by drivers.
"In special gear, vehicles can only reach speeds of 7-10 kmph, while it's 25-28 kmph in first gear and 45-47 kmph in the second gear. But if you stay in first gear for too long, the vehicle crawls and disrupts traffic. In the second gear, you either overshoot the speed limit or end up overheating the brake drum due to excessive braking," he said.
Kotak said they have requested the authorities to "scientifically" set the speed limit at 50 kmph. "Around 30 per cent of the e-challans are issued to heavy vehicles on this 10-km ghat stretch, often for speeds between 43 and 50 kmph," he added.
KV Shetty, another bus operator, claimed there are no proper warning signs to alert drivers in advance to slow down.
"Sudden braking often leads to accidents. The government calls it an expressway, but expects vehicles to run at 40 kmph," said the bus operator.
Maharashtra Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar told PTI that they have received several complaints from transporters concerning the speed limits.
He called the concerns valid as it is "practically difficult" for heavy vehicles to maintain such low speeds on the sharp downward slope.
"MSRDC is the agency responsible for decisions regarding the ghat section, while the highway police will finalise the speed limit," Bhimanwar said, adding that his department has already written multiple letters to the highway police.
Additional Director General of Police (Highway) Pravin Salunkhe could not be reached for comment despite repeated attempts.
However, an MSRDC official said the highway police were expected to convene a meeting to discuss the upward revision in the speed limit.
Named after former chief minister Yashwantrao Chavan, the expressway was opened to traffic in 2002. It saw 191 accidents in 2024, according to official figures.

Maharashtra gets it's first e-tractor; registered at Thane RTO

MUMBAI: Transport minister Pratap Sarnaik on Saturday launched the electric tractor for farmers in Maharashtra. He said it will be eco-friendly and economical, and significantly transform the agricultural sector. The first such e-tractor — which Sarnaik claimed is the first of its kind in the country — was registered at the Thane RTO on Sunday morning. 'Designed primarily for agricultural operations, e-tractors require only Rs 300 to plough one acre, whereas diesel tractors cost between Rs 1,200 to Rs 1,500. This reduction in operational costs, combined with lower maintenance requirements, offers substantial daily savings for farmers,' Sarnaik said. Sarnaik highlighted the government's target of achieving 20–30% electric vehicles on roads by 2030. To support this initiative, the government plans to offer toll exemptions and direct subsidies for electric vehicle purchases, benefiting farmers who buy e-tractors. The Late Annasaheb Patil Economic Development Corporation might provide interest-free loans for e-tractor purchases, he said. 'E-tractors offer substantial advantages with minimal maintenance costs and 60–70% lower operational expenses compared to diesel variants. The Maharashtra State Electric Vehicle Policy 2025 offers subsidies up to ₹1.5 lakh for e-tractor purchases,' an official said.

Luxury EVs surge 66% in India in 2025 as wealthy shift from ICE cars

India's luxury car market is being reshaped by electric vehicles (EVs) at a faster pace than any other segment, with the country's ultra-rich increasingly opting for clean fuel over internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. According to data from the Vahan dashboard, the share of EVs in the luxury car segment rose from 7 per cent during January–May 2024 to 11 per cent in the same period in 2025, marking a 66 per cent year-on-year growth. This trend extends to the pre-owned luxury car market as well. EVs accounted for 19 per cent of luxury vehicles sold in calendar year 2025 so far—up from less than 5 per cent a year earlier—according to Luxury Cart, a leading player in the used premium vehicle space. A key driver has been a wave of new EV launches by manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi. Further boosting momentum is Jaguar Land Rover's upcoming facility at Ranipet, Tamil Nadu—its largest outside the UK—with an initial annual capacity of 30,000 units, set to begin operations by early 2026. Tesla is also preparing to enter the Indian market with its product line-up. OEMs bullish on EV demand Santosh Iyer, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Mercedes-Benz India, said the market has moved from asking 'Why EV?' to 'Which EV?'. 'I have been driving an EV for the last two years, and I don't miss the ICE vehicle,' Iyer said. 'The Jan–May numbers show a 66 per cent growth in luxury EVs, and Mercedes-Benz has grown by 73 per cent. The GST rate and road tax differentials offer a clear advantage for both mass and luxury EV segments.' He explained that luxury EVs are sometimes 4–5 per cent cheaper than ICE counterparts due to taxation benefits. 'Without this tax difference, customers may not switch to EVs on their own, as EV technology is still expensive,' he added. Better infrastructure, broader range fuel growth According to Himanshu Arya, Founder and CEO of Luxury Cart, range anxiety is easing. 'The launch of new models and improvements in charging infrastructure have boosted customer confidence,' he said. BMW's iX1, priced at Rs 49 lakh, is one such game-changer. Mercedes-Benz has launched the EQA, EQS, EQC and EQS SUV in India. Luxury EV sales rose from 1,223 units (Jan–May 2024) to 2,027 units (Jan–May 2025). Luxury car sales overall reached around 51,000 units in calendar year 2024, up from just over 48,000 in 2023. The industry expects this figure to touch 60,000 units in 2025, bolstered by upcoming launches. 'In 2025 YTD, the overall luxury vehicle market grew 5 per cent, while the electric luxury segment surged 66 per cent. Mercedes-Benz India alone saw 73 per cent EV growth, and BMW Group India sold 1,020 BMW and Mini EVs from January–May 2025—up 110 per cent year-on-year—capturing a 58 per cent share of the luxury EV market,' Arya said. Charging up the grid Audi India now offers access to over 6,500 charging points via its mobile application, and private charging firms like Statiq are expanding aggressively. 'In metros, EV charging points are now available within a one-kilometre radius, and on highways, there are now more EV points than fuel stations,' Arya added. One reason luxury EVs are growing faster is the wider product range in this segment. 'Luxury EV buyers have more model choices, unlike in the mass market where EV options remain limited,' said Iyer. 'Only 30 per cent of showrooms in India have an EV offering. The rest don't even offer customers that option.' Despite the EV momentum, Mercedes-Benz will continue offering all powertrains. 'Our global and India strategy is to let the customer choose. We offer gasoline, diesel, hybrids and EVs. As a responsible luxury OEM, we have to provide choice,' Iyer said.
