South Korea, US wrap up annual military drills, stage joint river-crossing

Al Arabiya20-03-2025
South Korea and the United States wrapped up on Thursday 11 days of annual joint military drills known as Freedom Shield, which included staging a river-crossing exercise close to the heavily militarized border with North Korea.
The militaries of the two countries reaffirmed their alliance and strengthened their defensive posture during the drills, US Forces Korea and South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said.
The river-crossing exercise, which was held in Yeoncheon, an area near the demilitarized zone separating the two Koreas, involved some 600 troops, as well as 100 armored vehicles and aircraft, according to South Korea's defense ministry.
'This training provided an opportunity for the brigade soldiers to experience the importance of the ROK-US alliance and maximize the interoperability of river-crossing equipment,' Major Jung Byung-hyuk of the South Korean army said after the river-crossing exercise.
ROK refers to the Republic of Korea, South Korea's official name.
South Korean and U.S troops had built a 180-metre (196.85 yards) floating bridge in order to allow armored vehicles to cross a river, according to the ministry.
'Regardless of politics, when asked the soldiers in these formations both US and ROK are standing side by side ready to support the US-ROK alliance,' Lieutenant Colonel Brent Kinney of the US Army said when asked about the current political situation in South Korea.
South Korea has been suffering its worst political crisis in decades after President Yoon Suk Yeol briefly imposed martial law in December. The Constitutional Court is due to rule on whether to uphold his impeachment by parliament in coming days.
Pyongyang has long demanded a halt to US-South Korea joint exercises, branding them a prelude to an invasion.
North Korea fired multiple ballistic missiles earlier this month, hours after condemning the South Korean and US militaries for launching the drills that the North called a 'dangerous provocative act.'

Egyptian PM directs government to prepare investment package for US firms

RIYADH: Egypt's prime minister has instructed his government to prepare a package of investment opportunities for US firms, aiming to strengthen bilateral relations. In a meeting with his Cabinet ministers, Mostafa Madbouly stated that several opportunities are available, particularly given the significant advantages offered by the country's government to foreign investors, according to Egypt's State Information Service. Egypt is intensifying efforts to attract foreign direct investment as part of its broader economic reform agenda and Vision 2030 strategy for sustainable development. Amid global headwinds and domestic economic challenges, the Egyptian government has launched several initiatives to deepen economic partnerships with major international players, notably the US. One key milestone in this effort was the US–Egypt Policy Leaders Forum 2025, held in May, at which Madbouly announced that over 1,800 US companies are currently operating in the country, generating $47 billion in investments over the past two decades. Discussing the latest Cabinet meeting, the Egyptian State Information Service reported that Madbouly 'highlighted the government's interest in supporting Egyptian-US relations in light of the strategic and historical ties between the two sides, noting the many opportunities for cooperation that could be exploited to support joint collaboration.' The Egyptian prime minister added that his government is keen to remove all obstacles to joint cooperation, as well as to propose specific projects that will be discussed for collaboration in the upcoming period. During the gathering, Egypt's Minister of Industry and Transport, Kamel Al-Wazir, reviewed investment opportunities presented to US companies in sectors such as ports, maritime transport, and industrial zones. Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation Rania El-Mashat outlined Egypt's development cooperation efforts with the US, highlighting successful collaborative programs that contribute to the country's development and further strengthen relations between the two sides. At the conclusion of the meeting, Madbouly instructed all relevant authorities to coordinate on preparing a set of promising investment opportunities and to ensure they are presented to US companies, to boost foreign direct investment in Egypt. Egypt, Germany in talks for €100m debt swap deal International Cooperation Minister Rania Al-Mashat spoke at a joint press conference in Cairo with Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Germany's Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Reem Alabali-Radovan. State Information Service In another major development, Al-Mashat announced that the country is in talks with Germany over a new debt swap agreement worth €100 million ($116.48 million), to be disbursed in two tranches. The first tranche is expected in December 2025 and the second in June 2026, according to the north African country's State Information Service. 'These negotiations reflect the strength of Egyptian-German development cooperation and shared priorities in supporting sustainable development projects,' said Al-Mashat. According to Egypt's Ministry of International Cooperation, the total value of debt swaps between Egypt and Germany would reach €340 million with this new agreement.

Moroccans Call for End to Gaza War, Reversal of Normalization Deal

Tens of thousands of Moroccans protested on Sunday in the capital Rabat against the unthinkable humanitarian conditions in Gaza due to the Israeli war, according to Arab News. The protesters called for the removal of the normalization deal with Israel signed in 2010 under the US-led Abraham Accords. They gathered in the city center, raised Palestinian flags and called for smooth flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza, chanting 'It's a disgrace, Gaza is under fire,' 'Lift the blockade,' 'Morocco, Palestine, one people' and 'no to normalization.' Moroccan protests Since the beginning of Hamas-Israel War in Gaza in 2023, the Israeli strikes have killed more than 57,000 Palestinians and wounded more than 137,000, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. 'Palestinians are being starved and killed before the eyes of the whole world,' said Jamal Behar, one of the demonstrators in Rabat. In April, more than 1,000 people gathered in the Moroccan port city of Tangier and protested against the arrival of a ship believed to be carrying parts for F-35 fighter jets to Israel. Port workers in Casablanca, labor unions and pro-Palestinian organizations stated that the Maersk vessel was transporting US weapons to Israel to support the occupation in its genocide in Gaza. Moroccan protests During the rally, demonstrators seized the opportunity and renewed their demand of cutting diplomatic relations between Morocco and Israel. South Korea viewing plans to improve ties with North Korea

South Korea is studying various plans to improve relations with North Korea, a spokesperson for South Korea's Unification Ministry said on Monday, in response to a media report that Seoul is considering allowing individual tours to North Korea. Koo Byung-sam, a spokesperson for the ministry that handles inter-Korea affairs, refused to comment on a 'particular issue.' But, Koo said he understood individual tours were not in violation of international sanctions. Tourism is one of a narrow range of cash sources for North Korea that are not targeted under United Nations sanctions over its nuclear and weapons programs. South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has pledged to improve strained relations with Pyongyang that have reached their worst level in years. In a bid to ease tensions, Lee suspended anti-North Korea loudspeaker broadcasts along the border and ordered a halt to leaflet campaigns criticising the North's leaders by anti-Pyongyang activists. The president has said he will discuss further plans with top security officials to resume dialogue with North Korea that is technically at war with the South. North Korea recently opened a beach resort in the city of Wonsan, a flagship project driven by leader Kim Jong Un to promote tourism. But, the tourist area is temporarily not accepting foreign visitors, according to a July 16 note by DPR Korea Tour, a website operated by North Korea's National Tourism Administration. North Korea first needs to open the area to the outside world, the Unification Ministry spokesperson said, asked if South Koreans could travel to Wonsan. South Korea once ran tours to North Korea's Mount Kumgang area, but suspended them in 2008, when a South Korean tourist was shot dead by a North Korean soldier.
