Parliamentary panel recommends RRTS link between IGI and Jewar Airports

Last Updated: New Delhi, Jul 22 (PTI) A parliamentary panel has recommended that the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry connect the Indira Gandhi International Airport and the under-construction Jewar airport through the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridors. The Standing Committee on Housing and Urban Affairs, chaired by Magunta Sreenivasulu Reddy, appreciated the efforts of the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) for ensuring multimodal integration of RRTS with other transport modes such as metro rail, railways, inter-state bus terminals (ISBTs), bus depots and expressways. In its report, the committee emphasised that Jewar Airport is expected to become a key transport hub for residents of Ghaziabad, Gautam Budh Nagar, and nearby areas in the future. The growth of dense residential areas, employment opportunities, entertainment zones, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities along the Ghaziabad-Noida-Greater Noida corridor makes it even more crucial to connect these areas through a fast, safe, reliable, and efficient transport system like RRTS. 'The integration of RRTS will not only improve connectivity but will also enhance the ridership and financial viability of the Delhi-Meerut Corridor. It will provide much-needed connectivity to Jewar Airport, a vital node in the region's transportation network," the committee said. The panel also noted that two major transport nodes in Delhi-NCR — Indira Gandhi International Airport and Jewar Airport — are yet to be integrated with the RRTS network. Regarding the IGIA-RRTS integration, the committee acknowledged that earlier it had been informed the linkage would be implemented via the Delhi-SNB corridor. 'However, the DPR (Detailed Project Report) for this corridor is currently being revisited by NCRTC," it said. The committee, therefore, recommended that both airports be connected to the RRTS network to boost regional connectivity and streamline passenger movement. On the matter of public safety and comfort, the panel recommended conducting a study on the impact of vibrations from the Delhi-Meerut RRTS corridor on nearby structures, including residential buildings, offices, hospitals, and educational institutions. It also suggested the installation of sound barriers to minimize disturbance to residents and users of these facilities. 'The installation of sound barriers is important to prevent inconvenience to the public due to the operation of Namo Bharat trains," the committee added. Regarding medical provisions, the committee noted that first-aid services have been established, and NCRTC has partnered with hospitals within a 10-kilometre radius of the Delhi-Meerut corridor for emergency medical support. RRTS personnel have also received training in administering CPR to address health emergencies such as strokes or cardiac arrests, the report said. Delhi govt to hold Industrial Ideathon 2025

Agency: PTI New Delhi, Jul 22 (PTI) The Delhi government said on Tuesday that it will organise the Industrial Ideathon 2025 next month, with the aim of sourcing innovative, student-led solutions to drive industrial growth in the capital. Organised by the Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC) on behalf of the industries department, the ideathon is being co-hosted by the Netaji Subhas University of Technology (NSUT), an official statement said. Announcing the event, Industries Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said, 'Industrial Ideathon 2025 is part of our mission to bring young innovators into the heart of industrial policymaking. Delhi's youth has the talent and imagination we need to solve the real challenges faced by our industries. This ideathon reflects our government's commitment to digital transformation, youth empowerment and inclusive entrepreneurship." Open to interdisciplinary student teams from colleges and universities across Delhi, the competition will accept registrations from July 14 to August 4 via the official website — The ideathon will be conducted in two phases. The preliminary round is scheduled for August 13-14 at the NSUT, where shortlisted teams will participate in an intensive eight-hour challenge and pitch their ideas to a panel of industry experts. The grand finale will be a daylong event that will be held between August 18 and August 20, with top teams from each category presenting their refined solutions. Teams of two to four students are eligible to participate, with the condition that each team must have at least one female member. The ideathon invites solutions across four critical sectors — logistics and supply-chain management challenges in Delhi's industrial clusters, tech solutions for ease of doing business for startups and entrepreneurs, frontier technologies to revamp Delhi's industrial ecosystem and practical innovations to strengthen the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) sector. Sirsa emphasised the government's vision behind the initiative, saying, 'We believe in policy by participation. With this ideathon, we are institutionalising youth involvement in government processes. The collaboration between DSIIDC and NSUT is the first step in a longer journey to make Delhi the innovation capital of India." Over 120 teams from more than 30 academic institutions are expected to take part in the event. All participants will be awarded certificates and the winning teams will be felicitated by senior dignitaries at the closing ceremony. Rupee falls 7 paise to close at 86.38 against US dollar

Agency: PTI Last Updated: Mumbai, Jul 22 (PTI) The rupee pared initial gains and settled for the day down 7 paise at 86.38 against the US dollar on Tuesday, amid uncertainty over the US-India trade deal ahead of the August 1 deadline. Forex traders said, all eyes are now on the outcome of India-US trade talks, especially as the August 1 deadline for potential tariffs on Indian exports draws near. The weakness in the American currency and softening of crude oil prices supported the rupee at lower levels, while foreign fund outflows and a negative trend in domestic equities weighed on the local unit and restricted the upside. At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened at 86.26 against the greenback and touched an intra-day high of 86.22 and a low of 86.41 against the greenback. At the end of Tuesday's trading session, the local unit settled at 86.38, down 7 paise over its previous closing price. This was rupee's fifth straight session of decline since July 16 when the unit had lost 16 paise and ended at 85.92 against the dollar. On Monday, the rupee depreciated 15 paise to close at 86.31 against the US dollar. 'We expect the rupee to trade with a slight negative bias on trade deal talks. However, weakness in the American currency and softening of crude oil prices may support the rupee at lower levels," Anuj Choudhary, Research Analyst at Mirae Asset Sharekhan, said. Dilip Parmar, Research Analyst, HDFC Securities said the rupee depreciated for the fifth consecutive day, driven by risk-averse market sentiment and consistent dollar demand. 'Regional currencies remain range-bound as the dollar consolidates amid geopolitical uncertainties. Near-term, spot USD-INR has support at 85.95 and resistance at 86.70," he added. Meanwhile, the US team will visit India in August for the next round of negotiations for the proposed bilateral trade agreement between the two countries, an official said on Monday. India and the US teams concluded the fifth round of talks for the agreement last week in Washington. These deliberations are important as both sides are looking at finalising an interim trade deal before August 1, which marks the end of the suspension period of Trump tariffs imposed on dozens of countries, including India (26 per cent). If the discussions fail or get delayed, Indian exporters could face fresh pressure — adding to the rupee's challenges. However, if a deal is reached, it could offer a much-needed breather. Until then, the uncertainty is likely to keep market participants cautious. 'Traders may remain cautious ahead of PMI and durable goods orders data from the US this week," Choudhary said, adding that USD-INR spot price is expected to trade in a range of 86.10 to 86.65. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, fell 0.03 per cent to 97.82. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, fell 0.94 per cent to USD 68.56 per barrel in futures trade. In the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex declined 13.53 points, or 0.02 per cent, to close at 82,186.81, while the Nifty fell 29.80 points, or 0.12 per cent, to settle at 25,060.90. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 3,548.92 crore on a net basis on Tuesday, according to exchange data.
