Govt Schools To Get Smart Boards

Time of Indiaa day ago
New Delhi: The Delhi cabinet on Tuesday gave its nod to a proposal for setting up 18,996 smart boards in govt school classrooms. Announcing the decision, education minister Ashish Sood said another proposal to install 2,466 smart boards in 75 'CM Shri Schools' was already at the tendering stage, while 18,996 boards would be set up in phases during the five-year term of govt.

"The work to install 18,996 smart blackboards will be carried out in five phases. A teachers' training module to teach using the blackboards has also been passed in the meeting," Sood said. He added that the cabinet, chaired by chief minister Rekha Gupta, approved more than Rs 900 crore for the digital classroom initiative. Sood said the smart boards would initially be installed for classes IX to XII across the state-run schools in Delhi by 2029-30.
The education minister said that only 799 smart blackboards were installed in Delhi govt schools between 2014 and 2024 from donations received from various organisations under the corporate social responsibility initiative. "You will be surprised to know that Delhi has a total of 37,778 classrooms in govt schools, yet between 2014 and 2024, only 799 of these were equipped with smart blackboards and even those came through CSR donations, not govt funding," Sood said.
He added that unlike past projects, which focused mostly on central and elite areas, the new reforms aimed to take digital learning to schools in under-served areas such as Najafgarh, Narela, Seemapuri, Mahavir Enclave and Kirari.
The minister also dismissed the opposition's criticism over budget allocations, saying that BJP govt did not cut the education budget but prioritised it. "Others posed in front of school buildings for photos, we are investing in classrooms and teachers," Sood said.

Highlighting the alignment of this initiative with the National Education Policy 2020, the minister said the reforms would help promote experiential and personalised learning.
A dedicated training module has been developed for teachers to integrate smart blackboards into their teaching process, he added.
"This is the first major step towards making Delhi's govt schools better than private schools not just in infrastructure, but in pedagogy and learning outcomes as well," he said.
Sood said Delhi govt under Gupta's leadership was committed to delivering "world-class, equitable, and digitally empowered" education to every child in Delhi, not just in showpiece schools, but where it's needed the most.
In an announcement made last month, Gupta said Delhi govt would set up 7,000 smart classrooms in its schools by the end of the year. She added that 175 digital libraries and 100 APJ Abdul Kalam Language Labs offering foreign language instruction in English, French and German would also be made operational in Delhi govt-run schools.

Manipal buys Sahyadri from OTPP; hospital count rises to 49 across India

Bengaluru-headquartered Manipal Hospitals, India's second-largest hospital chain, has acquired Sahyadri Hospitals from Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan (Ontario Teachers'), a global investor with net assets of $194 billion. The acquisition will take Manipal's total bed count to about 12,000. While the deal size was not disclosed, sources close to the development pegged it at around Rs 5,800 crore. It is estimated that OTPP made 2.5-times returns on its investment in Sahyadri. It had acquired Sahyadri from Everstone Capital in August 2022 at a valuation of Rs 2,500 crore. Rahul Mukim, Managing Director, Private Capital, Ontario Teachers', said: 'Our partnership with Sahyadri over the past three years has been focused on unlocking long-term value — investing behind key specialties and medical technology, expanding reach across the state and building institutional processes to strengthen the platform. I would like to thank Abrarali Dalal, the management team and the clinicians and doctors at Sahyadri for their partnership and wish them every success in their next chapter with Manipal.' The acquisition of Pune-based Sahyadri Hospitals will add 11 hospitals to Manipal's network across Pune, Nashik, Ahilya Nagar and Karad, increasing Manipal's total number of hospitals to 49. The deal will further strengthen Manipal's position in western India. IPO-bound Manipal Hospitals is gradually expanding its network. The company has previously acquired Medica Synergy in Kolkata, Columbia Asia's Indian hospitals, AMRI Hospitals in Kolkata and Vikram Hospital in Bengaluru to increase its bed count. In June, KKR invested about $600 million in debt to support Manipal Group's strategic expansion and growth plans. Manipal Education and Medical Group (MEMG) Chairman Ranjan Pai said the acquisition would strengthen Manipal's presence in western India. The hospital chain outbid peers such as Fortis Healthcare, Aster DM Healthcare and other private equity firms to win the race for Sahyadri Hospitals. Dilip Jose, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Manipal Health Enterprises, said: 'At Manipal Hospitals, we are focussed on maintaining a patient-centric ecosystem rooted in clinical excellence and transparency, serving a multitude of patients from all over the country, and beyond. We are delighted to welcome Sahyadri Hospitals into the Manipal family, with its top-rated multi-specialty facilities and world-class doctors. With the strong partnership of our valued stakeholders like Temasek and our other investors, we are excited to grow our operations.' Manipal Hospitals was supported by a team of advisers including Allegro Capital Advisors and Barclays (financial), Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas (legal), Alvarez & Marsal (accounting and commercial), and Deloitte (tax). Manipal Hospitals serves over 7 million patients annually. The company's integrated network has a pan-India footprint of 38 hospitals across 19 cities with more than 10,500 beds. Sahyadri Hospitals, a healthcare network in Maharashtra, comprises 11 hospitals with a total capacity of over 1,400 beds. Abrarali Dalal, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Sahyadri Hospitals, said: 'When Ontario Teachers' invested, our intention was to create a formidable regional player with the infrastructure, medical equipment and clinical excellence to enable high-quality medical care in cities across the region. Backed by strong shareholder support, we've been able to invest over Rs 900 crore since 2022, leveraging our combined expertise to drive the transformation of Sahyadri. We've enjoyed a great partnership with the Ontario Teachers' team and are optimistic about the platform's continued positive impact on healthcare delivery.' Deepak Dara, Senior Managing Director and Head of India, Ontario Teachers', said healthcare is a key investment theme for them globally and in India.

Atchanna terms Jagan's tours deliberate strategy to disrupt peace

Vijayawada: Agriculture minister K Atchannaidu described YSRCP chief Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy's ongoing tours as orchestrated attempts to disrupt peace rather than genuine efforts to address farmers' issues. Speaking to the media after a Cabinet meeting alongside ministers Nadendla Manohar and Anagani Satya Prasad on Wednesday, Atchannaidu dismissed the tours as 'staged like movie sets.' Addressing concerns of Totapuri mango farmers, the minister explained that a bumper harvest of 7 lakh metric tonnes this year, combined with leftover pulp stock, caused prices to plummet. The government intervened, negotiating with pulp industries to buy mangoes at Rs 8 per kg, supplemented by Rs 4 per kg in direct aid. He noted that even YSRCP leaders from Prakasam district praised the move. Atchannaidu challenged Jagan to ensure his associate, Peddireddy Ramachandra Reddy, who owns pulp factories, purchases mangoes at Rs 12 per kg. The minister accused YSRCP of a deliberate plot involving tractors spilling mangoes on roads. He claimed that Prakash Reddy, YSRCP secretary from Chittoor with a 25-acre mango orchard, sold his produce at Rs 12 per kg but orchestrated the dumping of five tractor loads of mangoes from his farm on a service road in Thimbojipalem village as Jagan's convoy approached. Atchannaidu alleged the convoy 'intentionally drove over the mangoes,' calling it unbelievable that a former chief minister would engage in such irresponsible acts for political gain. Atchannaidu also condemned the rude behavior of YSRCP leaders and cadre toward police, citing an incident where former YSRCP MLAs allegedly instructed workers to 'break the hands' of a DSP managing the crowd. He saod that drones were used during Jagan's visit due to fears of disturbances, which exposed the mango-spilling incident. The minister debunked YSRCP's false propaganda of a police lathi-charge, stating that an injury to a YSRCP worker who fell during the rally was being misrepresented. Atchannaidu reiterated the government's commitment to farmers' welfare, accusing YSRCP of exploiting their plight for political mileage. He urged the opposition to engage constructively rather than resorting to disruptive tactics.
