AEW Double or Nothing on May 25 featured a ton of excellent matches, including Mercedes Moné vs. Jamie Hayter, "Timeless" Toni Storm vs. Mina Shirakawa, and Will Ospreay vs. Hangman Adam Page.
However, this wasn't the only professional wrestling event happening that weekend. WWE scheduled both Saturday Night's Main Event and NXT Battleground for 5/24 and 5/25, respectively.

Naturally, fans and experts have begun recognizing WWE's counterprogramming against AEW. And AEW president and co-founder Tony Khan is calling them out.

During the media scrum for AEW Double or Nothing, Khan was asked about WWE constantly scheduling shows against AEW's biggest events.
Khan compared the situation to when Vince McMahon would do the same tactic against Jim Crockett Promotions before it was eventually sold to Ted Turner and became WCW.
"It's pretty consistent," Khan said. "I'd say it's the most consistent event head-to-head scheduling I've seen since Jim Crockett Promotions, so a lot of scheduling that went that way. I can tell you, this will go a lot differently than that did."

This isn't the only comparison a figure from AEW has shared about WWE recently.
AEW star Will Ospreay has controversially stated that when it comes to in-ring work and technical acumen, AEW runs circles around WWE.
"Because we smoke them in every field of wrestling," Ospreay said. "Mate, we're just better."
"Like, I respect them. I respect every single one of them there, they're all vets, they all know what they're doing, they're great at their job, they understand getting people on their feet, but we are so much more of a better wrestling company than them. Our guys smoke them every single day of the week."
They've got good guys like GUNTHER. They've got great guys like Orton. They've got good guys like Chad Gable. I respect all of them. ...But on our worst day, we smoke all of you guys."

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Hardy Boyz have opened up about their recent run with AEW. In a new interview with Ariel Helwani, Jeff Hardy took full responsibility for the team's run not meeting expectations. Jeff cited his personal issues and legal troubles as the main reason for their struggles. He believes those problems prevented them from getting a fair chance in the company. Jeff Hardy Takes The Blame Jeff Hardy was candid about his time in AEW. He feels he never had a chance to redeem himself after his arrest. "I just don't think we ever had a fair chance because of that," Jeff said. "So I blame myself all the time." He stated he understood why AEW might not have wanted to trust him. "I was, 'Oh, God, they can't trust me. I'm just a liability,'" he explained. Matt Hardy On Missed Opportunities Matt Hardy gave his perspective on the situation. He felt that his brother did a good job of proving himself after he returned. Matt also expressed disappointment that AEW didn't capitalize on having all four "TLC legends" (himself, Jeff, Adam Copeland, and Christian Cage) in the company at the same time. "But, yeah, it didn't happen." He spoke highly of Tony Khan as a person and a boss. However, he noted that Khan has a specific "style and choice of wrestling that he likes to see." More news: WWE News: Steve Austin Reveals Real-Life Vince McMahon Confrontation The Hardy Boyz have had multiple, impactful runs in TNA Wrestling. Jeff Hardy found major singles success, becoming a three-time TNA World Heavyweight Champion. Matt Hardy famously reinvented himself with his "Broken" character, a creative phenomenon that took the wrestling world by storm and led to cinematic matches like "The Final Deletion." Together, they also captured the TNA World Tag Team Championship on three separate occasions, most recently in 2024. Years later, they reunited in AEW in 2022, immediately entering a dream feud with The Young Bucks, whom they defeated at the Double or Nothing pay-per-view. However, their AEW run was quickly derailed by Jeff's legal issues and subsequent suspension, from which they never fully recovered their momentum. Despite the initial excitement, their time in AEW was marked by inconsistent booking and injuries before both departed the company. More WWE News: For more on WWE, head to Newsweek Sports.

John Cena's Acting Career Almost Never Happened

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Before becoming one of the most recognizable faces in the world, Cena was just trying to make it in the wrestling business. He started his career in Ultimate Pro Wrestling (UPW) in 1999 before signing a developmental contract with WWE in 2000, where he worked in Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) before his main roster debut. It was during this formative period that someone gave him advice that could have ended his journey before it truly began. While speaking on Complex's GOAT Talk, Cena was asked to share the worst advice he has ever gotten. He stated he wanted to "protect the innocent" by not naming the person who gave him the advice, but he did not hold back in sharing the career-altering suggestion that he ultimately ignored. More news: WWE News: Steve Austin Reveals Real-Life Vince McMahon Confrontation "I'm not gonna give away who gave it to me, because it's the worst of all time. I want to protect the innocent," Cena said before revealing the advice: "You got to drop this wrestling thing." Ignoring that guidance led to Cena becoming one of the most decorated and successful WWE Superstars in the company's history. His decade-plus run as the face of WWE and his numerous charitable endeavors, especially with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, have cemented a legacy that almost wasn't.
