Tighten security: Intelligence agencies to Mizoram govt after Pahalgam terror attack
The official told TOI that the possibility of terror outfits creating law-and-order problems and even attacks by infiltrating through 318km-long Mizoram-Bangladesh border and also through neighbouring states like Assam and Tripura cannot be ruled out in view of the alleged influx of illegal migrants in the two states from Bangladesh.
He said the security along the Bangladesh border has been beefed up after the turmoil in the neighbouring country especially after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted during early Aug last year. Security has also been tightened in southern Mizoram's Lawngtlai district bordering Myanmar ang Bangladesh to prevent possible infiltration by militant groups after the Arakan Army (AA) captured all Myanmar army camps along the western Rakhine state of Myanmar bordering Bangladesh.
In accordance with the Centre's instructions, preventive measures have also been in place to guard the border areas to avert influx of Rohingya Muslims from refugee camps in Bangladesh and also from Rakhine state where the community has been facing persecution from the Myanmar military junta as well as the AA militants.
Situated in a strategic location and surrounded by trouble-torn countries of Myanmar and Bangladesh and also ethnic strife-hit Manipur, Mizoram has become a home for over 41,000 refugees and internally displaced people, including 33,023 people from Myanmar as of Tuesday. There are also over 2,000 refugees belonging to the Bawm community who are ethnic Mizos taking shelter in Lawngtlai district at present.
"The state govt has been exploring all possibilities to maintain peace in Mizoram, which is one of the most peaceful states in the country, despite being flooded with refugees as the state is sandwiched between Myanmar and Bangladesh with which the state is sharing a total 722km-long international border with the two neighbouring countries," a home department official said.

Bengaluru: A family in Govindarajanagar, Vijayanagar, is eagerly waiting for the return of one of its members — Kalu, an 18-month-old Indie dog rescued from the mountains of Arunachal Pradesh. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He went missing on the night of June 28. Three days later, he was spotted near a bar and restaurant in Basaveshwaranagar, around 3km away. However, by the time the family arrived there, Kalu had vanished. Kalu's owner, Kusuma BH, a govt employee, her daughter Harshita, a doctor with the Indian Army, and son Bharat are making painstaking efforts to trace him. Kusuma has announced a reward of Rs 15,000 for anyone who helps in tracing Kalu. Over 500 handbills, featuring Kalu's picture and Kusuma's contact number, have been pasted on walls and distributed among the residents of Basaveshwaranagar, Mahalakshmipuram, Kurubarahalli, JC Nagar and surrounding areas. "Besides, we've taken to social media, seeking help from netizens. But as of now, we haven't heard anything about him," said Kusuma, who works for the public information office. Interestingly, Kalu was found in the hilly terrain of Arunachal Pradesh. Speaking to TOI, Kusuma said her daughter Harshita found him in Dec 2023. "Harshita was working with the army and camping on a mountain. One day, she found four puppies there. They were weak and suffering from some infections. She brought them to her camp and, with the help of a veterinary doctor, nursed them. Unfortunately, three of the puppies died while Kalu survived," she said. Harshita and Kalu grew fond of each other. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "It was she who named him Kalu during her stay in Arunachal Pradesh," said Kusuma. Later, Harshita was transferred to Guwahati, and then to Belagavi in Karnataka this year. "Kalu lived with her in Guwahati. However, she found it difficult to look after him in Belagavi. In Nov 2024, Kalu came to our house here," Kusuma said. According to Kusuma, Kalu goes out for a short walk every night after dinner. "On the night of June 28, he went out but failed to return. Seeing the handbill, a person called us on July 1, saying he had seen Kalu near a bar and restaurant in Basaveshwaranagar. Filled with hope, we rushed to the place, but he had gone by then," she said. Harshita was in Arunachal Pradesh when Kalu went missing. "We hadn't told her about Kalu's disappearance. After searching for two days, I posted his picture in our family WhatsApp group, and Harshita learned about the situation. She took a flight to Bengaluru. I search for Kalu from 5am to 9am, as I have to go to office. But Harshita searches for him all day and returns home late at night," she said.

93% of Bihar voters given enumeration forms, 13.2% have submitted them: EC
Gyanesh Kumar NEW DELHI: With enumeration forms distributed to 93.7% of Bihar's 7.9 crore electorate so far and 13.2% electors already submitting the completed and signed forms, EC officials Saturday told TOI that documents can be added or uploaded by electors whose enumeration forms were submitted with incomplete documentation, right until July 25. July 25 is the last date for submission of the filled-up enumeration forms. "As of Saturday 6pm, over one crore enumeration forms (13.2% of Bihar's electors) have been received. The percentage of forms distributed has also gone up to 93.6%, with 7.4 crore forms given to the electors," an EC spokesperson said. Chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, while welcoming the fast-paced work on SIR in Bihar, said the exercise will be completed as scheduled, with the cooperation of all and 100% transparency. Sources in the poll panel told TOI that where enumeration forms are short on one or more required documents, there shall be a window for the elector concerned to submit them anytime before July 25. "In order to get one's name in the draft electoral roll, the strict condition is to sign and submit the pre-printed enumeration form before July 25. This step will filter out non-existent voters, either dead or migrated ones who are no longer ordinary residents of that assembly constituency," said an EC officer. Though BLOs will give their recommendation on "inclusion or exclusion" while submitting/uploading the filled up enumeration form, the electoral registration officer or assistant ERO is expected to scrutinise the forms "not recommended" by BLOs only after draft rolls are published on Aug 1. As many as 77,895 BLOs are going house-to-house to help the electors fill out their emuneration forms and collect them. In some cases, they are taking live pictures of the electors and uploading them, saving the elector the trouble of getting their pictures clicked. After the draft rolls are published on Aug 1, claims and objections may be filed by political parties or any member of the public until Sept 1. The final electoral roll will be published on Sept 30. Those still aggrieved can file first appeal with the district magistrate and second one with the chief electoral officer.
