China Plans Nationwide Cash Incentives to Boost Birth Rate
China is set to roll out a nationwide financial incentive program to encourage couples to have more children, amid a persistent decline in birth rates and a shrinking population.
According to sources familiar with the matter, who spoke to Bloomberg on condition of anonymity, the Chinese government plans to offer annual cash subsidies of 3,600 yuan (about $503) for each child born after January 1, 2024.
The payments would continue until the child reaches the age of three, as part of a new national policy aimed at reversing the demographic downturn.
This initiative comes nearly a decade after China officially ended its decades-long one-child policy. Despite introducing a two-child policy in 2016 and later allowing families to have up to three children, birth rates have continued to decline.
In 2023, China
recorded
just 9.54 million births, almost half the 18.8 million recorded in 2016, the year the one-child policy was scrapped.
The trend has raised alarm bells in Beijing, as a shrinking workforce poses long-term risks to the world's second-largest economy by threatening productivity and economic growth.
United Nations projections suggest that China's population could drop to 1.3 billion by 2050 and fall further to 800 million by the end of the century, significantly reducing its global economic and demographic influence.
In 2023, China also lost its position as the most populous country in the world to India, underscoring the urgent need for effective population growth strategies.

Lebanon says 1 killed in Israeli strike on south - Region
Lebanon said one person was killed on Saturday in an Israeli strike in the country's south, the latest deadly raid despite a ceasefire between Israel and militant group Hezbollah. An "Israeli enemy drone strike on a vehicle" in Bint Jbeil "killed one person and wounded two others", Lebanon's health ministry said in a statement carried by the official National News Agency (NNA), noting the toll was provisional. Earlier Saturday, the ministry reported that a separate Israeli drone strike wounded one person in Shebaa, elsewhere in the south, with the NNA saying that the raid targeted a house. Israel has kept up its bombardment of Lebanon since a November 27 ceasefire that sought to end more than a year of hostilities with Hezbollah, including two months of all-out war that left the Iran-backed group severely weakened. On Thursday, an Israeli strike on a vehicle at the southern entrance of Beirut killed one man and wounded three other people, Lebanon said. Under the ceasefire deal, Hezbollah was to pull its fighters back north of the Litani River, about 30 kilometres (20 miles) from the Israeli border, leaving the Lebanese army and United Nations peacekeepers as the only armed parties in the region. Sisi Reaffirms Support for Libya's Unity, Sovereignty
H-Tayea Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has reaffirmed Egypt's unwavering support for Libya's sovereignty and unity, stressing the urgent need for all foreign forces to withdraw from Libyan territory to enable lasting peace and stability. President El-Sisi made these remarks during a meeting on Saturday with Aguila Saleh, Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives, which was also attended by Hamid Al-Safi, Political Advisor to the Speaker, and Major General Hassan Rashad, Chief of Egypt's General Intelligence Service.
