Ounahi Dropped to Reserves as Marseille Exit Looms

Morocco World20 hours ago
Moroccan midfielder Azzedine Ounahi looks set to leave Marseille this summer after being left out of Roberto De Zerbi's first-team plans.
The 24-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Panathinaikos, is among six players excluded from first-team plans as the Ligue 1 side reshapes its squad for the 2025–26 campaign.
Ounahi impressed in Greece with five goals and seven assists, and Panathinaikos are keen to re-sign him. They've increased their offer to €9m, but Marseille are holding out for €12m.
Russian side Spartak Moscow had reportedly matched that asking price and offered a generous salary, but Ounahi turned it down, citing concerns over the conflict in Ukraine and Russia's ban from European competitions.
The Moroccan international, who joined Marseille in January 2023 after a standout World Cup, is under contract until 2027. However, with no role in De Zerbi's plans, a summer move appears likely.
Others training with the reserves include Rubén Blanco, Ismaël Koné, Simon Ngapandouetnbu, Bamo Meïté and François Mughe. The club is expected to facilitate exits for all six players during the current transfer window. Tags: Benatialigue 1marseilleOunahiPanathinaikos

Ivan Rakitić Announces Retirement After 20-Year Career

Former Barcelona and Croatia midfielder Ivan Rakitić has officially retired from professional football at the age of 37, drawing the curtain on a two-decade career that took him from FC Basel's academy to the pinnacle of European football. The announcement came via a video on Instagram, where Rakitić described football as 'the greatest gift of my life' and thanked every club he had represented. The Swiss-born Croatian began his senior career at FC Basel in 2005 before moving to Schalke 04 in Germany. His breakthrough came at Sevilla, where he captained the side to the 2014 Europa League title – adding another on his return in 2023. Across both stints, he played 323 matches, scoring 53 goals and providing 63 assists. Rakitić's prime came during his six seasons at Barcelona (2014–2020), where he made 310 appearances and won 13 trophies – including four La Liga titles, four Copa del Reys, and the 2015 Champions League, where he scored the opener in the final against Juventus. Internationally, he earned 106 caps for Croatia and was instrumental in their run to the 2018 World Cup final, scoring decisive penalties in the Round of 16 against Denmark and the quarter-final against Russia. Short spells at Al-Shabab and his boyhood club Hajduk Split brought his career full circle. 'From Switzerland to Spain, Germany, Saudi Arabia, and home again – every step shaped me,' he said. 'Football, you gave me more than I could ever imagine. You gave me victories, defeats, lessons, and friends for life. My love for football will never fade. Thank you, football.' Morocco's Hamid Moudatiir Wins African Glory Championship Title

Moroccan kickboxer Hamid Moudatiir claimed the African Glory Championship belt in the K1 class after a dominant performance at Dakar's Grand Theatre against Ivorian fighter François Mozou. Representing Morocco alongside Morad Laroussi, Moudatiir secured the professional K1 title by the judges' decision after five rounds of action in Dakar, Senegal. Moudatiir controlled the fight with a disciplined kicking game, landing a series of sharp low and high kicks, while Mozou focused on closing the distance to rely on his boxing. The Moroccan fighter knocked Mozou down in both the second and third rounds, but the Ivorian showed resilience and fought on until the final bell. With this victory, Moudatiir becomes the new belt holder in his division. In the same event, Gasmire Diatta defeated Morad Laroussi by judges' decision after five rounds.
