Sayer comeback double seals Matildas win over Argentina

Yahoo02-06-2025
Amy Sayer scored a double in her first Matildas start in 549 days to send off coach Tom Sermanni in winning style against Argentina.
Making a long-awaited return to the starting line-up from a devastating ACL injury, the 23-year-old struck twice in the first half to secure a 4-1 win in front of a record 25,125 crowd at GIO Stadium in Canberra on Monday night.
The Matildas dominated possession and scoring opportunities, as the midfield pairing of Kyra Cooney-Cross and Clare Wheeler outclassed their South American opponents.
But some nervy moments at the back between Steph Catley and Natasha Prior gave the tourists a sniff, with the dangerous Kishi Nunez a persistent threat.
Regardless, their sixth-straight victory on home soil is a happy parting gift to interim coach Sermanni in his final game in charge of the national side before being replaced by former Lyon boss Joe Montemurro, who was at the game.

Australia were buoyed by the return of captain Catley and Arsenal teammates Caitlin Foord and Cooney-Cross to the starting XI.
The trio were rested for Friday's 2-0 win over Argentina following their Women's Champions League triumph.
Sayer opened the scoring in the 14th minute, popping up at the far post to ram home a deflected volley into the far corner after a searching Kahli Johnson cross evaded a sea of players.
Argentina struggled to play through the Matildas' high press and failed to exert any real pressure when the home side had the ball.
But a seemingly innocuous through-ball left Prior all at sea and after misjudging an interception left the door open for Nunez to steal in behind unchecked.
The diminutive No.9 settled herself, opened herself up and with her right foot curled the ball past a diving Teagan Micah inside the far post, ending a streak of four clean sheets for the Matildas at home.
But the home side wouldn't lay down their lead for long.
Foord menaced the visitors all night, constantly harrying the Argentinian defenders in possession and threatening to win the ball high up field.
After nicking the ball near the halfway line, the 30-year-old drove into the Argentinian half before releasing Sayer in behind a retreating opposition defence.
From an unfriendly angle, Sayer picked out the far corner past the outstretched gloves of goalkeeper Solana Pereyra.

As the Argentinians tired in the second half, the chances came thick and fast for the Matildas.
Sayer nearly sealed a hat-trick in the 54th after being sent through by Catley but sprayed her shot from the right high and wide.
Holly McNamara nearly scored her first Matildas goal in the 57th minute but the prolific Melbourne City forward's volley from eight yards out was smartly stopped by a well-positioned Pereyra.
Hometown hero Michelle Heyman, subbed on for Sayer, nearly sent the Canberra crowd into raptures in the 66th minute but was denied by Pereyra with two smart back-to-back saves.
She almost scored again when sent one-on-one with the goalkeeper six minutes later but Pereyra poked the ball away from Heyman's feet, only for it to be turned in by Emily van Egmond.
Heyman finally got her goal in the 83rd minute after Foord again pressured the Argentinian defence into a mistake on the edge of their box, with the veteran squeezing the ball in off a defender from a tight angle.
Debutant Isabel Gomez also managed to get a run late on but failed to make much of an impression with her limited time.
An early concern for Montemurro will be the fitness of youngster Kahli Johnson, who limped from the field late in the first half.

Chile, Peru anxiously await word on Trump's proposed 50% copper tariff

A miner looks out onto section of the El Teniente mine -- the world's largest underground copper mine -- in Rancagua, about 80 miles south of Santiago, Chile. File Photo by Mario Rui/EPA July 9 (UPI) -- U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement of a proposed 50% tariff on copper imports has raised concerns in Chile and Peru, which together account for nearly 40% of global copper production. Copper prices in New York rose an average of 12% after the news, potentially boosting short-term revenues. But analysts warn that if the tariff goes into effect, U.S. demand could drop, pushing prices down and cutting into producer earnings. The proposal was met with caution in both South American countries, as the economic impact could affect trade balances and fiscal stability. Chile could be hit hardest -- its copper makes up 35.7% of total U.S. copper imports. In Peru, the immediate effect is expected to be more limited, with the U.S. accounting for just 2.4% of its copper exports. Although the United States is not the primary destination for Chilean copper, Chile exported about $6.3 billion worth to the The United States in 2024, accounting for 12.8% of its total copper exports. Chile's state-owned mining company, Codelco, has launched an internal review to assess how the tariff could affect its operations and trade strategy. "It's still unclear whether the tariff will apply to all copper products or if exceptions will be made for countries like ours," Codelco Chairman Máximo Pacheco said. A potential drop in copper exports to the United States would reduce foreign currency earnings and tax revenue at a time when Chile having faced a fiscal deficit of 2.9% of gross domestic product in 2024 and public debt climbing to 42%, according to Manuel Viera, president of the Chilean Mining Chamber. "If the U.S. stops being a profitable destination, Chile will need to find alternative markets. Even though Chile exports globally, a sharp increase in U.S. prices could lead to oversupply elsewhere, pushing prices down," said Jorge Montes, a mining law expert. The uncertainty surrounding the proposed tariff could discourage new investment in Chile's mining sector, said Humberto García, president of the Chilean Institute of Public Policy. "If mining companies scale back operations or pause projects, that could have a negative impact on both direct and indirect employment in a sector that drives the economy across several regions of the country," he said. In Peru, the direct impact would likely be more limited. In 2024, the country exported about $705 million in copper to the United States. However, higher-value shipments could take a bigger hit, with about $900 million in cathodes and wire sent to the United States, Peru's second-largest market. "It's not yet clear if the tariff would target only raw copper or also include manufactured goods," said Rafael Zacnich, head of economic studies at ComexPerú. He noted that previous cases have included exemptions for countries like Canada and Mexico. "If they're excluded and we're not, we'll be pushed out of the market," he told the Peruvian daily Gestión. Experts say global demand for copper is unlikely to slow despite U.S. protectionism, meaning Peru could redirect exports to other markets. Still, government officials and trade groups -- including ComexPerú -- have called for action to secure an exemption for Peru under its free trade agreement with the United States. Chile remains the world's top copper producer, and the metal is its leading export, totaling $50.86 billion in 2024, according to the Central Bank. Peru ranks third globally, with copper accounting for nearly 30% of its exports, totaling $23.45 billion last year.

Transfer-linked Barcelona star responds to exit questions

Barcelona star Ronald Araújo on Wednesday moved to draw a line under his future with the club. The subject of Araújo's potential departure has of course been a prominent one in the chatter at Barcelona across the summer to date. Advertisement This comes with a difficult season for the 26-year-old in 2024/25 having given rise to widespread calls for the Camp Nou brass to sanction a sale. To date, no such move has been forthcoming, with Araújo remaining a member of Hansi Flick's squad. And if the latest comments on the part of the stopper himself are anything to go by, this situation is unlikely to change any time soon. After reporting for pre-season training ahead of schedule on Wednesday, Araújo was stopped by a group of fans and journalists upon his exit from The Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper. One such media member made use of the opportunity to ask whether the South American plans to stay put at the Camp Nou this summer.
