State has failed to deal with drugs, corruption & unaccounted cash: Supriya
Supriya Sule
on Monday said she would draw attention of the Centre towards drugs menace, corruption and unaccounted cash in Maharashtra because state govt was not serious about these.
"These issues must be highlighted at the Union govt-level because the state has failed to resolve them. I will do it in Parliament if the state does not give justice in such matters," Sule, the NCP (SP) working president, told reporters after visiting the Sinhagad Road area, facing major traffic congestions of late.
According to Sule, the cash allegedly found in the residence of a state minister would have disheartened Prime Minister Narendra Modi and finance Minister Nirmala Sitaram — the proponents of cashless economy and digital payment systems.
She said it was worrisome for the nation if cash was found at the state-level when the Union govt was trying to focus on digitisation.

"The demonetisation was done to reduce black money. If a bagful of cash is found on such a large scale, an inquiry should be carried out about what happened to the demonetisation," she said.
Sule said if the state decided to fight against drugs, her party would join it. The govt was not doing enough to bring down the menace of drug addiction despite repeated letters to the state to deal with this problem, she said.

The Baramati MP termed the action of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) against her nephew, MLA Rohit Pawar, "vendetta politics". The ED named Rohit in the chargesheet related to the purchase of Kannad cooperative sugar factory in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar by Baramati Agro Limited, owned by Rohit and his family members.
Sule said Rohit's name was not there in the first list of accused. Most of those in the first list joined BJP, she said.
"Names of the original accused have been removed from the list and a new list has been prepared, which features Rohit. He (Rohit) is in the opposition party and raising his voice against the corruption of the govt," she said.
According to Sule, the act of some Congress leaders from Pune joining BJP shows that the latter has no option but to induct them because they are talented. "BJP had made an announcement to make 'Congress Mukt Bharat' (India Congress-free).
But now, most of the Congress leaders are joining BJP," she said.
Sule also condemned the manhandling and thrashing of Praveen Gaikwad of Sambhaji Brigade. "Such attacks are a shame for the cultured state like Maharashtra. It is shocking that action has not been taken against the attackers despite having a criminal background," she said.
The Baramati MP also said she was not aware of the resignation of Jayant Patil, the state unit chief of NCP (SP).

NATO chief says India, Brazil, and China could be slammed by sanctions
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte warned on Wednesday (July 16, 2025) that countries such as Brazil, China and India could be hit very hard by secondary sanctions if they continued to do business with Russia. Mr. Rutte made the comment while meeting with senators in the U.S. Congress the day after President Donald Trump announced new weapons for Ukraine and threatened "biting" secondary tariffs of 100% on the buyers of Russian exports unless there is a peace deal in 50 days. "My encouragement to these three countries, particularly is, if you live now in Beijing, or in Delhi, or you are the President of Brazil, you might want to take a look into this, because this might hit you very hard," Mr. Rutte told reporters, who met with Mr. Trump on Monday and agreed the new steps. "So please make the phone call to Vladimir Putin and tell him that he has to get serious about peace talks, because otherwise this will slam back on Brazil, on India and on China in a massive way," Mr. Rutte added. Republican U.S. Senator Thom Tillis praised Mr. Trump for announcing the steps, but said the 50-day delay "worries" him. He said he was concerned that "Putin would try to use the 50 days to win the war, or to be better positioned to negotiate a peace agreement after having murdered and potentially collected more ground as a basis for negotiation. "So we should look at the current state of Ukraine today and say, no matter what you do over the next 50 days, any of your gains are off the table," he added. Mr. Rutte said Europe would find the money to ensure Ukraine was in the best possible position in peace talks. He said that under the agreement with Trump, the U.S. would now "massively" supply Ukraine with weapons "not just air defense, also missiles, also ammunition paid for by the Europeans." Asked if long-range missiles for Ukraine were under discussion, Rutte said: "It is both defensive and offensive. So there's all kinds of weapons, but we have not discussed in detail yesterday with the president. This is really being worked through now by the Pentagon, by the Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, together with the Ukrainians."

National highways proposed in Kerala now in limbo
Thiruvananthapuram: Two of Kerala's most significant road development plans, including the proposed Kozhikode-Mysore greenfield corridor and the declaration of 12 key road stretches as national highways (NHs), have hit a wall with Centre either stalling or quietly stepping back from earlier commitments. In a fresh representation to Union ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH), state urged urgent revival of both. Govt asked MPs from the state to take up the matter in Parliament. The Kozhikode-Mysore economic corridor, envisioned as a seamless 24-hour greenfield highway bypassing ecologically sensitive areas, was initially backed by National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), which engaged with forest department to finalise an alignment that would skirt major wildlife sanctuaries. However, the state flagged that NHAI was no longer pursuing the project actively—a development it described as "a matter of serious concern. " The proposed corridor was designed to offer uninterrupted interstate connectivity between Bengaluru and north Kerala, particularly vital in light of the night traffic ban on NH-766 and other roads passing through Bandipur and Wayanad forests. Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan personally raised the issue with Union road transport minister Nitin Gadkari during a meeting on Dec 6, 2024 but no follow-up commitments materialised. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo Equally troubling is Centre's failure to act on its earlier in-principle approval to declare 12 important road stretches in Kerala, totalling 484.6km, as NHs. While the directive to foreclose the preparation of detailed project reports (DPRs) came in July 2020, state is now pushing for these road stretches to be revived under the NH network, given that formal notification never followed despite the initial green light. The state's latest appeal underscores that these roads are strategically critical and their upgradation is even more urgent, considering Kerala's overburdened road infrastructure. State currently has just about 580km of NHs under PWD's purview. With one of the highest vehicle and population densities in the country, capacity expansion through centrally funded corridors is being projected as a non-negotiable priority. As these proposals under Bharatmala Pariyojana are being discontinued, state has submitted a fresh set of 17 road stretches covering 1,054km for inclusion in Vision 2047 Master Plan, which MoRTH is currently finalising. These corridors have been identified after a new assessment and reflect the evolving transport and logistics needs of the region, Kerala argues. Adding to its case, govt highlighted that no new major project has been sanctioned for Kerala through PWD's NH wing in the last four years. It urged Centre to include 14 proposed projects amounting to Rs 6,700 crore in MoRTH's current year annual plan, warning that worsening congestion and infrastructure fatigue would continue unless the pipeline was urgently revived. As Centre maintains silence despite multiple submissions, state has now shifted gears politically, urging its MPs to escalate the issue in Parliament in a coordinated push. While the projects themselves may have seen bureaucratic limbo for years, state's current campaign signals that the fight for them is anything but over.
