'I solo travelled 5,000 miles across continent without spending a penny'
A young woman has travelled 5,000 miles without spending a penny - by hitchhiking.
Courtney Allan grabbed lifts from strangers to get from Guangzhou in China to the Russia-Mongolia border, a journey which took 50 days. Courtney, 26, says she feels "incredibly blessed", having seen some "beautiful countries" for free.
'It's (hitchhiking) becoming more common though, and it's such a great way to see the world for free... I feel incredibly blessed. Hitchhiking was so not normal for so long, it didn't even seem like an option," Courtney said.
The Canadian native first experienced hitchhiking in the UK as, in late 2023, she found public transport too expensive to get around during a holiday here. During her three-week visit to the UK, Courtney was able to persuade a driver to give her a lift from Bath, Somerset into Wales.
And she since used this method during a trip to Africa - travelling from Morocco to Cape Town - a distance of more than 8,000 miles, and has now completed the 5,000-mile trip - for free - in Asia.
Courtney, from Toronto, said she has "not yet felt in danger". She continued: "When I think of who I am now, it's an exponential growth from who I was when I first visited the UK two years ago.
"When you're hitchhiking, you're with the people who live in that country. You get a much more intimate experience. It's such a good way to meet local people and get the best things to do in a place. This isn't the stuff you see on TripAdvisor."
Courtney, who documents her trips on her Instagram page @hitchhikercourtney, travelled through 16 countries to reach Cape Town on her African adventure. In that time, she said she spent less than $20 (£15) on transport, of which more than half was spent on a single ferry across the Congo River.
But she didn't have to pay a penny on transport during her Asian journey, which saw her catch rides through China, north through Mongolia to the border of it and Russia. The journey started in May this year, ending this week. The social media influencer continued: "My budget would have gone up by thousands if I had been paying for transport."
She added: "Women are often scared of going out into the world because of the risks. But there is a risk everywhere, every day, no matter what you're doing. You can't let them get the better of you. For me, the benefits of being able to explore the world outweigh those risks."

Juliana Marins, 26, died after falling into the crater of Mount Rinjani, in Lombok, Indonesia. In a text to her mum before her trip, she said she was 'not afraid' A backpacker who tragically died after falling into a volcano in Indonesia sent her mum a heartbreaking text at the beginning of her trip in South East Asia. Juliana Marins, 26, slipped and plunged nearly 1,000 feet down while climbing Mount Rinjani, in Lombok, on a guided hike on June 21. The publicist and pole dancer, from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, vanished after falling into the crater - and her body was found after a four-day search effort. Local police said Juliana had stopped to rest due to fatigue while the guide continued with the rest of the group. However, by the time he returned she was dead. It has now emerged that at the start of her doomed trip, Juliana had texted her mum, Estela Marins, to say that she was "fearless" and was determined to follow her dreams. In a message shown to Brazilian programme Fantastico, Juliana said: "Mami, I love you so much. I was heartbroken when we said goodbye. "In fact, that's the only thing that worries me: letting you, papi or my sister be disappointed. Other than that, I'm not afraid of much, much less trouble." She also said she wasn't afraid of life's difficulties as she was raised by a strong woman. "I was raised by a woman who can solve any problem and who is not afraid to take the plunge and go after her dreams," Juliana texted. "I am like that too. I have different desires and dreams. Her sister, Mariana Marins, said: "Juliana was in this group, but she got very tired and asked to stop for a while. They kept going, and the guide didn't stay with her." Brazil's Foreign Ministry called her death a tragedy and said that the country's embassy in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, had co-ordinated the rescue with local authorities. Authorities did not say when exactly she died. In an Instagram post, Juliana's family thanked the many Brazilians who had prayed for their daughter's safety. She was a dancer who lived in Niteroi, outside Rio de Janeiro and had been travelling across Asia since February. She had visited the Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand before reaching Indonesia.

Noma is coming to LA—and yes, it's a very big deal
The restaurant that redefined 'fine dining' by fermenting ants and serving moss is packing its knives and flying into L.A. René Redzepi's legendary Noma, the three-Michelin-starred Copenhagen icon once crowned World's Best Restaurant five times over, is coming to town for a months-long pop-up in 2026. The official teaser dropped today with a moody montage of citrus, mushrooms and the Hollywood sign, promising 'Noma LA 2026' and inviting fans to sign up for reservations. Cue mass hysteria. While details are still under wraps (price tag TBD but likely sky-high), we know this won't be your average tasting menu. Noma residencies are less 'imported restaurant' and more full-blown cultural immersion. Redzepi's team—which includes foragers, fermentation wizards and globe-trotting chefs—has previously decamped to Kyoto, Tulum, Brooklyn and Sydney. L.A. has been on his radar for years. Now, it's official. 'We've been working on America for a while,' Redzepi told the Los Angeles Times, noting that he fell for the city after a laid-back stint in Manhattan Beach with his family. Farmers markets, taco crawls with Roy Choi, Thai feasts with the Night + Market crew—it all sealed the deal. 'There's a creative energy I find in Los Angeles that is based on this grassroots experience, not on money,' he said. 'It's actually more rare than you think in food these days.' Dreams, as Redzepi commented on Instagram, really do come true.
