'Era Of Buffering Ended With Congress': Scindia Fires Data Salvo To Counter Kharge On Digital India
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge criticised the Narendra Modi-led government on 'Digital India', saying it led to "lofty claims and unfulfilled promises"
Union telecom minister Jyotiraditya Scindia launched a scathing attack against the Congress after party president Mallikarjun Kharge criticised the Narendra Modi-led government on its 10-year flagship initiative of 'Digital India'.
Kharge, in a lengthy post on X, alleged that the central government's 'lofty claims of Digital India is marred by" unfulfilled promises and false claims, digital exclusion of the marginalised, as well as weakened privacy and transparency.
Responding to this, Scindia took a swipe at Kharge saying 'Bharat's era of buffering ended with the Congress". 'Bharat's era of 'buffering' ended with the Congress. Under the Prime Minister, the nation shifted to 5G," he said in a post on X.
The fine print of Modi Govt's lofty claims of 'Digital India' is marred by —1⃣Unfulfilled Promises & False Claims ????As of 26th June 2025, under the BharatNet project, a total of 6.55 lakh villages were supposed to be targeted for broadband connectivity. 'Thank you, Mr Kharge, for yet another opportunity to enlighten you. Each time you have questioned us in the past, we have responded with results. For years, while your party offered dial-up promises, we built and delivered a world class telecom network, UPI, Aadhaar, and BharatNet, on the ground, and at scale," he added.
Scindia unleashed a string of data, ranging from BSNL's consecutive profit after 18 years to connecting over two lakh gram panchayats with broadband, on social media platform X to counter Kharge's claims.
He suggested to the Congress president to go check on the web for telecom scams in India, which will show activities related to the UPA regime while the present regime is recognised with leadership in technology.
'Mr. @Kharge , let me offer a simple suggestion: try a basic web search for 'telecom scams in India." What you'll find is a list featuring Congress/UPA-led crony capitalism at its best!" he said.
He further said at present when the world looks at India as a global leader in telecom, 5G, and satellite connectivity, it is the Modi government that made it possible, not by doing favours, but by doing reforms and 'undoing the mess of the Grand Old Party".
'The Congress' contribution to Digital India has been very clear which is to Scam India and leaving behind a legacy steeped in kleptocracy and institutionalised corruption," he added.
WHAT DID KHARGE SAY?
Kharge had alleged that false claims have been made by the Centre citing several instances, including coverage of villages aimed at under the Bharatnet project, abysmal performance of BSNL despite a financial package of over Rs 3 lakh crore, rise in cyber crimes, weakening of RTI by Data Protection Law in works.
He alleged that as of June 26, 2025, under the BharatNet project, a total of 6.55 lakh villages were supposed to be targeted for broadband connectivity but 4.53 lakh villages, about 65 per cent, are yet to be covered.
'The project's deadline has been revised at least 8 times in 11 years," Kharge said in his post on X.
He said when the private players are opting for 5G, BSNL has not yet completed its target of deploying 1 lakh 4G towers. 'Even after receiving three revival packages worth over Rs 3 lakh crore — Rs 69,000 crore in 2019, Rs 1.64 lakh crore in 2022, and Rs 89,047 crore in 2023, it still lags behind private players," he added.
He also said BSNL's debt rose by 291.7 per cent from Rs 5,948 crore in March 2014 to Rs 23,297 crore in March 2024 and MTNL's debt increased by 136.2 per cent, from Rs 14,210 crore to Rs 33,568 crore over the same period. He had alleged that 'RTI Act brought by the Congress party is being weakened by bringing a flawed Data Protection Law".

Govt Intervenes in Onion Row; Calls for Direct Market Purchase from Farmers
Nagpur: Amid rising discontent among onion growers over declining prices and irregular procurement practices, Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule intervened to address the crisis. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The senior BJP leader held urgent discussions with Union ministers Pralhad Joshi and Piyush Goyal after former MLA and Prahar Janshakti Party leader Bacchu Kadu initiated a hunger strike in Amravati, demanding a Rs24 base price and the elimination of middlemen control. Following the protest, Bawankule convened a high-level meeting at Vidhan Bhavan this week, attended by ministers Jaykumar Rawal (Marketing), Manikrao Kokate (Agriculture), and senior officials from various departments. The discussions focused on overhauling the procurement system to ensure farmers receive fair compensation for their produce. "The primary objective is to prevent farmers from distress-selling. We are working on a mechanism in consultation with the Centre to ensure transparent, efficient procurement directly from the producers," Bawankule stated, emphasizing that onion farmers must not depend on commission agents. Marketing minister Rawal argued that the current system had been dominated by a few vested interests operating intermediary procurement centres. "Procurement and exports are unrelated. The system must be corrected. Farmers must get the benefit, not middlemen," he asserted, proposing the closure of all non-transparent procurement centres. Agriculture minister Kokate supported this view, stating, "All govt procurement should be routed through APMCs. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now It's the only way to guarantee traceability, fair pricing, and systematic procurement." Bacchu Kadu, who ended his fast following the state's assurance, reiterated that central agencies like the National Cooperative Consumers' Federation (NCCF) and NAFED should buy onions directly from markets or farmers, not from agents. "A base price of Rs24 per kg should be fixed immediately. Onion procurement from outside the APMC system must stop," he demanded. In the last procurement cycle, delays and poor storage conditions caused significant spoilage, with thousands of tonnes of onions rotting in godowns. Farmer groups have warned of a repeat if corrective steps are not implemented immediately.

Voters to startups: the ordeals of identity in india
Every few years, the managers of India's operating system find ways to reinvent the debate on an old problem. A decade and a half after the inception of Aadhaar—and the global celebration of its contribution to India's digital public infrastructure—the old chestnut of identity has surfaced yet again. The Election Commission of India, on June 24, issued instructions for holding a 'special intensive revision' of the electoral rolls in Bihar. The objective: ensure eligible voters are included and no ineligible voter is on the rolls. There can be no quarrel with the objective of transparency, but the process has triggered a bunch of conspiracy theories and is the subject of rhetoric by the opposition parties. The revision of rolls—the first since 2003—requires voters not listed on the rolls to provide proof of their place of birth and a declaration of citizenship. Of the 7.9 crore voters in Bihar, over 4.9 crore need only an extract of the 2003 listing. Those not on the rolls, though, must present documents—if born before 1 July 1987 for themselves; if born between 1987 and 2004, for themselves and one parent; and those born after December 2004, for themselves and for both parents. Among the documents allowed for verification of citizenship are: identity card/ pension payment order issued to government/ PSU employee, identity card issued by government, banks, post office and LIC, educational certificate issued by recognised entities, permanent residence certificate, forest right certificate, caste certificate, land/ house allotment, family register, national register, passport and birth certificate. Size and scale matter for processes. Bihar, with a population of over 13.1 crore, would rank as the 11th largest country alongside Mexico. As per the Bihar State Caste Survey, a mere 15 percent have finished class 10 and only 6 percent are graduates. The National Family Health Survey 5 reveals two contrasting profiles of literacy for Bihar and Kerala. Bihar has the lowest literacy of 55 percent among women and 76 percent among men. The Economic Survey of Bihar states that just 6.7 percent of workers are employed with the government or PSUs.

Others too need alliance in UP, not just Cong: Raj Babbar
Not just the Congress but others too need an alliance in Uttar Pradesh to win the election, said former Uttar Pradesh Congress president Raj Babbar on Saturday. Former Uttar Pradesh Congress president Raj Babbar (HT File Photo) 'The alliance isn't just Congress's responsibility but others too have to be in it equally,' said Babbar. Raj Babbar came to preside over the oath-taking ceremony of newly appointed district and city unit office-bearers of the Lucknow Congress. Babbar was UP Congress president in July 2016 and was replaced by Aj Kumar Lallu in October 2019 after he resigned. 'They should be in it (alliance) if they want to defeat the opponent you are contesting elections against, and you want to be the power to defeat them,' he said without taking the name of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). 'The alliance will be made on ground according to the situation (in the future) and not on the basis of the past,' he said. 'At present we are focused upon organisational strengthening (sangathan srijan) and the process is being done in the most transparent manner,' he said, adding, 'There are no faces that you can say belong to a particular group. The entire process is under a coordination committee and the aim is to unite with like-minded people who are loyal with the party and connect with old associates also in a strong manner. Sangathan Srijan will enhance credibility among workers and encourage accountability.' Commenting upon the political implications of the caste census Babbar said that it is going to change the scenario. 'Naturally. You may do anything or not but people, once they know their status via census, will raise demands. Here, the lines by Lohia are most relevant: Jiski Jitni Hissedari Uski Utni Bhagidari (share on the basis of population). 'The caste census is certainly going to change the upcoming political scenario in the state as we will get a clear picture of the Hissedari, the demand for Bhagidari will also become clear. It will impact the elections,' said Babbar. Asked about the state government's move demanding shopkeepers on the Kanwar route to display name and identity, Babbar said, 'Why is this being demanded during the Kanwar Yatra. If necessary, it should be for all times. Kanwar Yatra has been taking place for years and all respect it.' Responding to the recent language row in Maharashtra, Babbar said, 'It is the government's job to handle such issues with maturity, not provoke the people.'
