Brooks Koepka withdraws from LIV Golf event after tee-box meltdown
Golf superstar Brooks Koepka unravelled at the LIV Golf Dallas tournament on Friday (Saturday AEST).
The former world No. 1 stormed out of the first round after smashing a tee box marker in visible frustration and then withdrawing due to illness, the New York Post reports.
The five-time major champion opened the day poorly, carding triple bogeys on the fifth and seventh holes at Maridoe Golf Club and sitting at six-over par through the front nine.
And that seemingly angered him.
His boiling point came on the ninth hole after an errant drive where Koepka angrily slammed his club into the ground.
He then struck the tee box marker and it flew toward the crowd, although it appeared that no one was hurt.
Koepka was playing alongside Aussie Cam Smith, who is seen walking off the tee as the American blows his top.
Following that outburst, Koepka continued to struggle, bogeying the 10th and 13th holes.
He ultimately withdrew from the tournament during the 14th hole, citing an apparent illness.
LIV Golf announced that Luis Carrera would replace him in the Smash GC team, and noted that while Koepka's individual score would not count, he could still return to contribute late this weekend if he chooses to.
Prior to switching to LIV, the Florida native enjoyed a golden run on the PGA Tour.
He reached No. 1 in the world rankings as he claimed the US Open in 2017 and 2018 plus the PGA Championship in 2018 and 2019.
He added another PGA title in 2023, but Koepka recently acknowledged the past few months had been difficult.
He missed cuts at both the Masters and PGA Championship and has now gone nine consecutive majors without a top-10 finish.
'From the first weekend in April until about [the beginning of June], you didn't want to be around me,' Koepka said earlier this month.
'It drove me nuts. It ate at me. I haven't been happy. It's been very irritating.'
As LIV Golf Dallas moves into the weekend, some eyes will be fixed on whether Koepka will return to the course following the incident and his withdrawal.
Koepka, who turned 35 in May, reached three years competing on the LIV Golf circuit this month.

Boxing Jake Paul hangs up on Piers Morgan in heated interview
Don't miss out on the headlines from Boxing/MMA. Followed categories will be added to My News. Jake Paul dramatically cut short his interview with Piers Morgan after the host questioned his boxing career. The former YouTube star, who will enter the ring with Mexican Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. this weekend in Anaheim, California, was a guest on Piers Morgan Uncensored on Thursday to promote the fight when the discussion became heated. UFC 317 Topuria vs Oliveira | SUN 29 JUN 12PM AEST | One of the biggest fight cards of the year has arrived. Spain's Ilia Topuria looks to capture the vacant lightweight title against former champion, Charles Oliveira | Order Now with Main Event on Kayo Sports. 'He's a dumba** and so it's going to be apparent on Saturday when he's the one that gets knocked out. I'm being so honest, man, this guy is easy work,' Paul told Morgan of Chavez Jr via video link. 'People don't realise, I'm a real killer. I really f***ing do this sh*t. 'YouTube, this YouTube, Disney that.' This sh*t is not a joke. The interview went off to a bad start with Piers Morgan calling Jake Paul's headwear 'blatant cultural appropriation'. 'I'm knocking out the best of the best, beating all of these people time and time again. 'And it's about time, that you old heads and all these f***ing boxers who think they know about the sport, put some respect on my name.' Among the boxers Paul defeated via unanimous decision was former champion Mike Tyson, who was 58 when they fought last year in Texas. The fight was streamed on Netflix at the time and a whopping 65 million people tuned in. 'I think you're a great YouTuber, a great influencer. I admire what you try to do in boxing,' Morgan said. 'But I do think when you actually come up against a proper, serious boxer, and I suspect that Julio César Chévez Jr may be that person, it could all come crashing down.' When the British journalist added that Paul, 28, would never have defeated 58-year-old Tyson when he was in his prime, saying 'you wouldn't have lasted 10 seconds', the young boxer got defensive. 'You don't actually know that! You can't sit there and say that. I think anything is possible,' Paul hit back. 'That's why self-belief is the most powerful thing in the world. You don't think I can be a Mike Tyson? I don't think you go to the gym!' Following some back-and-forth insults, Paul hung up on Morgan, who found the entire segment hilarious. Despite Morgan insisting he had been to the gym twice that week, Paul continued his rant, saying: 'You're still a fat a**. 'I think the problem here, Piers, is that you think that your opinion matters,' he said. 'I'm just taking your audience to sell pay per views. I don't give a f**k about your show, dumb a**. 'This is a f**king business enterprise. Buy the pay per view on Saturday, June 28, me versus Julio César Chávez Jr. Thank you, tune in everybody!' And with that, he was out, leaving Morgan to laugh about what just transpired. 'Cheers Jake, really enjoyed that, and good luck to Julio – knock him out for all of us will you?' Man City crush Juventus, Real Madrid reach Club World Cup last 16
Pep Guardiola's Manchester City demonstrated their Club World Cup credentials with a 5-2 victory over Juventus on Thursday while Vinicius Junior starred as Real Madrid beat Salzburg 3-0 to secure a spot in the last 16. Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia beat Pachuca of Mexico 2-0 to pip Salzburg to the last berth in the knockout phase, as Al Ain battled to a 2-1 win over Wydad Casablanca in the day's other game. City became the only side at the tournament to win all three of their group matches as they put Juventus to the sword in front of 54,320 at the Camping World Stadium in Orlando. City now face Al Hilal, the only Asian representative in the next round after goals from Salem Al-Dawsari and Brazilian Marcos Leonardo against Pachuca. "We played well and I'm happy with the victory," said City winger Jeremy Doku, who opened the scoring. Doku pounced for the early opener after new arrival Rayan Ait-Nouri set him up with a clever ball. However City stopper Ederson passed the ball straight to Teun Koopmeiners who levelled for Juventus, in one of the few moments in which Guardiola's team let their focus slip. Pierre Kalulu bundled into his own net from Matheus Nunes' cross to restore City's lead. The Premier League side, hoping to make up for a poor season by their standards in which they finished without a major trophy, stepped up a level after the break with Erling Haaland's introduction. The Norwegian striker tapped home the third and then helped create the fourth for Phil Foden, before Savinho smashed home from distance for the fifth. Dusan Vlahovic netted late on for Juve but it did not take the shine off an impressive triumph for City, who were able to give holding midfielder Rodri a first start after his long injury lay-off. "Manchester City have a lot better (quality of) players than us, that's the truth, that needs to be acknowledged," said Juventus coach Igor Tudor as his side finished second in Group G. "The stars didn't align for us to play better tonight." Al Ain got the better of Wydad in Washington, DC in a meeting of two teams who were already eliminated but were hoping to sign off with a victory. South African striker Cassius Mailula blasted the Moroccans into an early lead but Togo international Kodjo Fo-Doh Laba levelled from the spot just before the break for Al Ain. That was their first goal of the tournament after 5-0 and 6-0 thrashings by Juve and City respectively, and Paraguayan international Alejandro Romero curled home from the edge of the box to earn the team from the United Arab Emirates victory. - Vinicius stars in Madrid win - Vinicius scored one goal and made another with a touch of class as Madrid saw off Salzburg in Philadelphia to clinch top spot in Group H. Real play Juventus in the last 16 in Miami on Tuesday. The Brazil star Vinicius opened the scoring after a superb defence-splitting pass by Jude Bellingham on 40 minutes, to the delight of the vast majority of the 64,811 crowd on a rainy night at Lincoln Financial Field. Vinicius then set up Federico Valverde with a clever backheel to make it 2-0 in first-half stoppage time. Young striker Gonzalo Garcia ran through to wrap up the win late on with his second goal of the tournament, as Xabi Alonso's team end the first round of FIFA's new tournament unbeaten. "I am pleased with the boys, and now the interesting phase begins," Alonso told broadcaster DAZN. Real were once again without top scorer Kylian Mbappe, who has yet to play at the tournament as he recovers from illness. "We thought Kylian would make it and it wasn't to be. Now we have four days and I want to be optimistic but cautious at the same time," Alonso said.
