Naxals are fighting for rights of the marginalised, says Thirumavalavan

The Hindu18 hours ago
Challenging Union Home Minister Amit Shah's repeated declarations of eradicating Naxalism, VCK leader Thol. Thirumavalavan on Sunday described Naxalites as 'comrades' and 'sons of the soil', who resist corporate exploitation and fight for the rights of marginalised communities.
On the fourth death anniversary of Father Stan Swamy, a statue in his honour was unveiled at the St. Peter's Higher Secondary School in his native village of Viragalur. The event was organised by the Stan Swamy People's Federation in collaboration with residents of the Viragalur panchayat.
'Dalits should be clear that Naxalites are not enemies of the nation. They are people who have taken up arms in defence of forest land, mineral wealth, and the rights of the Adivasis and Dalits. Naxals live in extreme hardship, not for personal gain, but to resist the looting of natural wealth by corporates,' Mr. Thirumavalavan said.
Mr. Thirumavalavan also said: 'We may differ in methods with Naxals on their approach towards electoral politics, but our goals are aligned. What is wrong with having contact with them? How can such relationships be deemed anti-national or anti-people?' However, Stan Swamy was not associated with the Naxal movement, he maintained.
School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, addressing the gathering, urged everyone to uphold the legacy of Stan Swamy.
DMK MP Kanimozhi described the current struggle for human rights as 'another freedom movement', drawing parallels between historical revolutionaries and modern-day activists.
Saying that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin's consistent opposition towards the Union government must be supported, she said: 'This is not just electoral opposition; it is a fight for future generations. The legacy we must leave behind is not just land or wealth—but freedom, rights, and dignity.' Criticising the Centre, she alleged that it functioned 'not for the people, but for corporates'.
'Any voice raised against corporate exploitation is silenced—through intimidation, false cases, or even murder. Anyone who questions the BJP is branded anti-national or an urban Naxal. If that is the label for speaking truth, we can wear it with pride.'
Leaders from various political parties, including CPI State President R. Mutharasan, CPI(M) leader P. Shanmugham, Kolathur Mani of the Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam, Lalgudi MLA Soundarapandian, and MLA Inigo Iruthayaraj, along with human rights activist Henry Tiphagne, also addressed the gathering.

Siddaramaiah has already been given a message to quit State politics, says Joshi

I think the Congress appointed Siddaramaiah to its national OBC cell to make him to quit the Chief Minister's post, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi said in Hubballi on Sunday. 'It is not clear why the Chief Minister has been appointed to the national-level team. I think it is a message asking him to quit State-level politics and go to Delhi. However, I do not think he will succeed in his new role. A leader who is unable to handle political affairs at the State-level will not be able to achieve anything significant at the national level,' Mr. Joshi told reporters. 'On the other hand, Deputy Chief Minister and KPCC president D.K. Shivakumar has been going around saying that he will be the next Chief Minister. But then, he seems to have changed his mind recently. He is making philosophical statements of renouncing political power,' Mr. Joshi said. Mr. Joshi criticised Mr. Siddaramaiah's statement about a connection between COVID-19 vaccine and heart attacks in young people, as unscientific. 'It is an irresponsible statement. It is an insult to the country. Over 150 nations are using COVID-19 vaccines. The whole world has praised the vaccine-makers of India. People in responsible positions should not make such statement,' Mr. Joshi said. 'The Chief Minister has taken the vaccine. Was it Indian or foreign? Is he criticising the vaccine just because it was promoted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi? Mr. Siddaramaiah should tender a public apology for his anti-vaccine statement,' Mr. Joshi said. 'The Congress leaders have made such irresponsible and insulting statement in the past too. They insulted the country during the war with Pakistan,' he said. He said that Congress legislators, including Basavaraj Rayaraddi, are saying that there is no money for development as all the funds are spent on guarantees. 'Yesterday, Shiggaon MLA Nasir Khan Pathan also made a similar statement during a public programme. I was present there. It is unfortunate that the Congress government is not doing any development work,' Mr. Joshi said.

Chirag Paswan says he will contest Bihar polls, backs demand for domicile policy in govt jobs

Asserting that he was contesting the upcoming assembly elections in Bihar, Union minister Chirag Paswan on Sunday voiced his support for the introduction of domicile policy in government jobs in the state. Paswan, who heads the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), made the announcement while addressing a rally in Saran district that borders his Hajipur Lok Sabha constituency. "People have been asking me whether Chirag Paswan will contest the assembly elections. I want to announce from Saran that yes, Chirag Paswan will contest the elections for the sake of a better future of Bihar," he said, evoking thunderous applause. "I will contest the election for the people of Bihar, for my brothers, mothers, for my sisters. We will build a system in Bihar that will truly take the state forward on the path of development. I will realise the dreams of my father and work for 'Bihar first, Bihari first'. I will live and die for Bihar and its people," he added. Paswan also supported the demand for introducing a domicile policy for government jobs in the state, becoming the only NDA leader to do so. Live Events Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav has promised implementation of "100 per cent domicile" if the Mahagathbandhan, helmed by his RJD, came to power in the state after the elections. "For the sake of the youth of Bihar, I am in support of the introduction of a domicile policy in government jobs. This has been a long-standing demand of job seekers," Paswan said. "I must inform you that the domicile policy was introduced in 2006, but it was withdrawn by the opposition parties when they came to power. The RJD and Congress never think about the betterment of the youth of the state. They always mislead people. If they come to power, they will snatch over half of your wealth via inheritance tax," he claimed. The Nitish Kumar government has already ruled out the possibility of the introduction of a domicile policy, stating that any such move would be against the Constitution. Attacking the RJD, Paswan alleged that the people talking about Bihar's development now are the ones who had ruined the state in the '90s. PTI

No place to sit for Ashwini Choubey at Bihar BJP meet & the Chandigarh dinner that's sending ripples

Choubey, the former Union minister who was left out of Modi 3.0, left many party colleagues stunned last May when, on the first death anniversary of the late Sushil Modi, he said the former deputy CM 'died early due to ill-treatment by a senior party leader'. Senior BJP leader and former Buxar MP Ashwini Kumar Choubey is going through tough times. At the party's state working committee meeting in Patna last week, he walked up to the stage but left after he did not find a place to sit, it is learnt. The meeting, convened to chalk out a strategy for the Bihar polls, was opened by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Akhilesh & Jayant no longer friends? On 1 July, Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav received birthday wishes from leaders across party lines, including Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, Apna Dal (Soneylal) chief Anupriya Patel, and Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) president O.P. Rajbhar. However, conspicuously absent from the list of names was Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief Jayant Chaudhary, once a close friend of Akhilesh. The two fell out after Jayant, who was elected to the Rajya Sabha, walked out of INDIA bloc and joined hands with the BJP, for which he was rewarded with a berth in PM Modi's Council of Ministers. Akhilesh, SP insiders say, feels betrayed by Jayant. The two have even stopped communicating with each other these past few months. The unease also extended to SP ally Pallavi Patel of Apna Dal (Kamerawadi) who wished Akhilesh a happy birthday, but did not receive a response on 'X'. In contrast, her sister and Union Minister Anupriya Patel, despite being an NDA ally, received an official 'thank you' from the SP handle. Dinner party sets off speculation A dinner hosted by Union Minister Rao Inderjit Singh at his daughter Arti Rao's official residence in Chandigarh recently has set political circles abuzz in Haryana. The gathering was attended by 12 MLAs, including 11 from the BJP and one from the Congress. They were mostly from the Ahirwal region. The Congress MLA was Manju Chaudhary from Nangal Chaudhry, who defeated former minister Abhe Singh Yadav, a close aide of former chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar, in the 2024 Assembly elections. Chaudhary had publicly claimed Rao's support during her campaign, as she did in 2019, adding intrigue to her presence. As the news of the dinner became public, some of these MLAs, including Sunil Sangwan, Mukesh Sharma, Krishan Kumar and Om Prakash Yadav, promptly paid a visit to CM Nayab Singh Saini's residence in Chandigarh. Rao later said his daughter had been allotted an official residence in Chandigarh and he invited people close to him for a dinner to mark the occasion. Rao, whose chief ministerial ambitions remains unfulfilled to this day, has been frequently taking jibes at Khattar, who is now a Union minister, and his successor Saini.
