Taiping housewife loses over RM140,000 to scam
Taiping police chief ACP Mohamad Nasir Ismail said the 46-year-old victim lodged a police report on July 9 after realising she had been duped by the syndicate.
"Initial investigations revealed that the victim was contacted via the Telegram app by several individuals who offered her online jobs.
"She was tasked with following several accounts on e-commerce platforms Shopee and Lazada to boost their profile visibility, and was promised payments of RM5 to RM8 per task, depending on the views and ratings,' he said in a statement.
Mohamad Nasir said that although the victim received payment notifications after completing each task, the funds could not be accessed or withdrawn,
"The victim was later told she had allegedly committed an error on a task and was required to make payments to recover her Shopee and Lazada accounts,' he said.
He said the victim subsequently made 22 transactions to 12 different accounts as instructed by the suspect, but her accounts were never returned.
"After the last transaction, the victim was again asked to make another deposit, but nothing materialised and the truth finally dawned on the victim that she had been scammed,' he said.
He said the case was being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. - Bernama

Man found dead in ravine classified as murder
IPOH: Police confirmed that the man who was found dead in a ravine in Kampung Batu 23, Jalan Pahang near Tapah on Saturday died of injuries from being beaten by a blunt object. Campers mourn tapir mascot killed near MARDI Cherating Agrotech Park
KUANTAN: A male tapir, known as a natural mascot for campers at MARDI Cherating Agrotechnology Park, died after being hit by a vehicle along Jalan Kuantan-Kemaman. The incident occurred around 12.10 am when the animal was crossing the road and collided with a Perodua Alza. Acting Kuantan police chief Supt Mohd Adli Mat Daud confirmed the driver, a 41-year-old man, was unharmed. Authorities quickly secured the scene to manage traffic on the dimly lit road. The tapir's carcass, weighing over 120 kg, was handed to the Pahang Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan). Badrol Hisham Mohamad, a local resident, was among the first to arrive and helped alert authorities. He noted that several motorists stopped to assist in directing traffic due to the carcass blocking the road. MARDI Cherating Agrotechnology Park expressed grief over the loss in a Facebook post, calling the tapir a cherished attraction for visitors. Police tracking Kelantan drug syndicate members after RM5mil seizure
KOTA BARU: Kelantan police believe the drug syndicate they recently crippled, involving the seizure of 35.4kg of drugs worth over RM5 million, has links to international drug networks. State police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat, however, said investigations into the case are still ongoing. Yusoff also gave his assurance that the police would continue to track down the remaining members of the syndicate. "We believe several members of the group are still operating within the state, particularly in districts bordering a neighbouring country. "We will hunt down everyone involved, regardless of who they are. "If they are connected to drugs, we will not spare them," he told reporters here today. He added that efforts are underway to identify those still at large, including individuals suspected of abetting or protecting the syndicate's operations. Last week, police crippled a major drug syndicate distributing methamphetamine pills with the seizure of more than 35.4kg of the drug worth RM5.04 million in six raids in Pasir Mas and Tumpat.
