Giants want young gun to stay amid Victorian interest
A sore Aleer is likely to make way for Sam Taylor in this week's Sydney derby as speculation grows around the young defender's playing future.
Off-contract at season's end, Aleer has been heavily linked with a move to St Kilda.
The 23-year-old has struggled to crack into a stacked Giants defence - boasting the likes of Lachie Whitfield, Lachie Ash and Jack Buckley - since being drafted with pick No.15 in 2021.
He has only played 20 games so far.
An injury to Taylor opened the door for Aleer to return to the side in round 11, and he has held onto his spot since.
But with Taylor passed fit for Friday night and Aleer managing soreness, coach Kingsley admits the fourth-year Giant is unlikely to retain his spot.
Aleer will be one of three changes, with star duo Josh Kelly and Jesse Hogan also available after being rested last week.
"Leek didn't do much today (at training). He was a bit sore, so we'll assess that again with our medicos," Kingsley said on Wednesday.
"He probably looks unlikely to play at this stage, I would think.
"It's going to be a really difficult decision, and a difficult match committee that we're going to have.
"Some unlucky guys are going to miss out."
As contract negotiations continue, Kingsley could only praise the young star's attitude amid growing interest.
"His decision will be his decision," Kingsley said.
"We hope he stays. We know there's a lot of interest in him, and he's going to be a really good player, we know that.
"He's handling it extremely well. I haven't noticed a change in behaviour at all.
"He's head down, bum up, getting to work, making sure he prepares really well and then performing well.
"Maybe in private time, it's different, but certainly when he presents at the club, that's what I see."

Greene suspended for Heeney incident but escapes penalty for fat-shaming rival star
Toby Greene will miss GWS' crucial clash with the Western Bulldogs after copping a one-match ban for striking star Sydney midfielder Isaac Heeney to the head on Friday night. The fiery Giants skipper dropped to his knees and thrust his left forearm into his business partner's head after the star Swan was gang tackled during the first quarter of the Sydney derby at Engie Stadium. Match review officer Michael Christian ruled the contact was high and intentional, but low impact. The Giants have until Monday to decide whether to contest the charge. 'That's stepping slightly over the line,' Australian Football Hall of Fame Legend Leigh Matthews told 3AW on Saturday of Greene's actions. Loading Heeney did not appear affected by the clash and played out the match. It was not the only controversial moment involving Greene during the Giants' come-from-behind 44-point victory. He called Sydney forward Tom Papley 'overweight' during a Fox Footy interview as the GWS skipper walked off the ground at half-time. The provocative Papley had charged at Greene and chested him front-on after kicking a goal late in the second term, propelling the Swans to a 28-point lead at the long break.

AFL 2025: TGWS Giants captain Toby Greene cops ban for ugly strike on Sydney rival Isaac Heeney
Giants captain Toby Greene is facing a week on the sidelines following a strike on Sydney rival Isaac Heeney. As reported first by Herald Sun chief football writer Jay Clark, Greene was hit with a one-match suspension by the Match Review Officer, with the act judged as intentional conduct, high contact and low impact. The Giants have the option to chellenge the MRO's verdict at the tribunal. You can watch the incident in the player at the top of the page. The suspension comes ahead of a crucial finals-shaping Thursday night fixture for the Giants against the Western Bulldogs. With the Giants and Bulldogs both winning on Friday night, eight premiership points still separates the clubs, with the Dogs in a must-win position ahead of the clash at Marvel Stadium in Round 21. Toby Greene to face ban for hit on Isaac Heeney. Brisbane Lions legend Jonathan Brown put Greene's 'undisciplined' act down to being 'too amped up' to start the match. 'Yeah, it is late. So, you can understand some sort of fine,' he said on Fox Footy on Friday night. 'He was just a bit fired up, he was a bit hot under the collar — maybe a bit amped up too much in the first half, and that just showed out in some of the undisciplined nature of the acts in the first half.' Fellow Lions great Alastair Lynch added: 'I think that's where Adam Kingsley's coming from — he didn't make the right impact in that first half and (needed) a bit of a reset. I don't think the Isaac Heeney one's a good look.' Originally published as GWS Giants captain Toby Greene cops ban for ugly strike on Sydney rival Isaac Heeney

St Kilda hope booming star can cause more nightmares
Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera is "booming" but St Kilda coach Ross Lyon says the star alone can't lift the Saints to the promised land. Wanganeen-Milera has quickly built a reputation as one of the AFL's best rebounding defenders. But the 22-year-old showed what a weapon he could be in the midfield last week with 36 disposals, 10 clearances and two goals in a 31-point loss to Geelong. Lyon indicated Wanganeen-Milera will again be deployed in the midfield for Sunday's clash with Melbourne at Marvel Stadium. St Kilda face a fight to retain the out-of-contract speedster, who is set to field massive offers from rival clubs. But even if the Saints do hold onto him, Lyon knows there's still plenty of work to do to get them into premiership mode. "Naz is booming. Obviously he's an exciting player, but it's a weakest link game, not a strongest link," Lyon said. "We're not basketball, when one player can dominate and take you to a championship. "We need an even spread of contribution." A few weeks ago, Hawthorn tried several taggers on Wanganeen-Milera, with little success. It even led Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell to joke that he would be having nightmares about the star Saint. "Even when he was on the bench I was worried about him by the end," Mitchell joked. Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin says he will contemplate sending a tagger to Wanganeen-Milera this Sunday. "Clearly teams have had some success in tagging him but he still plays to a pretty high level," Goodwin said. "Last week you saw Geelong just back their system in and got a pretty positive result as well. "He's an incredible player. We'll be prepared for both but we probably won't give the Saints too much of a heads up about what we're going to do." Both St Kilda (5-13) and Melbourne (6-12) are well and truly out of the finals race. The Saints have recalled Zak Jones, Lance Collard and Arie Schoenmaker, with Lyon making the big call to drop Liam Henry. Max Heath also goes out of the side, with Darcy Wilson ruled out due to concussion. The Demons welcome back Tom Sparrow and Harrison Petty from concussion, while Charlie Spargo and Blake Howes also return. Steven May, who will contest his three-match ban at the AFL Appeals board next week, is out with concussion, while the axe fell on Koltyn Tholstrup, Harry Sharp and Matthew Jefferson.
