As Debate Over Bangladesh Election Intensifies, A Tussle Over Dates

Bangladesh's Election Commission (EC) has declared that it's ready to hold the fresh parliamentary election in the country, but confusion persists on the timing. Nationwide polls are due in the South Asian nation after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted last year following a nationwide protest.
The elections are expected to take place before the first half of April 2026, but so far, no formal discussion has taken place between the government and the EC regarding the timing of the polls, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin said on Sunday, according to a report by Bangladesh daily Prothom Alo.
BNP's Request
Meanwhile, Bangladesh's interim leader Muhammad Yunus met with the leader of the nation's key Opposition party--the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) -- in London last Friday. During the meeting, BNP's Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman reportedly proposed to hold the national election before Ramadan 2026 as opposed to the Yunus Government's proposal for April next year.
BNP is expected to be the frontrunner in the elections, and the party has earlier demanded that the polls should be held by December 2025.

"The Chief Advisor reiterated his plan to hold the election in the first half of April 2026 and added that, subject to necessary reforms and progress in justice, it could be held even a week before Ramadan. BNP welcomes this position," the BNP said in a post on social media platform X.
In 2026, Ramadan is expected to start from the evening of Tuesday, February 17, till Wednesday, March 18. However, these are the tentative dates, and their confirmation depends on sighting of the new moon, specifically the crescent moon, at the start of the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Every year, the dates for Ramadan move 10-11 days earlier because it is a lunar calendar.
Election Commission's Plan
When asked about BNP's demands, the Chief Election Commissioner told Bangladeshi media that he only heard about the demands of holding elections in February/March via the media and did not have any further information. He hinted that if the government wants, the Election Commission would announce elections earlier than April.
He said that for now, the Election Commission is focusing solely on preparations to ensure that whenever the election takes place and is ready to deliver.
Government's Criticism
Critics of Muhammad Yunus have accused him of delaying elections to stay in power longer than envisaged when the interim government was sworn in. But the Yunus-led government has maintained that elections without reform will not make sense, and the government needs time to implement reforms before holding elections.
According to electoral law in Bangladesh, election dates are announced officially through a gazette notification issued by the government, and the law does not allow such announcements six to eight months in advance. However, political observers say the announcement by the elected government is a formal practice, but informally, dates are known way before elections are announced. Voters' lists in Bangladesh are being revised and are expected to be ready by February/March next year.
Meanwhile, Hasina's party-- the Bangladesh Awami League--which was ousted in August last year, said, "Yunus sounds clearly like he is lying about having 'the most beautiful election ever.' (Not possible when he illegally banned the largest party and unlawfully put over 100 MPs in jail)."
"A discussion with Tarique Rahman revealed that there was a scheme to stage an orchestrated and rigged election, excluding 50 per cent of voters from the electoral process," Hasina's party added.

Following the assault, local residents reportedly apprehended and severely beat Fazor Ali, who then fled after being taken to hospital instead of handed over to the police. Some reports cited social media users suggesting that Bangladesh police action was delayed until public outrage surged after the video's circulation. Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed, son and advisor to ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, expressed outrage over the incident on social media. He blamed the interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus for a rise in mob violence, terrorism, and sexual assaults in the past 11 months. Since the fall of Sheikh Hasina's Awami League government last August, Bangladesh has witnessed increasing violence targeting minority communities. Hasina fled to India following a violent street movement, with Yunus assuming control of the interim government shortly thereafter.

'Backdoor NRC' Push? Why 2.93 Crore Bihar Voters Must Prove Citizenship To Cast Their Ballot
The EC kicked off a special, intensive revision of the voter list in Bihar this week. According to an announcement on Saturday, of the total 7.89 crore voters in the state, around 4.96 crore—those who were already registered as of January 1, 2003—only need to fill out and submit the new enumeration form. However, the remaining 2.93 crore voters, which is about 37 per cent of the total, will also need to provide documents proving their Indian citizenship along with the form. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar told news agency PTI on Sunday that the purpose is to ensure that no eligible citizen is left out of the electoral rolls while no ineligible person is part of it. The 37 per cent population will have to provide one of the 11 listed documents to establish their place or date of birth. EC, however, clarified that it does not mean they need to furnish the place/date of birth of their parents if their parents are named in the 2003 voters' list. WHY THE NEED NOW? There is a difference between a usual revision of the electoral roll where one can add delete or edit names and EC's special intensive revision. Intensive revisions were carried out in 1952-56, 1957, 1961, 1965, 1966, 1983-84, 1987-89, 1992, 1993, 1995, 2002, 2003 and 2004, the poll body has revealed—a fact that may put the Congress in a spot. The last intensive revision for Bihar was conducted by the commission in the year 2003. This time, the EC has its reasons for repeating the practice. 'Various reasons such as rapid urbanisation, frequent migration, young citizens becoming eligible to vote, non-reporting of deaths and inclusion of the names of foreign illegal immigrants have necessitated the conduct of an intensive revision so as to ensure integrity and preparation of error-free electoral rolls," the poll body reasoned on June 24 when it announced its plans for Bihar. WHAT WILL PROVE YOUR CITIZENSHIP? In addition to the enumeration form, electors added to the role after 2003 will have to prove their citizenship in Bihar in this assembly election. Those born in India before July 1, 1987, will have to submit any document from the specified list. But those born in India between July 1, 1987, and December 2, 2004, will have to submit an additional document establishing one parent's date and place of birth. Those born in India after December 2, 2004, will have to submit documents establishing the date and place of birth of both parents. Passports, birth certificates, and SC/ST certificates are some of the valid documents that will do the job among many others. POLITICS & GHOST OF NRC The EC has made it clear that the move will not be limited to Bihar and will be rolled out across the country. KTR slams Shah over inaction against corruption allegations on T'gana govt
KTR also took strong exception to what he described as an orchestrated campaign to defame the Kaleshwaram Project, which played a pivotal role in making Telangana the top rice-producing state ANI Bharath Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Working President K.T. Rama Rao has launched a scathing attack on Union Home Minister Amit Shah, demanding to know why the BJP-led Centre has failed to order an investigation into the corruption allegations against the Congress government in Telangana, a release from BRS PRO said. Reminding Shah of his remarks made earlier in Nizamabad, where he called the Revanth Reddy-led government an "ATM" for the Congress high command, KTR questioned, "Why hasn't the Union Home Minister acted upon it? What is stopping the Centre from initiating a probe through the CBI or ED?" Alleging a covert understanding between the BJP and Congress, KTR said, "In Delhi, they stage a mock fight. In Telangana, they strike secret deals. Is BJP shielding Revanth Reddy because it cannot take on BRS alone?" KTR reminded that even Prime Minister Narendra Modi had once accused the Congress of running a "RR Tax" scam in Telangana, but no investigation was initiated. "If you only make allegations during visits, but allow Congress to loot in broad daylight, what message are you sending to the people?" he asked. The BRS leader also took strong exception to what he described as an orchestrated campaign to defame the Kaleshwaram Project, which played a pivotal role in making Telangana the top rice-producing state in the country. "Unfortunately, a landmark irrigation initiative like Kaleshwaram is being targeted purely for political gain," he said. On the BJP's developmental record in the state, KTR noted, "Despite eight BJP MPs and two Union Ministers from Telangana, not a single project has been given national status. No IIT, IIM, or central medical institute has been granted. This discrimination hasn't gone unnoticed." KTR also ridiculed the Centre's repeated "launches" of the Turmeric Board, pointing out that Union Minister Piyush Goyal had already virtually inaugurated it earlier this year. "Now Amit Shah is cutting ribbons for the same office set up in a building constructed by former CM KCR. Not a single rupee was allocated in the budget. Even a permanent building hasn't been sanctioned," he said. The BRS leader further accused the BJP of betraying Telangana through multiple acts: scrapping the Bayyaram Steel Plant, meant to employ tribal youth. Cancelling Hyderabad's ITIR project, which would have been a game-changer and pushing forward Andhra Pradesh's Banakacharla project, while curbing Telangana farmers' water rights. Privatising the operations of Kazipet Coach Factory, thereby dashing youth employment hopes in Warangal, he further alleged. "Since coming to power at the Centre, BJP has treated Telangana with hostility. The people have rejected them before and will continue to do so", KTR said in his statement.
